 Hi,

 I  have  3.5"  Flowerhorns  in  an  outdoor  tank  (no  direct  sun  light).     Can  I  have  a  5+"  pleco  to  avoid  algae  build  up?

 Has  anyone  kept  a  Pleco  with  Flowerhorn?   If  yes,  please  let  me  know  your  experience.

 Cheers,
 Jai

 Hi  Jai,
 Only  smaller  Plecos  are  known  to  scrap  and  consume  algae  in  the  tank.As  they  grow  up,  they  tend  to  lose  their  interest  in  algae  and  would  need  more  veggies  like  cucumber  etc  in  their  diet!
 Also  not  sure  how  far  this  is  true  but  there  have  been  reports  of  Plecos  developing  taste  for  slime  of  large  bodied  fishes  when  poorly  fed...

 i've  never  kept  a  fh,  but  i  just  get  the  feeling  that  your  fh  will  probably  tear  your  plec  apart.  fhs  are  really  mean  fish.  my  friend  had  a  2"  fh  that  ripped  (literally)  a  6"  spotted  shovel  nose  catfish  apart.

 i  think  a  scrubber  or  anti-algal  dosing  would  be  the  best  option.

 @babu
 plecs  and  other  sucker  mouthed  fish  (including  AEs)  will  even  at  a  relatively  young  age  attach  themselves  and  rasp  the  slime  off  the  skin  of  other  fish.  i  once  saw  a  discus  with  a  sizeable  plec  attached  to  it,  and  it  is  not  a  pleasant  sight.

 Yes!  you  can  keep  a  pleco  with  FH.  Initially  FH  will  do  lots  of  DHISUM  DHISUM  to  the  pleco  but  later  he  will  accept  the  pleco  as  his  tank  mate.  Very Happy   Chuckle

 rocky  is  right...Initially  the  plecao  would  be  not  be  welcomed  into  the  tank  knowing  the  species  flowerhorns  are...but  after  a  while  the  flowerhorns  would  just  get  used  to  the  pleco...Plecos  being  hard  and  tough  skinned  can  survive  the  onslot  most  times...Have  seen  Plecos  kept  with  piranhas  too  for  the  very  same  thick  skinned  reason   Very Happy

 I  never  had  a  flowerhorn,  but  along  with  my  cichlids  my  plecos  are  doing  fine,  but  i  always  see  nipped  fins,  infact  no  major  damage  seen  and  more  astonishing  thing  is  the  bigger  pleco  tries  to  fight  them  back,  dashing  them,  cornering  them,  but  in  the  end  the  pleco  is  found  to  quit  the  match(they  cant  fight  as  long  as  cichlids,  lol!).  It  especially  happens  when  they  are  anywhere  around  the  cichlid's  territory.

 i  have  3  flower  horns  and  and  all  three  have  pleco's  with  them,the  flower  horns  initially  start  chasing  the  pleco  and  then  after  some  days  they  ignore  it  and  accept  them  as  their  in  mate..you  defnitely  defnitely  can  keep  plecos  with  FH's.

 Large  plecos  with  small  FH  will  be  a  nice  combo,  but  if  a  small  pleco  has  to  stay  with  a  large  FH,  then  the  FH  can  easily  crush  and  squeeze  it  to  death,  especially  if  they  are  half  the  size  of  FH.

 It  would  probably  be  the  end  of  both  of  them  if  a  FH  swallowed  a  pleco.

 My  FHs  are  about  4"  now.   I  tried  introducing  a  4"  pleco  and  it  didn't  survive      Should  I  introduce  >6"  pleco.     What  would  be  the  source  of  food  of  pleco?

 @Jay
 To  be  on  safe  side  add  a  large  pleco,  upto  one  foot  long.

 Just  to  share  a  strage  occurance  at  one  of  the  LFS  in  Chennai.  A  huge  pleco  was  attacking  a  7  inch  flowerhorn.  All  though  the  flowerhorn  was  swift  enough,  the  pleco  kept  chasing  the  flowerhorn.

 I  introduced  a  4"  pleco  to  my  8"  FH's  20G  tank.  And  the  poor  newbie  was  chased  all  around  the  tank  until  he  found  respite  behind  a  small  space  near  the  power  filter.  Thats  because  the  FH  can't  reach  that  area..  Very Happy
 30  days  later,  its  the  same  thing..  The  pleco's  still  clinging  to  that  small  area..  because  even  for  a  inch  that  he  moves,  the  FH  takes  his  case  royally...     Chuckle
