Provided  your  filtration  is  adequate  (No  ammonia,  nitrites.  Low  nitrates)  there  will  be  no  negative  effect.

Discus  alongwith  Angels  is  not  advisible  ,  always  create  problems  to  Discus  .  Why  to  invite  problem  .  Best  to  keep  only  Discus  in  seperate  tank  with  bare  bottom  .

For  Discus  Tank  ,  WC  is  directly  related  to  below  ,

 1)  Density  of  fish  in  tank  -  No  of  Discus  in  tank  .
 2)  Type  of  feed  ,  Animal  hearts  (  BH  ,  PH  ,  GH  )  ,  live  feed  ,  dry  feed  tc  .
 3)  Frequency  of  feed  -  No  of  feed  per  day
 4)  Filteration  system  .
 5)  Water  temp  ,  Ph  etc  .

I  have  25  Tanks  ,  feeds  BH  ,  and  do  daily  20%WC  for  breeding  Tanks  ,  60%-  75%WC  for   babies  &  25%  WC  for  adults  .  I  enjoy  doing  WC  .  To  succed  in  discus  one  should  fall  in  love  with  Discus  .

The  water  change  is  related  to  their  Growth,  so  if  you   do  get  large  Discus  you  can  get  away  with  lesser  WC  provided  you  keep  all  other   things  constant  ph  and  Nitrate/Ammonia  etc  etc  for  the  fish.
For  smaller  discus  you  should  do  WC  as  often  as  possible...

 Nanu  ,

Its  not  only   the  size  of  the  fish  ,  its  also  the  density  of  fish  .

Say  in  tank  no  1  of  size  48  x  18  x18  you  have  kept  20  discus  of  say  6  inch  size  and  in  tank  no  2  of  same  size  you  have  kept  15  discus  of  2  inch  size  you  still  need  to  do  bigger  WC  for  tank  no  1  .  The  reason  the  average  water  volume  per  fish  .  The  Ammonia  built  up  in  tank  no  1  will  be  more  hence  more  WC  .  Basic  is  to  minimise  the  Ammonia  level  in  tank  .

Again  type  of  feed  &  no  of  feed  also  needs  to  be  taken  in  to  consideration  while  doing  WC  .

Plus  it  would  also  mitigate  the  effect  of  the  hormones  the  largest  fish  would  emit  to  inhibit  the  growth  of  other  small  fish

Quite  obvious,  that  the  ammonia  would  rise  faster  when  the  density  is  higher..  if  you  read  the  statement  completely  I  said  provided  you  keep  that  Ammonia  levels  in  check...

What  I  was  trying  to  say  is  that  with  larger  fish  the  the  growth  rate  is  lesser  than  with  a  smaller  fish  and  hence  the  effect  of  what  Hyath  said  would  be  more  on  the  smaller  fish..."Growth  Inhibiting  Harmone"  that  ristricts  the  growth  of  other  smaller  discus  around  in  the  same  water...

 Shiva,

I  have  4  discus  (4-5  inch  in  size)  in  a  48  X  21  X  21  inch  tank  (about  90  gallons).  I  feed  beef  heart  twice  a  day  and  tetra  bits  once  a  day.

What  kind  of  a  water  change  regime  would  you  recommend?

 thanks

The  rate  of  WC  would  definitely  depend  upon  what  you  are  feeding  the  fish.  If  you  feed  beef  heart  then  you  will  have  to  change  water  pretty  regularly.  If  you're  looking  to  grow  juvis  then  it  would  be  ideally  something  like  40%  daily,  though  i  believe  75%  3  times  a  week  would  be  sufficient.

 @Anandaqu
Please  post  your  question  in  a  new  thread.  A  'no  hijacking'  policy  is  a  good  one!

Sorry  to  go  a  bit  off  on  this  topic  but  i  read  Anand's  post  and  would  like  to  comment  on  it...
Keeping  just  4  discus  in  such  a  large  tank  is  not  advisable...you  should  get  at  least  another  4...discus  feel  very  secure  in  groups  in  fact  one  of  the  few  cichlids  that  believe  in  more  the  merrier  theory.
Also  in  such  a  large  tank  4  discus  will  stake  out  territory  which  would  result  in  all  the  fish  constantly  fighting  against  each  other..
 Just  my  two  cents

4  discus  of  this  size  is  too  little  in  this  size  tank  ,  you  can  still  add  4  to  5  discus  of  this  same  size  .

3  times  feed  is  good  for  this  size  ,  try  to  keep  good  gap  between  each  feed  .  BH  &  Tetra  good  feed  combination  .   Don't  overfeed  .  whatever  you  feed  your  discus  should  consume   within  20  minutes  ,  best  if  they  finished  it  in  10  minutes  .

With  4  fishes  in  the  above  volume  of  water  ,  10  %   daily  WC  is  good  ,  if  you  keep  8  fishes  in  this  tank  ,  I  would  prefer  20%  daily  WC  .
Large  &  Regular  WC  for  Discus  is  always  good  .

 HI  guys:

Why  not  all  of  you  team  up  and  do  a  write  up  on  Discus  care  with  good  photographs??  That  would  be  a  good  treasure  for  people  who  are  new  to  discus  Keeping.  Just  a  suggestion.

 Hi

The  intention  is  not  to  hijack  this  thread.  Since  the  these  is  water  change,  I  thought  the  ansers  to  my  question  would  also  enrich  others  who  read  this  thread.  And  since  so  many  have  responded  to  my  question,  please  give  me  the  liberty  to  continue...

toomany  fish  --  u  r  right.  the  discus  are  fighting  constantly.  But  I  am  in  the  process  of  adding  two  more.

Discusolic  -  my  discus  are  always  hungry.  the  finish  the  BH   in  5  minutes  and  beg  for  more!

I  currently  do  20%  WC  twice  a  week.

 thanks  all
