 Hi  everyone,
I  lost  nearly  all  my  fish  about  a  month  ago  and  I've  only  just  recovered  enough  from  the  shock  to  come  back  to  talking  about  fish. The  saddest  part  was  that  it  was  due  to  ignorance  and  entirely  preventable  and  this  is  what  makes  it  harder  to  bear.
I  was  getting  the  house  done  up  for  my  younger  daughters  wedding  and  as  I've  had  the  house  painted  many  times  since  I  started  keeping  fish  I  didn't  expect  anything  to  happen.  The  first  day  I  came  home  in  the  evening  to  find  all  the  fish  in  one  tank  either  dead  or  dying,  the  fish  in  the  tank  next  to  it  were  fine.I  quickly  transferred  the  sick  fish  to  another  tank  but  they  all  died  later  on.I  thought  that  some  child  must  have  dropped  something  into  the  water  and  that's  what  killed  them.  A  few  days  later  I  came  home  at  lunch  time  and  find  nearly  all  my  fish  dead  or  dying  I  changed  the  water  etc  but  only  a  few  survived.  This  is  when  I  realised  that  it  must  have  been  the  varnish  that  they  were  using  on  the  doors  and  windows  that  was  the  culprit,  even  though  it  was  not  being  used  on  or  near  the  tanks.  So  now  I'm  left  with  very  few  fish  and  all  my  tanks  look  bare.  My  guppies,  barbs,  rainbowfish,  most  of  my  angelfish,  kribs  and  gouramis  were  not  affected  at  all  so  it  seems  that  only  certain  species  can't  tolerate  it

That's  just  terrible  Elaine,  I  am  very  sorry  to  hear  about  that.  I  guess  we  should  all  be  careful  as  to  the  type  of  paint  we  use.  I  have  been  using  a  type  they  call  no  V.O.C.  It  hardly  has  any  smell  to  it.

I  hope  you  start  to  restock  your  tanks  soon.  Let  us  know  about  your  progress.

 Sorry  for  your  loss,  Elaine.

I  keep  worrying  about  this  whenever  I  have  pest  control  come  to  the  house.
I  generally  cover  the  tanks  with  bedsheets  if  they  are  in  the  sprayed  area,  but  don't  even  let  the  pest  control  guys  in  the  fish  room.

 Hi  Elaine

That  is  quite  a  shocker.  Sorry  for  your  loss.

Most  of  us  hardly  realize  the  chemicals  that  we  use  in  our  day  to  day  living.

 Sorry  for  your  loss,  Elaine...

Can  you  let  us  know  which  species  were  affected?  Discus?

I  would  have  assumed  that  Labyrinths  like  gouramis  would  definitely  have  been  affected  if  varnish  fumes  were  the  cause.

 Regards,
 Venkat

 Sorry  to  hear  that.

Elaine,  can  you  please  confirm  if  you  were  using  aerators  on  any  of  these  Aquariums.

You’ll  soon  overcome  the  trauma  seeing  the  new  live  stock,  so  get  started  soon  Thumb Up

As  a  precaution  â€“  Aerators  should  be  turned  off  where  you  have  activities  like  pest  control,  Spray  painting,  Chemical  (most  are  alcohol  based)  treatment  for  furniture  being  carried  out,  just  covering  the  Aquarium  won’t  help.  Aerator  will  certainly  accelerate  the  issue.  This  includes  sponge  filter  &  power  heads  with  open  air  suction  valve.

Few  of  these  can  damage  the  internals  of  equipment  â€“  Metal  (corrosion)  or  Rubber  (disintegration)

 Sorry  to  hear  that..

When  I  got  the  room  painted..   i  had  covered  all  my  tanks  with  tarpaulin  and  had  specifically  instructed  the  painters  no  to  keep  the  chemicals/paint  there..

Most  of  my  high  fin  pepper  cory  died  and  some  sterbais  too  but  discus  all  were  ok  except  a  couple  of  juvis.

Sorry  for  your  loss.  Air  pumps  should  be  turned  off  or  they  pump  in  the  deadly  fumes/polluted  air  into  the  water.

I'd  like  to  thankyou  all  for  your  understanding  ,  for  most  people  it's  just  a  few  fish  and  they  can't  understand  why  I  should  be  upset.  I  lost  my  breeding  colony  of  duboisi  (8  adults  and  4  juveniles),  4  discus  of  which  one  pair  had  laid  eggs  for  the  first  time  recently,1  flowerhorn,2  firemouths, more  than  20  jewel  cichlids,  some  malawis,  swordtails, mollies  and  some  others  Sad
Yes  I  did  have  all  the  filters  and  aerators  running  at  the  time  which  now  I  know  I  should  have  put  off.I  have  had  my  house  painted  many  times  without  any  casuality,  this  time  I  have  had  plywood  put  on  the  doors  and  so  they  were  varnished  and  not  painted  and  I  think  that's  what  killed  them
I  can't  get  fish  like  cichlids  etc  until  I  go  away  somewhere  as  the  lfs  do  not  keep  them  here

Feel  sorry  for  the  loss.  The  heat  wave  for  the  past  3  days  killed  all  my  Julies.  :  (  The  other  survivors  have  been  hospitalized  in  cool  cement  tanks.  :  )
