I  have  a  dozen  c.moori's  and  I  happend  to  watch  the  ritual  yesterday  when  I  sat  gazing  at  them.  It  was  my  first  time  that  I  watched  a  a  fish  lay  eggs  and  it  was  immediately  picked  up  by  the  male  in  its  mouth.  Wow  that  was  awesome.

I  understand  that  the  males  hold  the  eggs  for  21  days  in  its  mouth.  Experts  can  you  please  suggest  what  needs  to  be  done  next.

 Dear  Camy
First  of  all  Congratulations  for  successfully  spawning  C.  Moori.  From  my  experience   I  suggest  you  to  separate  the  female/male(  as  you  describe)   holding  eggs  in  her/his   mouth  (pseudo  mother  hood  where  male  fish  behave  like  female  fish  and  holding  eggs-maximum  found  in  Haplocromis  sp.)and  place  her/him  in  a  separate  aquarium  say  about  Dimn.  of   1-1/2’  x   8  x   8  inch  with  air  stone  and  thermostat(28-29  C)  for  15  days(21  days  without  thermostat). After  15  days  she/he   will  release  15-20  tiny  fry’s  if  everything’s  is  going  OK.  Meanwhile  she/he  will  not  take  a  single  pallets,  so  do  not  try  to  feed  her/him,  just  leave  her/him  alone.  You   can  also   add  a  few  drops  of  Acraflavin(Rid  All)  to  prevent  fungus  infections.
Best  of  luck  and  looking  forward  to  hear  good  news  at  your  end  Thumb Up
 Regards
 Kaushik

 Hi  Kaushik,

Thanks  for  the  inputs.  I  am  away  from  home  for  the  next  12  days.  I  have  them  on  auto  feeder.  Do  you  think  I  my  chances  are  less  due  to  me  being  away  and  not  being  able  to  isolate  the  fish.

If  so,  ill  have  to  wait  for  them  to  spawn  again.  Thanks  for  your  inputs.

No  probs  dude.  Let  them  be  in  same  tank,  nothing  will  happen.  Pull  out  the  fsih,  on  day  21,  and  strip.

Here's  how  I  strip  my  fish.  Make  sure  your  hands  are  wet.  Get  the  fish  in  a  net,  and  hold  the  fish  ,  holding  so  the  fish  is  in  about  2  inches  of  water.  Hold  the  fish,  with  your  right  hand,  with  3  fingers,  so  your  index  and  thumb  are  free.  With  your  index  and  thuimb  fingers,  gently,  press  on  either  side  of  the  fish,  so  it  has  to  open  its  mouth.  This  is  when  you  see  the  magic.  Fries  swim  out,  by  themselves.  And  hold  it  open  that  way  for  a  few  seconds,  till  you  are  sure  all  the  fries  have  swam  out.

You  can  then  return  the  adult  to  the  main  tank.  Move  your  fries  to  their  tank.  What  I  do  is,  using  water  from  the  main  tank,  I  setup  a  tiny  tank  for  fries.  And  I  perform  the  stripping  in  this  tank,  so  I  dont  have  to  keep  moving  the  fry!

 Happy  babysitting.

You  can  try  this  method,  but  I  dont  recommend  it:  http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/stripping_fry.php

 Hi  Nithin,

Thanks  for  the  information.  While  the  stipping  method  has  its  own  pro's  and  con's,  is  there  anyway  the  fish  releases  the  fry  naturally.  Just  curious  to  know.

Lawrence  -  They  are  now  in  a  different  tank,  moved  them  to  a  three  footer,  currently  bare  bottom  as  my  new  4  footer  tank  is  WIP.

 Hi  Prem,

I  have  had  these  guys  breed  in  my  tank  a  long  time  back.  What  i  woud  suggest  is,  just  put  the  female  in  a  bare  bottom  tank.  A  tank  2'  2'  2'  would  do  perfectly.  You  will  not  lose  any  fries  as  the  female  just  tends  to  spit  the  eggs  or  the  fry  out  but  will  take  them  back  into  its  mouth  soon.  Also  when  it  sees  that  the  fry  are  big  enough  to  survive  by  themselves  she  will  stop  taking  them  into  their  mouth,  this  is  when  you  take  her  out.  But  remember  DO  NOT  put  her  back  immediately  in  the  main  tank,  she  will  need  to  get  strong  and  only  then  introduce  her  and  after  lights  out.  The  male  tends  to  be  aggresive  when  the  female  is  reintroduced.

Rest  they  are  very  easy  to  keep  and  breed  so  just  enjoy  the  experience.  Thumb Up

Folks  -  This  is  the  second  time  the  c.mooris  have  spawned  and  three  of  the  fishes  are  now  holding  eggs  in  its  mouth.

I  have  moved  one  fish  to  a  three  footer  bare  bottom  tank  and  have  a  sponge  filter  in  it.

The  remaining  two  fishes  are  still  in  the  main  tank.  Should  I  move  the  remaining  two  to  the  3  footer  tank  as  well.  I  am  not  sure  if  they  need  to  be  kept  separate  or  can  I  have  all  the  three  fishes  which  are  holding  eggs  in  the  same  3  foot  tank.

 Dear  Prem,

just  a  curious  doubt-have  you  cycled  your  3ft  tank?  if  you  have  not  may  be  it  will  be  stressful  for  the  fish.
 Just  my  view  Smile

 Hey  Sai,

Yes  the  three  footer  had  some  peacocks  in  it  which  i  have  moved  to  the  4  footer.

Last  time  I  was  not  able  to  track  progress  as  I  was  not  in  town.

This  time  I  was  able  to  separate  the  fish.   Thanks  for  your  input.

 Cheers,
 Prem
