PostPosted: Wed May 23, 2007 2:23 pm Post subject: Breeding Bettas Reply with quote

Have  bred  Bettas  and  thought  it  would  help  others  to  do  so  with  the  help  of  the  following.
Clicked  a  few  shots  of  Betta's  mating  behaviour.  Also,  took  the  text  from  my  previous  post  to  make  it  algorithmic  Wink

 1.  Have  an  open  container  with  water,  let  the  mosquitoes  lay  some  eggs  and  have  the  larvae  wriggle.  Though  the  bettas  can  be  fed  heavily  on  protein  stuff,  I  prefer  mosquitoe  larvae  as  they  act  as  a  natural  trigger  and  are  easily  available

 2.  Keep  conditioning  the  male  and  female,  feed  heavily  and  perform  frequent  WCs  (You  could  use  the  almond  leaf  to  condition  the  water  too)

 3.  Introduce  the  female  to  the  container  to  gorge  herself  on  the  wrigglers.

 4.  Take  25%  of  the  water  from  an  aged  tank  to  the  10  gallon  and  fill  the  rest  with  fresh  water  (conditioned  of  course)

 5.  Let  the  female  in  the  10  gallon  for  about  2-3  hours  and  cover  one  part  of  the  tank  with  some  cover  so  that  it's  shady  and  air  does  not  blow  over  it.  (Preferably  start  at  8-9  AM  so  that  you  have  the  whole  day  to  observe  them)

 6.  Get  a  glass  chimney  (the  kind  they  use  to  cover  oil  lamps)  and  cage  the  female  within  that.

 7.  Now  that  the  female  is  out  of  reach  for  the  male,  introduce  the  male  to  the  tank

 8.  The  male  and  female  will  start  flaring  at  each  other.  And  mostly  she  will  show  horizontal  stripes  (showing  stress)
You  will  also  notice  her  getting  visibly  fatter.

 9.  The  male  will  use  the  section  below  the  shaded  portion  and  start  building  a  bubble  nest.

 10.  The  female  should  start  showing  vertical  bars  and  begin  to  "plump  up"

 11.  The  female  will  start  Standing  on  her  head  (body  will  be  slightly  inclined  )

 12.  At  this  point,  lift  the  chimney  and  make  the  female  available

 13.  Let  them  be  by  themselves  for  about  8  hours

 14.  The  male  will  wrap  himself  around  the  female  in  an  "Embrace".  This  causes  the  female  to  release  the  eggs.
Here's  my  video  of  the  action  -  http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6562769124193556&hl=en

 15.  If  you  happen  to  miss  the  "action",  Check  the  bubble  nest  thru  the  glass  for  eggs  (they  will  be  sticking  to  the  bottom  of  the  bubbles)

 16.  If  the  eggs  are  present,  the  female  will  most  probably  be  hiding  in  a  corner  and  will  be  visibly  thinner.

 17.  Remove  the  female  without  disturbing  the  male  and  his  bubble  nest  (by  placing  a  divider  before  u  try  to  catch  her)

 18.  Leave  the  male  with  the  eggs  and  ensure  you  have  your  room  light  ON  always  till  the  eggs  hatch  in  about  30-36  hours.
Video  of  the  fry  swimming  horizontally  due  to  the  weight  of  the  yolk-sac  http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6444759346295744585

 19.  Be  sure  to  start  an  infusoria  culture  in  time  for  the  babies  to  start  feeding.
Infusoria  works  best  with  Betta  fry  as  they  are  extremely  tiny  Smile

From  now  on,  the  male  begins  his  3  day  long  vigil  with  the  eggs/babies,  during  which  there  should  be  some  source  of  light  available.

Once  the  fry  are  free-swimming,  remove  the  male  to  reduce  cannibalism.

All  the  best  raising  your  little  fiesty  packages  Thumb Up

 Cheers,

Definitely  a  very  well  written  step  by  step  procedure  to  get  your  own  tiny  bettas  Chuckle

Agree  with  Babu  to  either  put  it  up  as  an  article  or  make  it  a  sticky.

Again,  a  job  well  done  Hayath...

Thanks  for  the  write  up  Hayath.  This  comes  at  a  good  time  because  I  couldn't  resist  the  temptation  to  buy  myself  a  male  multi-coloured  crowntail.  I  haven't  had  one  since  I  was  a  child.  His  name  is  Sam.

Glad  it  helped  you  "AQAURIST"  Smile

Infusoria  is  very  important  now  for  the  fry  to  survive,  remove  the  male  once  the  babies  have  hatched.

 Charlie,
that's  a  very  lovely  colored  male  you  got  yourself.
