Care  level  is  fairly  the  same  for  both  species.  Might  not  do  very  well  in  hard  and  alkaline  water.

Well  settled  fish  would  accept  any  food  meant  for  smaller  tetra.

 Dear  Nandu
My  opinion  Cardinals  because  Neons  have  a  shale  life  of  540  days  not  more.
 Regards
 Kaushik

Cardinals  certainly  look  better  and  are  hardy.  Prefer  soft  water  (regular  tap  water  -  aged,  should  do),  and  feed  can  be  micropellets,  dried  tubifex  worms,  dried  blood  worms  and  even  an  occassional  treat  of  brine  shrimp  nauplii.

I  have  about  5  Cardinals  in  my  1.5  feet  planted  tank.  I  introduced  them  fairly  early  in  my  tank  say  about  1.5  mnths  from  the  setup.  To  keep  them  in  shape  i  did  water  change  every  3  days  for  a  month  and  it  worked  for  me.
Although  due  to  work  i  wasn't  able  to  do  a  water  change  for  10  days  and  the  cardinals  were  first  one  to  catch  white  spots,  the  weakest  one  among  them  perished...Now  after  5  months  from  its  start  all  is  hunky  dory(i  sort  of  overcrowded  the  tank  by  4-5  fish  Smile,  not  proud  of  it  though!!!)
My  tank  is  an  planted  tank  beginners  effort.  Care  level  may  vary  for  an  experience...  But  one  thing  is  sure  they  are  joy  to  watch  and  once  you  get  hang  of  them  you'll  always  prefer  cardinals  over  neon  Smile

Neons  are  cheaper  and  hence  easily  replaced.
Cardinals  are  more  "showy"  and  hardier,  but  harder  to  come  by  and  Vitamin  M  would  be  necessary  for  a  shoal.

I  feel  cardinals  are  the  better  option  to  neons,
Adding  to  Suraj  list  of  food,  you  can  also  feed  them  Tetra  bits,  Hikari  pellets  (  for  tetra),  shrimp  flakes  etc.
Note  while  feeding  fish  make  sure  you  do  not  over  feed  them,  that  is  kind  of  where  most  problems  start.

Vitamin  M  as  in  moolah,  money,  cash,  dough,  dollars,  green,  bread,  bucks,  loot,  currency,  greenbacks,  bills,  coin,  ducats,  scratch,  cheese,  dead  presidents,  paper,  beans,  benjamins,  cabbage.

I  don't  know  about  other  places  but  here  in  Bangy  ,

 1  cardinal  ~  5  neons

Putting  together  even  a  small  shoal  of  10  cardinals  is  pretty  hard  on  the  pocket.

 Vitamin  M  =  money.

A  cardinal  tetra  will  cost  around  3-4  times  more  than  a  neon.  Certainly  looks  better  than  a  neon.

I  remember  Nitin  telling  me  a  joke...  Saar,  this  is  the  original  (cardinal  tetra)  and  that  is  the  duplicate  (neon  tetra).  Chuckle

That's  a  very  common  term  dear.  People  from  the  IT  (Income  Tax)  sector  are  related  to  Vitamin  M.  Wink
