Its  around  6-7  inches  long.  The  lfs  guy  said  its  been  imported  from  Singapore  to  chennai  and  then  to  my  place-hyd  (donno  hw  true  that  is!!)  ...  Any  idea  what  strain  it  is??  Any  feeding  tips  for  a  bigger  hump  and  better  coloration?  What  could  be  its  age??  Thank  you.

The  flowerhorn  guys  could  probably  give  you  better  suggestions  but  in  general,  feed  market  prawns  or  market  fish  as  a  staple  food.  Try  not  to  feed  live  food  even  hough  your  LFS  guys  probably  told  you  to.
Commercial   foods  I've  heard  about  are   Hi-Red  for  colour  and  Ching  mix  (hard  to  get)  for  the  hump.  No  idea  about  the  age,  mate.

I  jus  bought  this  guy  ....  He  is  in  a  small  one  and  half  foot  tank  right  now  with  40%  water  change.   Im  goin  to  shift  it  in  to  a  30"X15"X18"  in  a  couple  of  days.  Planning  to  raise  him  on  packed  food  rather  than  live  food.

 Sriharrsha!

Thats  a  nice  fish  you  have.     Rock On

I  really  appreciate  the  fact  that  you  are  against  feeding  it  live  food.  Live  feed  can  easily  introduce  infection,  and  so  its  best  to  stay  clear  of  that.

Feed  him  frozen  prawns,  from  the  supermarket.  I  would  also  advise  you  to  get  hold  of  Ching  Mix,  from  anyone  who's  returning  from  the  US  [www.chingmixusa.com  ].

You  could  also  become  a  member  on  www.flowerhornusa.com.  Its  a  nice  siet,  with  a  lot  of  resourceful  people,  and  you  can  read  up  a  lot  of  stuff,  and  treat  your  flowerhorn  well.

I  would  also  suggest  you  add  a  little  bit  of  gravel,  thats  about  2  to  3  mm,  without  any  sharp  edges.  Flowerhorns  like  to  play  with  it,  and  this  helps  it  by  polishing  their  teeth  too.  By  polishing,  I  mean  making  it  blunt,  so  its  no  sharp.

You  could  also  make  a  beefheart  mix,  adding  a  lot  of  prawns,  calcium,  vitamins,  spirulina,  garlic,  and  astaxanthin  too.  This  is  what  I  used  to  feed  my  friends  flowerhorns,  that  I  was  holding  onto  for  some  time,  till  he  got  his  tanks  ready.  You  can  see  remarkable  growth  and  development  if  you  feed  this  food.

 HTH!

Its  a  fantastic  fish  you've  got  there   ,  it  is  amazing  to  see  such  long  fins  on  a  six  incher,  keep  him  in  a  tank  atleast  40"  long  and  18"  wide  I've  seen  14"  specimens.
And  remember,  for  a  flowerhorn  the  thickness  of  glass  recommended  is  8mm  ,  these  guys  like  hitting  the  wall  really  hard  sometimes.

Thank  you  all  for  your  informative  replies.

I  am  currently  feeding  him  High-Red  and  Bread  Worms(not  blood  worms).

I  came  across  a  few  sites  wherein  they  say  its  possible  to  stimulate  the  growth  of  the  hump  and  colors  by  placing  a  mirror  in  front  of  the  fish(outside  the  tank,  of  course!)  for  sometime  everyday!  Is  this  information  correct?  Is  it  OK??  Thanks  again.

Lot  of  people  suggest  the  mirror  method  to  make  them  more  colourful  and  have  their  nuchal  humps  grow  big.

But  in  my  opinion,  your  fish  is  a  potential  one.  Give  him  good  environment  to  grow  up.  Colourful  back  ground  and  colored  gravel.  Do  regular  and  frequent  waterchanges.  Feed  different  qualities  of  food  -  not  just  a  staple  food.

Mirror  methods  tend  to  stress  the  fish.

 Sure  venki25!

I'll  try  my  best  to  give  him  (her??)  different  varieties  of  food.  Im  gonna  leave  for  US  in  a  month  and  will  send  chingmix  for  him!

Coming  to  filtration,  I  bought  an  over-head  external  filter  with  a  powerhead  (900  ltrs/hr  throughput).  Apart  from  the  default  white-sponge  pad,  do  you  guys  recommend  any  additional  media  for  better  bacteria  colonization??

 Thanks.
