I  was  away  from  home  for  last  one  week.  yesterday  when  i  saw  my  orandas,  their  tails  are  having  some  dark  patches  and  seems  to  be  not  well.  i  planned  to  change  the  whole  water.  While  watching  my  oranda  closely,  i  Could  see  that  there  were  some  parasites  attached  to  it  in  its  tail  fin.  They  are  round  or  oval  in  shape  with  having  small  legs.  They  are  very  light  in  color.  Its  very  difficult  to  find  them  until  we  feel  the  fins.
They  cling  to  the  Tail  fins  of  gold  fish.i  removed  them  one  by  one  and  killed  them  by  putting  in  salt  water.

Any  idea  what  are  these  parasites  ?  how  to  control  them?  I  am  sure  it  should  have  laid  some  eggs  and  it  will  attack  once  again  my  fishes.

Pls  help  me  to  remove  these  parasites  from  my  aquarium.

Just  put  a  handfull  of  rock  salt  into  the  tank  for  full  tank  treatment,  change  50%  water  for  4-5  day  &  repeat  the  rock  treatment,  syphon  up  the  gravel.

Take  care  of  water,  fish  will  take  of  themself.
Weekly  atleast  50%  of  water  change  is  must  on  goldies  tank.

And  please,  do  share  the  full  tank  details  (size,  tank  mates,  filter,  gravel,  food  etc  etc)

 Dear  SM
For  external  Parasites(Gyrodactylidiasis)  Bath  the  Fishes  with  KMnO4  solutions  (  10  ppm)  1  minute  only.  Then  use  Povidine  Iodine  water  soluable  cream  to  the  affected  area.
Also  wash  the  whole  tank  with  KMnO4  solutions.  May  use  gentomycine  sulphate  for  quick  wound  recovery.
 Regards
 Kaushik

I  had  faced  this  problem  long  time  ago  and  some  of  my  carp  and  gold  fishes  even  lost  their  eyes  to  this  parasite.   I  tried  many  things  but  failed  and  finally  I  decided  to  do  the  easiest  thing  I  put  each  of  fish  in  shallow  water  and  manually  removed  the  parasite  from  the  fishes  and  killed  them  by  putting  them   in  another  mug  with  few  drop  of  Detol.     I  know  it  sounds  silly  but  its  not  very  difficult.   The  only  thing  is  that  your  fish  should  feel  comfortable  in  your  hands.   Then  I  kept  them  in  another  aquarium  and   completely  over  hauled  my  tank  and  it  never  reappared  in  my  aquarium

 Hi

Seems  like  Fish  Lice(Argulus)  to  me.However  pictures  might  help  to  identify  it  accurately. These  can  be  removed  from  body  of  the  fish  using  tweezers.
Treating  the  tank  with  Organophosphate  such  as  Dimilin  will  help  to  eradicate  the  complete  life  cycle  of  the  parasite.Dimilin  can  be  used  in  tanks  with  Fish  and  has  no  negative  effect  on  nitrogen  cycle. It  cannot  be  a  overdose  to  fishes  at  any  concentration!
Dimilin  is  available  in  Agriculture  Pesticide  stores. If  Dimilin  isn't  available  then  try  Waterlife's  Parazin  P  20  Tabs.

Doctor,  KMNO4  is  a  like  a  double  edged  sword  and  can  burn  the  fishes  as  a  whole  if  administered  improperly.I'm  not  sure  if  fishes  can  withstand  10ppm.3-4ppm  is  safe  for  prolonged  usage  upto  4  days.
It  is  risky  for  a  beginner  to  try  with..  The  calculations  of  ppm  solution  has  to  be  VERY  accurate  in  a  laboratory  scale  balances  to  avoid  disaster.

Btw  have  you  tested  10ppm  on  fishes  and  how  did  you  make  your  10ppm  solution?

Babu  has  it  pretty  much  spot  on.
Dimilin,  Parazin  or  Prazi  would  do  the  job.

We  use  KMNO4  to  kill  snails  here  in  Blr,  Dr.  Not  sure  if  thats  what  you  want  to  be  doing  to  your  fish.

Oops!  sorry  for  the  typos  that's  my  mistake  and  wasn't  intentional.   Doh.I  have  edited  the  post  with  correct  the  spelling.
I  do  respect  your  degree.I  also  have  ppl  with  same  degree  in  my  family  too  and  have  hence  know  the  importance  of  it.  Smile

I  have  a  great  respect  for  you  and  indeed  I  recommended  one  of  our  IAH  member  to  contact  you  for  a  medicine(Tricide  Neo)  he  was  looking  for  treating  internal  bacterial  infection  for  his  goldfish.

Haven't  used  10ppm  kmno4  solution  for  short  term  bath  and  hence  wanted  to  know  how  do  you  prepare  it  and  use  it.Would  be  happy  if  you  can  share  it  with  us.No  offense  meant   Smile

btw,  I  would  have  appreciated  a  pm  to  me  from  a  responsible  person  like  you  to  correct  my  typo  instead  of  flaring  in  a  public  forum. Will  be  more  careful  with  typos  in  future.Cheers.

 1.  In  general,  please  do  not  play  with  organophosphates.  Most  of  them  are  very  potent  neurotoxins.

 2.  Dimilin  in  particular,  did  you  get  the  bit  about  no  overdose  from  koivet?  Do  keep  in  mind  that  diflubenzuron  (the  active  component  in  dimilin)  is  a  chitin  inhibitor.  Since  chitin  is  what  forms  the  shells  of  many  crustaceans,  you  may  want  to  stay  away  from  the  compound  if  you  have  shrimp  or  crabs  in  your  tank.  There  is  also  some  evidence  that  diflubenzuron,  by  itself  or  in  conjunction  with  other  compounds,  is  carcinogenic.
