I  have  had  Bettas  succesfully  for  more  than  2  years.  I  think  all  it  requires  is  a  nice  Pet  jar,  with  water  changes  on  alternate  days(make  sure  the  water  is  damn  good).

The  best  feed  so  far  I  have  seen  is  mosquitoes.  Serious!  Even  Kiran  advocates  this.

Once  in  a  while  preventive  use  of  the  good  old  meth  blue/  salt  combo  worked  very  well  for  me,  even  though  I  had  the  temperature  dipping  pretty  low  at  Coimbatore.

The  one  common  thing  that  most  aquarists  do  is  put  2  bettas  side  by  side,  just  to  see  them  flare  up,  and  enjoy  the  scenario.  This  is  not  a  good  practice,  and  can  stress  the  fish  a  lot,  thereby  reducing  it's  lifespan  considerably.

I  have  kept  my  Bettas  in  10  x  16  x  10  inch  tanks.  They  did  the  best  there.
I  would  not  advice  you  to  keep  them  in  bowls  or  bottles.  Even  though  they  survive  they  just  about  do  it.  Keep  a  heater  in  if  temperature  drops  below  26  deg  C.  Live  foods  are  best  but  my  bettas  did  well  on  dry  foods  too.

For  best  results  keep  them  in  aquariums  holding  atleast  20  liters  water  and  do  a  weekly  50%  water  change  a  10  x  10  x  10  inch  tank  will  be  great.
if  you  are  keeping  a  lot  of  Bettas  keep  these  aquariums  next  to  each  other  but  place  a  dark  cardboard  between  the  aquariums  so  that  the  bettas  are  not  continuously  flaring  and  stressed.

If  you  are  keeping  them  in  a  bare  bottom  tank  then  use  a  dark  styrofoam  sheet  at  the  base  instead  of  white  thermocoele.

Java  Fern  on  driftwood  and/or  rocks  will  give  the  fish  a  lot  of  security.

Here  is  my  recipie  for  bettas:
a  tank  24"x10"x10"  divided  into  6"  sections  with  perforated  clear  acrylic.  place  a  sponge  filter  at  one  end,  and  keep  the  tank  covered.  A  heater  is  required  only  if  the  ambient  temp.  dips  below  20  celsius  for  extended  periods.  provide  some  hydrilla/java  moss/watersprite  for  cover.  feed  live  foods,  change  50%  water  twice  weekly.
regarding  fish..fighting  fish  need  4-6  months  to  attain  full  finnage,  so  the  large  specimens  in  stoers  are  probably  just  at  their  peak  and  soon  go  downhill....so  buy  juveniles,  preferably  from  a  breeder.
IMO,  the  traditional  bettas  and  cambodians  are  much  hardier  than  the  fancy  tailed  ones,  they  are  also  better  parents,  so  go  with  the  plainer  varieties  till  u  have  some  experience.
some  salt  added  to  the  water(  1  tsp/10  L)  is  also  beneficial.
u  can  also  keep  bettas  in  glass/plastic  containers  as  long  as  they  are  of  atleast  2L  capacity.
That  said  I  also  keep  bettas  in  1L  jars  and  even  polythene  bags  suspended  in  tanks,  but  that  is  another  story.

 Ok  retro,

one  of  the  most  common  problem  I  found  in  keeping  bettas  is  that  their  tail  starts  drooping,  folded  and  then  they  get  a  bloated  belly.  The  finla  symptoms  are  that  they  just  stay  at  the  tank  bottom  and  eventually  waste  off.  So  what  do  you  think  this  must  be,  and  if  in  case  u  are  able  to  diagonis  tell  me  the  remedy  for  this  too.....

by  bloated  belly,  i  presume  u  mean  dropsy  i.e.  their  scales  stand  out  too?
I  get  this  problem  sometimes  with  old  fish.  The  causes  are  incorrect  diet,  poor  water  quality  and  with  females,  egg  binding.
the  remedy  in  my  experience  is  a  diet  principally  of  live  foods  (mosquito  larvae  are  best)and  regular  water  changes.
Once  they  do  get  ill,  there  is  no  cure,  though  i  have  heard  unsubstantiated  claims  that  feedig  the  fish  multivitamin  tabs  will  effect  a  cure  if  treated  early.

people  say  bettas  do  well  on  tetrabits,  mine  never  eat  that  Sad   but  i  have  supply  of  mosquito  larva  going  all  the  time.  i  also  give  them  tiny  bits  of  dried  egg  yolk,  they  never  turn  that  down.
