 Hi,
I'm  a  newbie  and  have  read  lots  of  posts  &  articles  in  IAH  on  Nitrogen  cycle  &  ammonia  toxicity.I  have  indeed  been  several  times  victim  of  ammonia  poisoning  in  beginning  by  introducing  loads  of  fishes  into  new  tanks.
However,  I  can  see  in  almost  all  LFS  in  Bangalore  that  fishes  are  stocked  in  huge  numbers  in  bare  bottom  tanks  with  just  a  air  stone  running.I  have  always  been  curious  to  know  how  does  this  setup  work  in  favor  of  LFS  guys  with  most  of  them  ignorant  of  nitrogen  cycles. Also  I  have  seen  that  few  fishes  remain  unsold  for  at  least  a  week's  time  in  same  tanks  till  the  new  stocks  arrive  which  he  again  dumps  into  same  tank.

Is  there  some  magic  in  LFS?  Surprised

From  what  I  have  seen  they  do  a  lot  of  water  changes  and  thereby  diluting  the  toxicity  of  ammonia,  second  normally  fish  do  not  remain  in  their  tanks  for  long.
If  you  want  to  see  dead  fish  in  their  tanks,  go  to  the  shop  in  morning  before  shop  opens,  that  way  you  will  see  the  ture  number  of  dead  fishes  in  the  tank.  I  have  used  this  on  a  number  of  ocassions  to  judge  a  LFS.

And  of  course,  you  can  see  lot  of  fish  dieing  in  their  tanks.....  and  you  pay  for  the  dead  fish  too.....  distributed  pricing.........   Chuckle

I  really  doubt  if  they  ever  feed  the  fish  -  atleast  here  in  Tirupur.  Probably  the  oscars  and  flowerhorns  may  get  feed  (dead  or  dying  goldfish,  that  is).  The  rest  of  the  fish  might  not  remain  with  them  for  too  long.

Normally  they  get  weekly  deliveries,  so  I  guess  anything  with  them  gets  sold  by  the  weekend  !!!!

There  are  good  shops  and  there  are  bad!  Do  not  generalize  all  shops  based  on  1  or  2  experiences.  I  have  seen  and  experienced  a  LOT  of  good  shops  in  mumbai.
Conscientious  shop  owners  do  stock  fish  according  to  their  requirements,  they  also  adopt  excellent  husbandary  practices,  with  weekly  water  changes  and  regular  feedings,  respect  for  the  nitrogen  cycle  and  yes,  no  distributed  pricing!
I  think  Nauzer  will  surely  back  me  here?
 Regards,
 amod.

Thanks  to  all  who  educated  me  on  this.Indeed,  I  agree  that  there  a  **few**  LFS  which  have  dedicated  aquarist  instead  of  mere  "Fish  Sales  Person!!  Chuckle

I  wish  I  had  that  kind  of  a  turnover!  Seriously,  I  dont  sell  fish  for  atleast  a  week  from  the  time  of  arrival   Smile   do  you  mean  to  say  that  I  starve  them  during  the  week?   Smile

Why  do  you  want  my  backing?  I  guess  you  have  done  enough  justice   Very Happy
So  Guys,  just  as  there  are  good  and  bad  LFS  -  there  are  good  and  bad  hobbyists  and  the  no.  of  bad  hobbyists  exceeds  the  no.  of  bad  LFS,  now  you  will  again  say  that  it  is  because  of  the  wrong  information  spread  by  the  LFS  that  is  responsible  for  making  a  bad  hobbyist..........I  would  have  agreed  to  this  some  years  back  when  information  was  limited  today  there  is  no  such  constraint  thanks  to  sites  like  IAH  that  generate  free  information  amongst  hobbyists.
Now,  how  do  you  define  a  bad  hobbyist?  From  my  experience  I  can  tell  you  that  I  talk  to  a  new  customer  not  once  but,  thrice  I  guide  him  I  waste  my  time,  efforts  and  energy  in  religiously  explaining  each  small  detail  and  refuse  to  sell  him  an  oscar  for  a  live  bearer  tank  -  I  make  him  understand  each  single  detail.........as  to  why  he  cannot  do  that.  -  he  comes  to  me  in  a  couple  of  days  to  ask  for  medication  because  his  fish  are  dyeing...I  dont  understand  why  than  he  suddenly  re-calls  that  the  fish  I  refused  to  sell  him  -  he  bought  it  from  another  LFS.
Let  me  know  what  I  should  do  in  such  a  situation?
option  #1  -  swear  at  the  customer  (which  I  cannot!)
option  #2  -  sell  him  another  oscar  (which  my  morals  will  restrict  me  to!)
option  #3  -  throw  him  out  of  the  shop  (which  will  ensure  that  I  loose  a  customer  for  life!)
option  #4  -  start  to  over  sell  him  stuff  that  he  does  not  need.  (though  my  principles  will  never  agree  to  it!)
Very Happy  now  the  ball  is  in  your  court   Very Happy

I  always  wondered  what  happens  what  would  happen  if  cross  a  real  aquarist  with  a  LFS  owner.

 Now  I  know.  <grin>

Deepesh  neither  my  Dad  nor  my  Mom  have  had  anything  to  do  with  fish  except  eating  them...so,  I'm  a  pure  breed  third  generation  LFS  owner  who  graduated  from  the  hobby!   Very Happy
 Sandeep,
I  answered  my  question  above  but,  do  you  know  what  you  get  when  you  cross  a  financial  consultant  with  an  aquarist?
Then  end  product  starts  a  thread  on  'Aquarium  budgets'   ROFL
