 Hi  everyone,

I  have  just  received  confirmation  from  an  eminent  person  that  he  is  willing  to  give  a  talk  on  Marine  Aquariums.  Since  this  aspect  of  the  Hobby  is  in  it's  right  infancy  amongst  hobbyists  in  India,  the  talk  will  cover  the  basics  of  setting  up  a  Marine  Aquarium,  the  equipments  and  why  there  of.

As  there  are  a  number  of  Aquarists  who  are  past  the  basics  stage,  I  would  like  suggestions  on  what  other  specialised  aspects  of  the  Marine  Aquarium  will  need  to  be  covered  in  the  talk.

Due  to  limitations  of  time,  there  cannot  be  a  concentration  on  any  one  topic,  but  the  talk  will  be  a  general  over  view  of  the  livestock,  feeding,  care,  setup,  maintenance,  equipment  and  other  features  necessary  for  a  successful  Marine  setup.

I  feel  the  Marine  Aquariums  facett  of  the  hobby  is  not  very  popular  in  India  more  because  of  the  apprehensions  that  hobbyists  have  regarding  this  field  of  the  hobby  than  anything  else.  I  would  like  this  to  be  set  at  rest.

Your  suggestions  are  awaited.  Please  post  them  here  in  this  thread  so  that  I  can  compile  it  and  ask  the  speaker  to  include  them  in  his  speech.

No  questions  here  please!  You  can  ask  them  at  Aquatika  2005  directly!

 Madan,

one  good  topic  with  respect  to  marine  hobby  is  growing  macro  algae.  It  will  be  good  if  our  speaker  throws  some  light  on  this.

Correct.  Marine  aquarium,  a  low  cost  approach  will  be  interesting.

Filtration:  something  comparative,  along  the  lines  of  sumps  vs  Berlin  reefs  vs  algal  scrubbers,  in  terms  of  cost,  efficacy,  ease  of  operation.

Very Happy    Very Happy    Very Happy    Very Happy  good  good  news!

I  assume  the  speaker  is  indian(which  is  very  good,as  only  an  indian  can  give  suggestions  applicable  locally)...so  that  would  be  the  important  issue-talk  about  livestock/systems/ideas  that  will  work  locally(indian  context)

Also  kindly  clear  up  legal  issues  on  keeping  corals, liverock, livestock.

collection  trips  for  marine  tanks  would  be  great  fun.Any  suggestions.(think  of  all  the  scuba  diving  fun  that  comes  along)

You'll  have  wait  for  the  answer  until  we  announce  the  programme.
As  of  now  I  have  asked  for  suggestions  for  this  particular  speaker.

The  speaker  is  Indian  and  has  vast  experience  setting  up  Marine  Aquaria.

 Hi  Madan,

I  would  think  that  setting  up,  general  care  etc.  of  a  Marine  aquarium  is  absolutely  important  for  every  individual  to  learn  about  from  our  eminent  speaker.

I  as  a  Marine  aquarium  owner  feel  misguided  by  certain  local  experts  on  matters  pertaining  to  "Water  Quality  Management"  on  a  long  term  sustainable  way.  Issues  like  Kalkwasser,  calcium  additives,  Use  of  calcium  reactors  or  its  cheaper  versions/alternatives,  trace  elements  supplements,  Ozone  useage  and  UV  filtration  usage,  ,  water  changes  and  its  frequency  and  parameters,  testing  methods  for  various  parameters  governing  water  quality  like  hardness,  ph,  salinity,  density,  Redox  Potential,  calcium  levels,  hardness  and  levels  of  other  wastes,  by  products  of  bilogical  activity  and  contaminants.    A  more  "hands  on  experience"  sharing  by  an  indian  expert  would  be  great.  I  hope  the  lecture  will  be  published  on  the  website  for  non-Bangaloreans  to  learn  from?

Another  aspect  is  to  share  the  speakers  experience  in  keeping  and  raring  of  specific  marine  species,  and  a  general  overview  of  the  normal  aquarium  /  captive  life  expectancy  of  marine  fishes  based  on  the  speakers  own  experience.

Equally  important  would  be  marine  diseases  and  how  the  speaker  has  managed  controling  and  curing  such  diseases.  Even  generic  names  of  formulations  that  can  be  applied  to  marine  specimen  along  with  some  idea  on  dosage  calculation  would  be  of  great  help.

Other  interesting  subjects  have  already  been  mentioned  by  our  fellow  aquarists  above.

 Regards,
 Simba!

Right  Simba,  I'll  pass  on  your  suggestions  along  with  the  others.

As  for  publishing  the  talk  on  the  IAH,  I  am  not  too  sure  of  that.  We  will  try  and  do  our  best.  Generally  these  presentations  rely  a  lot  on  MS  Powerpoint,  and  as  of  now  the  IAH  software  does  not  accept  the  same.  We'll  see  what  best  we  can  do,  as  we  do  not  want  to  deprive  anyone  not  attending  of  knowledge.  No  promises  right  now.

With  the  talk  about  accessories,  their  approx  budget  reqd  could  also  be  spoken  about  which  would  help  beginners.    Also  the  compatibility  of  marine  fishes  with  each  other  and  the  symbiosis  reqd.
