Metronidazole  is  available  in  the  commercial  name  Metrogyl  in  India.  Its  also  available  in  smaller  strengths  in  the  name  Flagyl.
 These  are  basically  tablets.

Metrogyl  is  also  available  as  a  suspension  in  syrup  form.  This  is  to  be  avoided,  as  it  has  coloring  agent,  and  sugar.  Sugar,  in  my  opinion,  can  cause  a  bacterial  bloom  in  your  tank.

There  is  yet  another  form  thats  called  Metragyl  IV,  thats  used  for  intra  venous  applcation.  In  the  common  mans  terms,  this  is  used  to  be  injected  into  your  bloodstream,  either  directly  with  an  injection,  or  mixed  with  your  regular  drips.  This  too,  does  not  apply  to  us.

In  these,  what  we  use  in  the  Metrogyl  tabs,  or  Flagyl  tabs,  depending  on  the  strength  needed.  This  should  be  available  at  your  medical  store.

The  main  thing  about  Metrogyl  is  that  it  works  well  at  temperatures  above  30  degrees  C.  I  use  it  after  I  set  my  heater  at  32,  and  it  works  well.

This  being  the  case,  its  ideal,  for  tropical  warm  Â water  fish,  and  not  really  ideal  to  be  used  with  coldwater  fishes.

For  goldfish,  I  would  recommend  Prazi.  This  works  well  even  at  lower  temperatures.  I  treat  my  goldfish  for  about  8  to  9  days,  with  Prazi,  changing  water  everyday,  and  replacing  the  lost  meds  at  pro  rata  basis.  At  the  end  of  the  treatment,  I  flush  out  their  guts  using  some  nice  laxative  like  epsom  salt[Mg2SO4],  green  peas  and/or  bananas.  My  goldfish  used  to  go  bananas  over  bananas.  And  during  the  last  2  days  of  gut  cleaning,  make  sure  you  keep  your  hospital  tank  clean  by  water  changes,  as  the  faeces  will  contain  dead  worms  and  eggs.  After  this  your  fish  should  be  super  clean,  and  healhty.

Paralelly,  I  would  suggest  you  disinfect  your  display  tank/cement  tank,  with  PP[KMnO4],  and  also  dry  it  out  for  about  2  to  3  days,  and  refill  with  fresh  conditioned  water,  and  then  return  the  fishes  to  the  tank.

This  will  really  have  a  big  difference  in  your  fishes.  They  will  not  only  start  looking  healthy  and  eat  well,  but  will  also  grow  so  fast.  Once  this  is  done,  all  you  need  to  do  is  preventive  mediation  once  in  6  months  ,  3  days  treatment.

This  is  what  I  follow,  and  have  been  succesfully  keep  some  clean  ryukins!

For  some  info  on  Prazi,  pls  read  :

 http://www.pondrx.com/products/16162.html

 Hope  that  helped!

 Thanks  for  the  info,  Nitin.
I  would  also  like  to  know  if  Prazi  is  available  in  India  and  where  you  generally  get  it.

As  for  Metrogyl,  I  have  it  but  have  not  had  the  chance  to  dose  it  yet.   Apparently  there  is  a  solubility  issue  with  one  of  the  forms  of  Metronidazole,  which  is  solved  by  dissolving  in  vodka  first.
Does  Metrogyl  dissolve  easily  in  water  or  do  we  go  the  Vodka  way?
(So  many  uses  for  Vodka  in  aquariums,  Smirnoff  can  find  a  whole  new  untapped  market  Smile)

I  do  have  Absolut  Raspberry,  ans  Smirnoff  Citrus  Twist,  but  still,  as  Metro  works  only  in  higher  temps,  I  would  save  the  vodka!  And  I  am  sure  vodka  mixes  better  with  soft  drinks  than  with  Metro!  I  am  sure  vodka  is  enough  to  deworm  me,  though  its  primarily  dependant  on  the  dosage!   Drinking

I  do  have  some  stock  of  Prazi  that  I  got  about  a  month  back.  I  got  a  lot  of  stuff  from  Singapore,  for  one  person,  and  these  are  surplus.  If  anyone's  interested,  let  me  know.  I  should  have  about  3  or  4  cans  left!

Metronidazole  and  Praziquantel  are  entirely  different  drugs  and  are  not  substitutes  for  each  other.

Metronidazole  is  for  protozoans,  Praziquantel  is  for  worms.  Metronidazole  is  freely  soluble  in  water  and  can  be  dosed  to  the  tank  itself;  Praziquantel  is  insoluble  in  cold  water  and  best  given  directly  in  the  feed.

 Regards

 Hi,

I  have  got  some  Praziquantel  600  mg  tablets  (no  other  constituents)  from  the  'Cash  Pharmacy'  in  Bangalore.
It  comes  under  the  name  of  'Distoside'.  There  are  2  other  manufacturers  of  pure  praziquantel  as  well  in  India  (do  not  remember  the  names).
You  can  ask  the  pharmacist  to  check  in  their  durg  books  for  this  drug  (Praziquantel)  and  they  can  identify  the  local  company  that  makes  it.

For  8  tabs  of  600  mg  each,  it  cost  me  Rs.  165/-

 regards,
 Bhargav  (Bangalore)

If  Distoside  is  really  praziquantel[no  offence  to  Bhargav],  I  think  its  really  good.  Check  if  it  works,  and  I  am  sure  I  too  will  buy  it.  PraziPro  is  what  I  have,  and  its  much  more  expensive.

White  stringy  faeces  indicate  that  fishes  have  to  be  dewormed.  Thats  how  I  understand  it.  I  treat  fishes  like  the  arowana,  discus,  angels,  frontosa  and  also  goldfish.  As  I  already  said,  there  is  a  huge  difference, and  you  too  know  for  sure  they  are  clean,  once  you  do  it.

And,  someone  asked  if  I  could  see  the  worms.  No,  is  my  answer.  I  think  you  would  need  to  use  a  microscope  for  that.  NOt  sure  though,  but  till  date  I  havent  seen  the  worms  dead  or  alive,  in  faecal  matter.

But  you  will  know   for  sure  the  difference,  once  you  treat  them,  with  the  difference  in  the  health  and  appetite  and  growth  rate  of  your  fish.

Guys,  I  know  this  is  Shishir's  thread.  I  am  sorry  if  this  sounded  like  an  advert  for  the  Prazi  that  I  have!!!

Hi  DJ  Rocky,  If  you  want  to  deworm(using  antihelminthics)  you  dont  want  metronidazole.  As  Deepesh  pointed  out  metro  is  useful  against  diseases  caused  by  protozoans  and  not  helminths  or  cestodes.  There  was  a  drug  discussed  once  in  these  forums  called  'Plozin'.  consisting  of  Prazi  50mg,  Pyrantel  palmoate  144  mg,  and  fenbendazole  500mg.  It  is  made  by  Qualicare  Pharmaceuticals  and  costs  Rs.240/=  for  12  tabs. If  you  enter  'plozin'  in  site  search  you  will  find  the  threads  where  it  was  discussed.

For  all  Veterinary  drugs  in  Bangalore  THE  place  to  look  for  is

Nathan's  Vet  Pharmacy  near  Russel  market.

Enter  the  area  from  Shivajinagar  bus  stand,  turn  left  at  the  church,  take  the  next  right  turn  in  front  of  beef  market  and  continue  straight.  You'll  see  Hotel  Taj  on  the  right,  continue  up  the  road  leading  at  10  o'clock  direction.  Nathan's  pharmacy  is  on  the  left.

One  is  for  humans,  the  adjacent  one  is  for  animals.
