 Has  anybody  on  these  forums  kept  the  Scarlet  Badis  (Badis  bengalensis/Dario  dario)?  I  came  across  this  fish  a  few  days  ago  and  i  feel  they  would  be  a  great  addition  to  my  revamped  1.5'-er.  Incidentally  i  have  never  seen  these  fish  at  any  lfs  despite  being  local  fish!

 Hi  Krishanu,
 Check  out  this  link:
 Badis  post
 I  think  Beta  has  these  fish.  I  like  them  too  but  they  are  rarely  seen  here.

 @charlie
 It's  really  kind  of  sad  that  i  cant  get  fish  that  should  be  available  in  plenty  out  here.  Especially  since  the  scarlet  badis  is  a  very  small  fish.  I  have  seen  the  ordinary  badis  (Badis  badis)  but  i  personally  find  them  to  be  very  dull.

 My  plan  was  to  have  a  planted  tank  with  several  small  indigenous  species.  While  discussing  this  with  my  LFS  guy  the  first  thing  that  came  up  were  badis.  Let's  see  what  happens!

 Not  a  very  difficult  fish  to  keep.  Best  suited  in  a  moss  tank.  Show  better  colors  in  soft  water.  Will  accept  only  live  feed  initially,  but  can  later  be  got  used  to  dried  worms.  I  keep  them  in  a  rain  forest  (not  actually)  tank  with  wild  Bettas  and  Trichopsis  sp.

 Yep,  i  was  planning  to  make  my  1.5"-er  into  a  densely  planted  moss  tank.  Would  be  lovely  if  i  could  get  a  few  of  these  fish  to  add  some  colour  to  my  tank!  Any  idea  on  where  i  could  source  them?

 @sampath
 thanks  for  the  info.  i  find  these  fish  absolutely  adorable  and  i  think  that  they  are  ideal  for  a  nano  planted  tank.

 These  fish  are  very  fussy  eaters.  See  that  you  have  sources  of  live  food  before  you  keep  these  fish.  A  heavily  planted  tank  with  plenty  of  Indian  dwarf  shrimp  breeding  will  also  help  provide  them  a  partial  source  of  live  food.

 you  may  not  see  them  very  often.  The  wild  caught  ones  i  had  were  ok  with  dried  food  quite  quickly,  but  they  died  in  summer.

 @trevor
 Thanks  for  the  info,  but  I'm  not  sure  that  I  can  get  them!  I'll  update  if  i  do!

 @babu
 Thanks  for  the  link.  Very  useful.  From  now  on  I'll  call  them  D.  dario  and  not  B.  benglensis!

 @PC
 I  actually  haven't  seen  them  ever,  even  though  they  are  supposedly  from  just  north  of  Calcutta!  I  will  however  try  Galiff  St.  one  day  just  to  try  my  luck.  Somebody  may  just  catch  them  and  bring  them  in.  An  it  is  quite  strange  that  they  are  quite  susceptible  to  high  temperatures  even  though  they  are  local  fish.

 Krishanu,  You  could  source  these  lovely  wild  caught  Bengali  fish  from  Bangalore  if  you  really  are  keen.  Smile

 Sampath,  the  said  tank  was  in  the  same  fish  room  where  you  saw  the  marines.  It's  the  same  old  cracked  moulded  tank.  Bare  bottom  now  with  a  few  water  filled  bottles  of  money  plant  and  some  other  plant.  Now  the  roots  have  creeped  all  over  the  main  tank  and  i  call  that  'sort  of  rainforest'.

 Rainwater  actually  fills  in  due  to  the  open  balcony  and  no  worries  about  the  water  level  too.  The  tiny  crack  acts  as  the  outflow.   Very Happy

 @trevor
 thanks  for  the  info.  what  a  pity  if  it  comes  to  that!  and  might  i  say  that  is  one  helluva  picture  you  have  there!  it  truly  brings  out  the  beauty  of  this  fish.

 @shankar
 could  you  tell  me  about  the  temperament  of  this  fish?  the  gentleman  whor  runs  my  lfs  said  that  they  are  extremely  aggressive  towards  one  another.  he  also  mentioned  that  they  are  very  partial  towards  taking  residence  in  caves.  is  this  true?
