 Folks,

I  plan  to  set  up  a  species  tank  for  wood  shrimps  (25  nos)  and  amano  shrimps  (15  nos),  that  are  now  in  the  main  tank.  I  am  not  able  to  identify  both  species  from  the  current  lot   Crying or Very sad  .  Any  tips  on  differentiating  these  would  be  very  helpful?

 Regards
 Prasoon

Amano  shrimp  will  have  spots  on  their  sides  and  adults  will  generally  be  twice  the  size  of  wood  shrimp.
A  few  good  photos  would  make  the  task  easier.

 Dear  Prasoon
Slightly  differ.Amano  shrimps  are  smaller  (4-5  cm)  than  wood  shrimp(8-12  cm)and  wood  shrimp  have  white  patch  in  their  shell  whille   in  amano   you  may  find  black   spots  in  line  at  the  side.

 HI  prasoon,

I  agree  with  Pradeep.  Amano's  are  indeed  bigger  than  wood  shrimps.

 http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_shrimp.php

Apart  from  this,  at  a  semi  adilt  stage  you  wood  be  able  to  distinguish  them  by  their  color.  In  clear  water  the  the  color  of  the  woods  can  vary  from  dark  brown  to  lighter  shades.  Whereas  amano's  have  more  of  a  transparent  looks  with  the  lines  and  spots  running  on  their  sides.

I  have  both  theses  kept  in  a  moss  setup.  Will  try  to  post  few  pictures  for  your  reference  today.

 regards,
 Surya

 Kaushik,
You  are  thinking  of  Atyopsis  moluccensis  which  is  very  different  from  the  more  commonly  found  Indian  Dwarf  Shrimp  or  Caridina  sp..

Another  commonly  found  shrimp  which  could  be  cofused  for  the  Amano  shrimp  is    the  Ghost  Shrimp.

Any  of  these  fit  the  bill  ,Prasoon?

 Hi  Prasoon,

Pradeep  is  right,  Kaushik  you  have  got  your  facts  mixed  up.
Prasoon  also  note  that  the  wood  shrimp  are  good  chameleons,  and  tend  to  change  color  to  the  surroundings,  where  as  the  Amano  will  stay  white.

I  will  have  to  post  my  shrimp  pictures  for  a  proper  I.D  and  may  have  to  rename  my  shrimp.
   I  am  utterly  confused.  Shocked

 Folks,

Thanks  a  lot  for  your  comments.   Thumb Up  The  problem  is  all  the  40  shrimps  are  in  almost  same  size,  around  1  inch.  Let  me  go  back  to  my  tank  with  all  these  info  and  try  picking  out  those  guys!   Smile

@Surya/Kaushik/trevor  -  Thanks  for  your  inputs.

@Pradeep-  Couple  of  them  have  a  band  like  this,  but  are  no  way  colorful  as  in  the  pic  -  'Atyopsis  moluccensis'.  Nope,  the  ones  I  have  dont  look  like  the  Ghost  Shrimps.

@Mayur  -  As  usual,  thanks  boss  -  your  tips  are  very  helpful!

 Regards,
 Prasoon

Good  photos  Surya  and  Hayath/Vyas.  Thumb Up
I  have  a  gut  feeling  that  Prasoon  does  not  have  any  Amano  shrimp.  Just  a  hunch.
He  could  be  having  Indian  dwarf  shrimp  and  wood  shrimp.
He  has  not  yet  posted  any  description  nor  photos.
Prasoon,  Will  be  waiting  for  Pics  and/or  any  more  information.  Smile
