 Dear  Friends,
I  have  a  spare  tank  with  dimentions  (in  Inches)   20L  X  10W  X  15H.  Can  this  tank  be  used  for  a  Marine  setup.

I  am  planning  to  have  only  one  anemone  and  a  pair  of  clown  fish.  can  I  go  ahead.

also  let  me  know  what  are  the  equipments  I  need  to  kick  start  an  marrine  aquarium.

 Thanks.
 Aquaboy.

 Hi  Aquaboy,

The  tank  dimensions  are  extremely  small  for  a  marine  tank.  It  is  very  difficult  to  maintain  such  a  tank  since  the  water  evaporation  will  play  havoc  with  your  salinity..

Also  anemones  should  only  be  kept  in  a  mature  tank  (i.e.  a  tank  running  for  atleast  a  year.)

I  have  tried  my  hand  at  maintaining  a  small  tank  and  believe  me  its  very  very  difficult.  It  requires  daily  top-offs  to  combat  the  evaporation  and  very  close  monitoring.

 Thanks  Pree,
But  I  have  seen  15G  nano  reefs  in  IAH  running  successfully.  if  daily  care  is  the  only  concern  I  can  handle  that.  I  love  my  hobby.  and  no  problems  in  performing  the  daily  top  ups.

 thanks

An  anemone  would  be  really  risky  inhabitant   in  a  tank  that  size.  I  don't  think  any  nano  reef  on  IAH  has  an  anemone  in  it.
I  would  suggest  going  for  some  hardy  softies  instead,  if  you  can  get  them.

Also  your  location  and  your  maximum  temp  will  be  critical  in  your  ability  to  keep  a  nano  reef  tank,  so  you  might  want  to  update  your's  in  your  profile.

For  that  size  of  tank  though,  I  would  not  put  in  more  than  one  fish.

 Dear  Simhan,
Thanks  for  your  response.  I  have  updated  my  profile.  (I  live  in  Chennai).  If  I  can't  keep  an  Anemone  in  that  then  can  I  have  any  fishe  which  can  live  there  with  some  live  rocks.

 thanks
 Aquaboy.

How  about  a  damsel  or  a  clown???  If  you  have  not  bought  the  tank  already  I  suggest  you  go  for  the  biggest  tank  possible  for  your  budget.

 Hi  Illango,
Can  I  have  a  clown  without  an  Anemone,  I  thought  that  we  cannot  have  a  clown  without  a  host  anemone.

 Kindly  clarify

Clown  can  be  without  an  anemone,  there  is  no  guaranty  that  the  clown  will  host  in  the  anemone  that  you  provide  too!!!  (my  clowns  didn't  like  the  BTA,  LTA  but  settled  for  a  carpet  Smile  )  Of  course  it  will  be  nice  to  have  a  clown  hosted  in  an  anemone  but  you  may  have  to  get  a  larger  tank  and  wait  for  a  year  or  two  for  your  marine  experience  and  your  marine  tank  to  mature.

 Take  care  and  have  fun.

No  issues  keeping  clowns  without  an  anemone.
For  a  tank  that  size,  I  would  stick  to  perculas  and  keep  it  to  a  maximum  of  one  clown.
If  you  want  an  additional  fish,  look  into  blennies  or  gobies.  Just  one.

LR  is  always  a  good  addition  but  its  rather  had  to  source  atm.

 Hi  All,

Wont  it  be  possible  for  Aquaboy  to  have  sand  bed  with  live  rock  setup(  if  he  could  source).  And  once  the  tank  matures  he  could  have  few  nice  lookink  inverts.  Like  cleaner  shrimps,  smaller  variety  of  gobies.  Would  this  be  possible?

 Regards,
 Surya

 Aquaboy,

Do  not  get  a  Anemone  now.  Anemones  need  reef  conditions  to  thrive..  i.e  prestine  water  conditions,  specialised  lighting  and  constant  parameters.

You  can  have  a  awesome  tank  with  lost  of  zoanthids  and  a  couple  of  fishes.
In  the  future  you  add  some  inverts  and  other  soft  corals.

the  bigger  the  size  of  the  tank, any  disturbance  in  the  water  parameters  will  be  adjusted  .but  if  the  tank  is  small  it  would  wreck  havoc.anemones  are  very  fragile.try  to  get  a  big  tank  and  let  your  head  rule  you  as  far  as  marine  is  concerned.you  need  to  spend  some  amount  of  money  if  you  want  a  marine  tank!  Thumb Up

 Thanks  a  lot  Guys,
For  time  being  I  don't  have  an  option  to  go  for  a  bigger  tank  (I  already  have  two  other  tanks  (  3  footer  with  Oscar  and  a  1feet  Cube  with  guppies).  hence  will  settele  for  a  marine  tank  with  zoanthids  and  a  couple  of  clowns.

I  also  want  to  know  the  basic  equipments  I  require  to  kick  start  a  Marine  aquarium.  for  the  Tank  dimensions  specified.  taking  into  consideration  the  habitants  and  my  geographical  location  (chennai,  India  where  the  temperature  varies  between  38C  high  to  20C  Low  ).

 Thanks
 Aquaboy.

I  Second  you  Suraj.  You  came  up  with  nice  solutions.

I  have  a  request  to  all  the  Marine  Masters.  We  have  nice  beginners  guide   to  kick  start  a  planted  tank  created  by  Trevor  Sir.  But  whenever  I  am  thinking  about  marine,  I  can  feel  the  absense  of  a  good  kick  satrt  document  here.  Can  any  of  experts  please  comeup  with  a  detailed  thread  which  can  guide  a  beginner  into  a  marine  setup  step  by  step.  This  will  be  a  great  help  for  all.
