Caked  Microsol  -  B  has  only  absorbed  some  moisture,  in  case  of  lab  grade  chemicals  it  makes  a  difference  as  the  molecular  weight  (weight  of  water  absorbed  will  add  on  to  the  molecular  weight)  will  change  for  very  serious  analysis  work.

For  our  needs  it  simply  does  not  matter.  We  add  a  heaped  tablespoon,  the  heap  may  be  smaller  or  larger  depending  on  the  person,  size  of  his  spoon,  etc.,  etc,  and  even  with  EI  we  shoot  for  1  to  2  ppm  Fe,  that's  a  large  large  margin  of  error,  plants  don't  actually  need  1  ppm  Fe  in  the  water  they  get  by  with  less.  Anyway  try  to  store  the  powder  form  in  an  air  tight  container,  that  should  be  enough.

Cu  is  not  a  factor,  I  have  dosed  the  same  PMDD  to  my  shrimp  only  tank  and  they  continued  breeding  as  if  nothing  happenned.  There  is  no  need  for  worry.

Get  Microsol  -  B  make  PMDD  grow  plants  enjoy  the  view.

Don't  add  anything  with  ammoniacal  Nitrogen  to  the  tank,  there  will  be  algae  at  once.  Urea  too  will  give  you  ammonia.

 thanks  madan
not  much  worried  about  the  chemicals  since  they  come  in  tight  containers  as  i  have  shown  in  the  pictures.  with  MICROSOL  B  planning  to  transfer  them  to  dark  coloured  ,  air  tight  containers.

Hi  Madan

I  seem  to  recall  there  were  questions  related  to  the  relatively  high  concentration  of  copper  in  Microsol  B.  Is  that  significant?  Especially  if  one  is  keeping  shrimps  or  snails  in  the  planted  tank?

 deepesh

 Deepesh,
My  older  planted  tank  had  snails  and  i  used  to  dose  Microsol  B  as  per  Madans  mails  and  Chuck  Gadd's  recommendations.  But  some  how  the  snails  were  Njoying  there  until  Gluetaraldehyde  eradicated  them  a  few  months  back.

I  do  not  have  the  gutts  to  try  it  out  on  my  Shrimp  tank  hence  no  comments.

OK  I  think  I  got  misguided  a  little  readig  all  these  threads.  I  had  purchased  Fe-EDTA  also  now  shall  I  add  to  my  PMDD  or  not.

I  haven't  added  any  laterite  below  the  substrate  it  is  just  shiveled  river  sand  from  a  construction  site.  And  I  had  washed  it  so  many  times  before  making  the  tank  so  natural  laterite  would  be  left.

So  how  can  I  add  my  Fe-EDTA  sperately  during  WC  aling  with  K.

 Another  question  what  is  EI?

 Hi  Karna,
If  you  are  adding  Microsol-B  in  your  PMDD,  your  Fe-EDTA  won't  be  required.  In  case  your  plants  start  showing  iron-deficiency  symptoms,  in  that  case  you  can  add  it  up  to  the  PMDD..  More  iron  in  the  water  column  can  result  in  algae.

If  you  have  started  the  tank  just  recently,  I  would  ask  you  to  redo  it  and  put  laterite  beneath  the  sand.  It  takes  care  of  many  things  which  can  go  wrong  in  a  regular  dosing  cycle.

EI  is  estimative  index  dosing.  Do  a  google  search  on  that  or  Tom  Barr  and  you  will  get  the  info.

Remove  the  sand  from  the  construction  site,  add  laterite  to  the  bottom  layer  and  redo  your  tank.
Plain  river  or  construction  gravel  is  simply  bits  and  pieces  of  silica,  and  has  zero  CEC.
Laterite  increases  the  CEC  of  the  substrate.

I  am  using   Multiplex  by  Karnataka  Agro  Chemicals  in  my  Discuss  Tank  for  the  last  eight  months.  It  is  available  in  Nursary  Shops  in  Mumbai.  It  is  in  liquid  form  so  there  is  no  hassle  of  any  mixing.  Information  is  available  on  this  site-  http://www.multiplexgroup.com/MNLFGeneralLiquid.htm

For  Macro  nutrients  I  am  using  Bahar  by  Ratanshi  Agro  Industries.  This  is  also  a  liquid  fertilisers  and  contains  NPK.

My  Tank  is  48x14x24  with  only  one  Phillips  Truelight  (36Watt).  Plant  growth  is  satisfactory.  I  have  Amazob  Sword,  Banana,  Kokumba  and  other  plants.  (Do  not  know  their  names).

Those  who  do  not  get  Microsol  B  can  try  these  fertilisers.

 Hi  all,
Its  next  to  impossible  to  get  MICROSOL-B  in  Trivandrum  but  there  is  Neoplex  available  and  its  nutrient  content  on  percentage  basis  are
 Zinc  -2.50
 Copper  -  0.10
 Iron  -2.00
 Molybdenum-  0.01
 Manganise  -1.00
 Magnesium-  4.00
 Boron  -0.10
It  comes  in  100  ML  bottle.
Wondering  of  this  could  be  used  to  dose  and  how  much.
 Thanks  and  Cheers
 Vince

Zinc  percentage  is  higher.  Tyr  some  other  formulation  where  Fe  content  is  higher.   Zinc  can  bind  to  the  fish  gills  and  create  problem  in  respiration

The  Funda  of  PMDD  is  to  get  Iron  into  acceptable  values  in  your  aquarium  water  and  the  rest  of  the  micronutrients  fall  into  place.  This  was  done  by  Dupla,  Tropica  and  the  original  PMDD  makers  Sears-Conlin.  The  reserve  of  Iron  was  the  only  micronutrient  tested  as  this  was  the  cheapest  test  kit  available  ($35).

Microsol-B  is  chosen  in  India  because  Microsol-B  comes  closest  in  composition  to  the  above  mixtures  and  has  not  caused  any  problems  for  fish  and  plants  for  the  past  6-7  years  that  it  is  being  used  by  hobbyists  countrywide.

As  long  as  the  Fe  content  of  any  micro  nutrient  mixture  is  about  the  same  as  Microsol-B,  and  the  rest  of  the  micronutrients  are  close  enough  to  the  composition  in  Microsol-B  go  ahead  and  use  it  as  per  dosage  prescribed  for  Microsol-B.

In  your  case  Iron  content  is  1/3  that  in  Microsol-B  and  some  of  the  other  components  are  in  multiples  of  that  in  Microsol-B.  Trying  to  bring  about  an  Iron  reserve  with  this  will  mean  dosing  3  times  the  recommended  dose  of  Microsol-B,  this  will  cause  an  excess  of  other  micros.  It  may  be  bad,  it  may  be  ok,  you'll  have  to  test  for  yourself.

 Madan

How  much  iron  you  would  like  to  maintain  in  water  column  ?  I  try  to  maintain  0.05  ppm  Iron  with  each  dosing.  I  do  not  use  Microsol  B,  but  prepare  the  Trace  Mixture  from  reagents.  Fortunately,  I  have  access  to  digital  balance.

The  dosing  you  have  recommended  at  the  start  of  this  thread  is  1  ml   of  prepared  solution  of  Microsol  B,  for  each  280  liters   every  day.

Is  it  not  too  low   considering  only  5%  iron  in  Microsol  B  powder  mix?

 Please  get  us  your  opinion.

 Regards
 Rana
