 No  plant  fertilizer.  That's  Edit.
All  higher  organisms  are  made  up  from  the  same  basic  elements.  Fish  food  is  manufactured  mainly  from  living  organisms  usually  fish.
In  our  coastal  areas  the  edible  fish  are  processed  for  export  and  are  also  tinned/canned  which  goes  mostly  to  our  small  land  locked  sister  states  of  the  northeast  and  to  the  army.
The  fish  waste;  the  fish  heads,  the  tail  ends,  fins  and  guts  are  dried  and  then  used  to  manufacture  expensive  plant  fertilizer  of  the  highest  quality.

Flakes,  tablets,  pellet  foods  contain  all  the  nutrients  required  for  fish  as  well  as  plants.
Many  fish  foods  are  high  in  nutrient  content  and  once  these  foods  are  broken  down,  these  nutrients  are  available  for  the  plants  to  use.
Small  fish  especially  digest  food  quickly  and  excrete  a  large  majority  of  the  foods  useful  elements.
The  fact  that  plants  use  fish  waste  as  a  source  of  fertilization  benefits  both  the  fish  and  the  plants.
Most  fish  foods  are  high  in  phosphate  and  potassium.  In  a  well  fed  aquarium  that  could  provide  enough  nutrients  for  most  though  not  all  plants.
Warning:  Do  not  get  carried  over  and  overfeed  your  fish.  The  leftovers  are  sure  to  cause  problems.

Several  new  posts  claim  that  they  use  no  fertilizer  to  grow  their  plants.  Those  posts  are  Edit.

 Hi,

Strange  are  the  way  of  hobbyist's.  I  know  of  a  person  who  talks  about  everything  concerned  with  aquarium  especially  planted  aquarium's.

When  I  asked  him  about  his  fertilising  schedule  he  told  me  all  he  did  was  now  and  then  press  any  dead  leaves  into  the  gravel  and  the  plants  grew  excellently.
I  was  physced  by  his  facial  expression  when  he  said  it  as  if  it  was  common  knowledge  and  I  was  a  fool  not  to  know.

I  recently  got  a  chance  to  see  his  aquarium  and  believe  me  it  was  nowhere  what  I  had  anticipated.  Among  assorted  fishes  he  had  two  crypts  which  were  turning  yellow  and  one  hygrophilla  corymbosa  with  only  two  leaves.  I  really  could  not  blame  him  since  in  his  opinion  it  was  his  answer  to  Takashi  Amano.

So  it  all  boils  down  to  your  individual  expectations  and  if  by  chance  you  are  one  who  wants  a  aquarium  like  nature  aquarium  ,  Trevor  is  right.  You  cannot  do  without  a  fertilizer  and  maintenance  regimen  along  with  CO2  elements.

 Regards,
 Nayak.

 Hi  Trevor,

Probably  what  they  mean  but  do  not  say  is  that  they  don't  dose  ferts  separately.

 Hi  all,
Totally  agree  with  Trevor  and  Nayak  there  is  no  way  you  could  do  away  with  fertz,
I  got  ambitious  and  tried  a  tank  with  no  fertz,  but  it  is  only  a  matter  of  time  you  realize  you  plants  do  not  grow  as  expected.

I  have  a  planted  tank  with  no  C02  and  i  know  the  difference  when  i  compare  it  with  the  other  tanks  with  C02.

I  have  Echinodorus  in  the  tank  with  no  C02  and  seems  to  need  all  the  time  in  the  world  to  grow,  if  i  am  not  wrong  it  seems  to  have  grown  one  new  leaf  in  the  last  month  and  the  Echinodorus  in  the  tank  with  C02  is  growing  out  of  the  tank.

The  right  kind  of  fertz  and  the  right  amount  of  C02  is  definitely  required.

It  is  important  for  all  to  understand  we  are  trying  to  duplicate  nature  and  the  only  thing  to  do  is  to  do  100%  water  changes  every  day  because  most  of  these  plants  are  found  in  places  where  there  is  flowing  water.  If  this  may  not  be  possible  then  we  need  to  use  alternate  methods.

 Rgds

Silly  Question  :  Would  adding  Mineral  and  vitamin  tablets  to  the  tank  make  any  positive  or  negative  impact  on  the  plants  and/or  fish  ?  We  get  2  types  of  tablets  -  hard  powder  type  and  liquid/get  in  capsule  type.

Answer  is  very  simple....  Plant  Fertilizers  are  essential  for  every  plants  and  thats  why  they  are  being  sold  globaly.
