 Hi  Niranjan,

1st  of  all  you  just  let  us  know  why  do  you  want  to  feed  your  fish  with  veg  foods.  There  are  lots  of  ready  made  nutritional  fish  foods  available  in  the  market  which  contains  protien  over  60%.

 hi  Dj

Its  not  that  i  want  veg  food  in  for  my  fish  But  as  DIY  Home  Made  food   i  v  limitation  of  using  VEG  materials  only..In  our  Brahmin  families  we  dont  even  think  of  bringing  non  veg  at  home  cooking  is  far  away..
Basic  is  i  need  food  which  i  can  prepare  at  home  easily  thats  it..we  in  rural  part  of  Maharashtra  dont  get  much  varieties  or  Brands  to  c  at  LFS...each  time  we  need  to  rush  to  MUMBAI(600kms)  is  not  possible..so  trying  for  something  good  for  fish  and  me  too..

 thanx

Good  for  you  maybe,  not  for  the  fish  Smile  .  There  are  several  branded  foods  from  Tetra,  OSI  and  others  with  high  nutrition  and  protein.  You  can  buy  a  tin  which  will  last  you  a  year.

As  I  told  u  we  dont  get  these  BRANDS  in  our  markets. These  LFS  guys  sell  some  stupid  brands  pellets  which  have  a  FISH  pic  on  the  pack  and  nothing  else...better  to  prepare  some  thing  HomeMade...

Fish  will  eat  boiled  rice  and  puffed  rice  (puri).
That  is  what  is  fed  to  fish  in  most  of  the  temple  ponds.
They  have  no  choice  or  say  in  the  matter.

Many  fish  like  the  Tropheus  Moorii  ,  Tropheus  Duboisi,  Sucker  mouth  fishes  like  Ottoclinclus  should  definitely  be  given  enough  algae  and  green  based  food.
I  am  not  against  you  feeding  your  fish  veg  food.
When  and  if  you  get  a  chance  try  to  organize  these  foods  and  give  your  fish  sometime  a  chance  to  choose.

On  which  part  of  Maharashtra  do  you  stay.  I  guess  it  wont  be  a  jungle.  TetraBits  is  a  kind  of  food  which  are  available  in  almost  all  LFS  accross  INDIA.

I  have  similar  issues  with  storage  of  non-veg  stuff  in  the  fridge.
And  this  being  Shravan  month  of  Hindu  calendar,  the  rules  r  stricter.  Razz

I  got  2  recipes  from  DeadlyCoolGuy  from  Coimbatore  (Dunno  his  real  name)  that  I  would  like  to  share  with  u.

 First  one  -
 You  require:

 1.  Pudina  (Mentha  Piperita)  --  100  gms  [Fresh  Green]
 2.  Pashan  Bheda/Indian  Borage/Oregano  (Coleus  Aromaticus)  --  100  gms  [Fresh  Green]  (It's  called  "Doddapatre  soppu"  in  Kannada)
 3.  Garlic  --  10  cloves  [Top  skin  peeled]
 4.  Asafetida  (acts  as  a  laxative)  --  Powdered  [a  pinch]
 5.  Baby  milk  supplement  powder  [Any  Make]

 Preparation:

 1.  Churn  Pudina+Oregano+Garlic+Asafetida  in  a  Blender  till  they  become  small  bits
(Don’t  grind  to  paste.  And  don't  add  water!!)
 2.  Put  this  mix  on  to  a  flat  plate  and  add  2tbsp  (flat)  baby  milk  supplement  powder
 3.  Mix  well  (with  clean  hands),  smoothly.
 4.  Roll  them  into  threads  (by  hand  OR  on  plate),  earthworm  thickness.
 5.  Freeze.

 Use:

Feed  as  often  as  you  please  which  should  be  consumed  by  the  fishes  by  2  mins
(at  least  once  in  a  day)

 Results:
 1.  Good  coloration
 2.  Resistance  to  diseases
 3.  Increases  appetite
 4.  Eases  fish  constipation  OR  blocked  stomach
 5.  Fresh  Breath(???  Smile  )

Second  one  involves  pellets  that  may  contain  nonveg  stuff.  but  our  mom  is  not  gonna  know  about  it.  (I  hope)
 You  require:
 A.  For  Wet  Grinding:

 1.  Pudina  (Mentha  Piperita)  --  100  gms  [Fresh  Green]
 2.  Pashan  Bheda/Indian  Borage/Oregano  (Coleus  Aromaticus)  --  100  gms  [Fresh  Green]
 3.  Garlic  --  10  cloves  [Top  skin  peeled]
 4.  Asafetida  (acts  as  a  laxative)  --  Powdered  [a  pinch]
 5.  Carrot  (for  color  enhancing)  --  1  Medium  Sized
 6.  Banana  --  1  Medium  Size  (Best  variety  available,  locally)
 7.  Evion  400mg  Cap.  --  2  Nos.  (Use  inside  liquid)

 B.  For  Dry  Grinding:

 1.  Spirulina  Capsules  --  5  Nos.
 2.  Becosules  Capules  --  5  Nos.
 3.  Limcee  /  Suckcee  Tablets  --  2  Nos.
 4.  Shellkal  500mg  Tab  --  1  No.
 5.  Tetra  Bits  --  2  Tbspns.
 6.  Tetra  Staple  Food  (Green  Flakes)  --  1  Tbsp.
 7.  Azoo  Pellets  --  2  Tbspns.
 8.  Nutrafin  Max  --  1  Tbsp.
 9.  Wheat  Germ  (increses  males  fertility)  --  1  Tbsp.

 Preparation:

 1.  Churn  items  listed  under  Section  A  in  a  Blender  till  they  become  small  bits  -  coarse  paste.
(Don’t  grind  to  paste.  And  don't  add  water!!)
 2.  Grind  to  powder  the  items  listed  under  Section  B
 3.  Mix  well  (with  clean  hands),  the  Powder  to  the  Paste  in  small  portions  and  proportions,  smoothly.
 4.  Put  this  mix  on  to  a  flat  plate  and  Roll  them  into  threads  (by  hand  OR  on  plate),  earthworm  thickness.
 5.  Freeze  and  feed.

Most  Importantly,  this  does  not  Cloud  Water  and  if  leftover  in  the  tank  (unconsumed)

I  have  tried  these  and  find  them  really  good.  Just  one  thing-  The  tank  required  frequent  partial  water  changes.  Smile  Understandable.  I  think  we  can  use  gelatin  as  a  binder,  want  to  confirm  from  fellow  experts.

Thanx  again  to  DeadlyCoolGuy  for  these  wonderful  recipes.  Smile

Its  true  that  we  dont  live  in  jungle  Smile   but  the  LFS  guys  dont  sell  any  thing  other  than  such  common  stuff  that  costs  u  around  30-40  Rs  for  a  100g  packet....
And  the  reason  for  this  may  be  they  never  sell  FISH  other  than  GOLD,ANGELS  and  Livebarers  .  Once  in  1  your  u  will  c  Oscar  or  Parrot  in  their  Shop...ha  ha
