 Hi,

I  want  to  build  a  1'x1'x1'  tank  using  acrylic.  I  had  a  few  questions  regarding  this  :

 1.  Can  I  use  Cyano-Acrylate(Super-glue?)  to  stick  the  Acrylic?  I  know  the  bond  is  very  strong,  but  will  it  be  water  proof?
 2.  What  is  the  thickness  of  acrylic  sheets  required  for  a  tank  of  this  size?

Also  any  pointers  where  I  can  buy  the  Acrylic  sheets  in  Bangalore  will  be  helpful.

 Thanks,
 Rajesh

 Rajesh

Please  search  the  DIY  Forum  and  various  modules  on  IAH.  There  is  a  wonderful
 article  on  making  Acrylic  aquariums.

Buy  the  imported  Acrylic.  Use  chloroform  to  bond  the  acrylic!

 Hi  Madan,

I  have  gone  through  the  article  suggested  by  you,  but  the  sealant  used  is  chloroform,  but  not  cyano-acrylate.  Has  anybody  tried  this?

Also,I  would  like  to  know  how  easy  would  it  be  to  get  chloroform  in  Bangalore?

 Thanks

 Hello  Rajesh,

Cyanoacrylate  with  most  materials,  even  metal,  produces  fumes/vapors  that  leave  behind  a  translucent  coat  on  the  material.  It  will  spoil  the  finish  of  the  joint,  recommend  using  Chloroform.

You'll  get  with  the  same  guy  selling  Acrylic.  If  not  he  will  guide  you  to  the  nearest  point  where  you'll  get  it.

 Rajesh,
as  Deepak  said  Cyanoacrylate  leaves  a  white  film  along  the  sheet  and  its  very  difficult  to  remove  -  the  only  advantage  is  that  i  sticks  more  quicker  than  Chloroform...The  Bonding  of  Cyanoacr.,  is  also  not  very  strong  compared  to  that  of  chloroform.

I  use  chloroform  for  my  acrylic  stuff  and  in  chennai  i  usually  get  it  in  any  chemical  vendor.
