I  have  Atman  AT-1100AF  filter  that  pumps  out  water  about  1000lt/hr,  My  question  is  how  long  does  a  normal  filter  last?  I  have  it  running  from  8  months.  Does  the  rate  of  water  flow  slows  down  as  the  time  passes?

It  should  work  as  long  as  any  other  normal  motor  would  last.  I  have  an  external  Atman  filter  and  sometimes  the  sand/pebbles  gets  stuck  and  it  stops  working.  I  usually  clean  the  pipes  and  the  impeller  once  in  a  while  to  clear  and  pebbles.  The  muck  in  the  pipe  can  slow  the  rate  of  flow.

All  filters  are  supposed  to  be  used  24x7.  When  you  ask  how  long  does  a  normal  filter  last,  do  you  mean  between  cleanings  or  the  life  of  a  filter?

Filters  will  need  to  be  cleaned  out  every  so  often,  depending  on  the  bio  load,  water  quality,  etc.  -  could  be  once  in  a  fortnight  or  once  in  6  months.
The  flow  rate  will  decrease  as  more  and  more  Edit  gets  trapped  in  the  media  making  it  harder  for  water  to  flow  through  it.
Make  it  a  point  to  clean  out  your  filters  regularly.

I  have  been  using  Atman  2000  l/hr  filter  for  past  7  months.  I  clean  the  sponges  once  a  month  during  water  changes  in  same  water  which  i  remove  from  the  tank.  I  noticed  that  the   flow  reduces  considerably  if  not  cleaned  regularly.

For  lucky  people  they  last  for  up  to  3  years  and  in  excess  when  it  comes  to  internal  filter.

On  external  filters  i  have  seen  them  not  being  replaced  since  they  have  purchased  it  at  the  start  of  their  hobby..  Of  course  there  are  filter  parts  which  have  been  replaced...

Note  that  i  am  talking  about  quality  goods  here  and  not  the  Hocus  Pocus  ones  in  the  market.

Yeah  thats  absolutely  true  the  quality  stuff  last  for  a  very  long  time.  I  Have  a  fluval  canister  filter  have  been  using  it  for  5  years  and  not  once  had  it  given  me  trouble  no  parts  change  nothing  and  it  handles  the  bio  perfectly,  its  supported  by  a  ugf  with  2  powerheads.I  clean  my  canister  once  in  3  months  and  i  use  this  for  my  piranha  tank  (5  beauutiful  big  fellows). So  i'd  say  the  life  depends  on  the  quality  of  filter  you  buy.and  yes  filteration  should  be  on  24x7.No  matter  what.sometimes  i  get  freaked  out  when  they  have  these  long  power  cuts  once  in  a  blue  moon.Even  thought  of  getting  an  inverter  just  for  the  tank  but  i  guess  that  would've  been  heights!!!  Chuckle  Â ROFL
