 Carbon!!

Hellow,  I've  got  myself  a  C1600  Dolphin  external  Filter.  It  says  Its  supposed  to  do  1100  L/H,  but  I've  measured  and  it  does  not  give  me  anything  more  than  500  L/H.

Anyway,  I  was  wondering  if  someone  could  tell  me  how  often  I  would  have  to  change  my  carbon.  The  Actual  Pond  size  is  about  2000L.

 Really  can't  afford  an  Eheim.

On  a  different  note,  I've  also  got  a  5000  L/H  Dymax  pump(Actual  is  around  2800  L/H).  Would  this  thing  blow  the  Edit  out  of  my  C1600  if  I  used  it  to  drive  the  filter  ?

By  now  you  would  have  realised  that  I'm  completely  new  this.  Any  kind  of  comments/suggestions  are  welcome.

 Thank  You!!
 -Trent

 Trent....

IN  first  place,  Why  are  you  using  Carbon?????

On  the  filter  output  i  have  not  tried  Dolphins...  But  with  Eheim  i  have  seen  that  the  filter  works  as  specified.  Check  if  you  have  blockages...  Also  check  the  filter  media.  If  it  has  too  much  of  murk  and  is  blocking  then  obviously  the  filter  output  would  go  down.

 Is  this  a  external  pond.
In  a  water  body  of  this  size  ,  carbon  will  be  of  no  use.  Carbon  is  used  to  absorb  impurities  and  becomes  useless  after  some  time.
If  you  give  some  more  information  about  your  set  up,  a  more  specific  advice  can  be  given.

 Hey  Raghu,

Thanks  you  for  the  update.  Well  the  Carbon,  came  along  with  the  unit.  It  came  along  with  Ceramic  Rings,  Black  Charcoal-ey  Stuff,  which  I'm  guessing  is  Activated  Carbon,  server  kinds  of  Sponge.  And  I  had  an  extra  tray  In  which  I've  placed  gravel  of  size  of  about  4mm  thick.

I  had   checked  the  flow  as  soon  as  I  set  up  the  filter  with  the  Pond.  Thats  when  I  got  the  500  L/h  reading.  I've  also  got  a  pre-filter  in  place  at  the  intake.  The  filter  seems  to  be  really  helping.  The  fish  seem  to  be  real  happy  too.  But  I  wanted  to  get  a  lil  more  flow  in  there,  and  I  wanted  the  Pond  to  be  turned  atleast  once  in  a  hour.  Thats  why  I  wanna  try  out   the  dymax  pump.

Right  now  the  external  filter  is  set  up  as  shown  below:

 Top  (Outlet)
 |
 |-Tray1  -  Sponge  (Fine)
 |-Tray2  -  Sponge  (Coarse)
 |-Tray3  -  Gravel
 |-Tray4  -  Activated  Carbon
 |-Tray5  -  Ceramic  Rings
 Bottom  (Inlet)

I'm  so  tempted  to  hook  it  to  the  filter   Rock On!!  But  I'm  just  a  lil  worried  about  the  excess  pressure  it  would  create  in  the  canister.

 Thanks
 -Trent

 Hey  Sandeep,

 How  are  you  ?

Well  its  a  pond  out  in  the  garden.

 Pond  Statistics
 -----------------
-Its  usually  maintained  about  1800  -  2200  Litres.
-Total  area  of  about  35  sq  ft
-Average  depth  of  about  1.5  -  2  feet.
-Two  thirds  of  the  area  is  heavily  planted
 -Average  fish  length  about  2.5"
-Got  About  80  in  total  (Botias,  Carps,  Barbs,  Tetras,Sharks  and  a  few  Chilids  Its  a  community  pond)

I've  got  a  Dolphin  C-1600  external  Filter  and  a  Dymax  PF-5000  pump.  As  of  now,  I've  only  hooked  up  the  Dolphin.

Like  I  was  saying,  I  really  wanna  try  to  drive  the  filter  with  the  pump.   Very Happy

 Thanks
 -Trent
