Hello all,
I am originally from Chennai and currently live in US. I am planning to setup a fresh water tank at my home in Chennai. I need some guidance in setting up an aquarium.
I have 18 months old marine setup here at my home in US, so I have some experience in aquariums. What I want to know is how to go about in Chennai. Here are some of my questions to begin with.
1. I will be in Chennai in June for two weeks. What are some good shops in Chennai to shop for tanks. Can I get some information online? I am looking for atleast 55 gallons corner tank. I would like to get quote before coming there, so I can plan ahead.
2. I am thinking of setting up a Fresh water community tank. What kind of fish can I keep successfully in Chennai.
3. I will be setting up the system myself and my brother will be taking care of it. So I would like to setup a completely maitenance free setup. Any tips and suggestions to that end will be appreciated.
4. What kind of things that I can get from US to kick start my system?
I appreciate your help.
Thanks All,
Arvind. |

Hi Aravind,
Welcome to IAH.
Item 2 in the list - Freshwater community tank - What fish would you like to keep? Cichlids, Livebearers, goldfish etc? - Just curious.
You'll get a better response to all your questions on the morrow - weekends are sluggish on IAH.
Enjoy! |

I recently had a tank made up by one of the LFS guy from Anna Nagar.
4 feet in length, 2 feet in height, 1.5 feet in depth.
It totally costed me 8000 with hood, stand and undergravel filter with 20 kgs of polished gravel.
It would be still cheaper if you step out to buy the glass.
The guy's name is srini and his number is 9840927144. You can call me if you need any help.
Let me know your location and i can suggest few shops for you to visit. |

Hi Prem,
Thanks for the heads up. I will have my brother call the LFS guy.
Also, the type of tank I have in mind is a corner aquarium. Something like this:
http://www.aquariumsource.com/skin1/images/details_cabinetry_4.jpg
Ideal size would be 30X30X24.
Can these guys make bowfront aquarium that are made to order? I will check with him anyways, but I want to know how reliable these tanks that are made according to own own specifications. Also I want the tanks to be drilled in the bottom so I can hook up a canister filter in the cabinet.
Do let me know some good shops to visit around West Mambalam area if you know any.
Thanks for your help. |

Hi Arvind,
Welcome to IAH.
The picture has given by you is a Moulded Corner Tank & I am sure none of any LFS guy in chennai can make it. They can make Triangular Shape Aquarium. |

welcome to IAH. Why dont you speak to golden aquarium in chennai - his numbers are in the LFS section. he gave me a good deal.
I would reccomend a FW tank, there are a lot of Marine enthusiasts in Madras but i think the summer heat gives them a tough time. If you do need any more help do feel free to contact me.
There was a thread started by sandeep raghuvanshi on aquarium budgets search for it in the archives. it will be usefull. |

Imported ready made bow front tanks are available @ your place, but no LFS guy can make it over your place. You have to go for ready made corner tank & the size will not be more than 4' |

moulded tanks are incredibly expensive since most of them are imported. i came across a 10 gallon rectangular tank with the edges on the front rounded and it was about five times that of a plain ten gallon tank! and the bigger you go the more expensive you get!
btw, am i wrong or are you one of a rare breed who got into the hobby by keeping marine fish as opposed to fw? as somebody already mentioned, chennai wouldnt be a good place for keeping marine fish. it just gets far too hot, even for some freshwater fish. |
