 Hi  All,
Yesterday  night  there  was  a  power  cut  off  at  my  place  around  12:30  in  the  night  ,

I  had  my  BHM  in  the  freezer  without  refrigeration  for  around  8.5  hrs,  around  9  am  in  the  morning   i  moved  it  to  my  friends  fridge.
The  BHM  jar  was  relatively  cold  and  it  wasn't  smelling  bad.  will  it  be  edible  for  furthur  use?

Don't  use  this  BHM  for  more  than  3-4  days,  max  a  week...  it  will  not  be  in  a  good  state.

If  it  was  still  frozen  (not  cold,  frozen)  it  will  be  fine.  I've  had  shrimp  mix  in  my  freezer  survive  several  power  outages.

Before  putting  back  to  your  friends  fridge  if  the  cubes  were  little  soft  (  defroze  )  then  no  problem  you  can  use  them  again  ,  but  if  you  find  that  they  were  in  liquid  form  (  cubes  alongwith  liquid  )  then  better  not  to  use  them  .

If  your  discus  is  eating  at  first  attempt  continue  feeding  them  with  this  feed  ,  but  if  they  are  refusing  it  and  consuming  after  long  time  then  better  don't  take  chance  ,  throw  it  .  Sometimes  discus  refuse  the  spoiled  food  .  Observe  you  discus  while  feeding  .

 Thanks
 Shiva

This  happened  to  me  once  and  my  FlowerHorn  just  spat  all  the  BHM  out.  This  from  a  fish  that  doesn't  let  food  touch  the  water  surface  before  gobbling  it  all  up..  Tread  carefully!   Smile

I  would  consider  frozen  minced  meat  to  unusable  once  thawed.  The  only  time  it  should  be  thawed  is  just  before  feeding,  be  it  for  Fish  or  Human.   Smile

Thawing  can  also  happen  when  there  is  extended  power  outage,  which  has  gone  unnoticed.  The  indicators  would  be  crystallization  of  the  oozed  water  on  the  outer  wall  of  the  Meat  during  the  process,  generally  the  base  &  the  sides.

While  storing  -  make  sure  that  there  is  least  amount  of  air  trapped  in  the  container.  More  the  air  content  greater  is  the  scope  for  dehydration  &  ice  formation  on  it.  To  overcome  this  it’s  best  to  use  small  zip-lock  bags  sufficient  to  hold  a  week’s  supply.  Lesser  the  quantity  in  each  pack,  the  better  you  can  manage  the  thawing  issues.  Zip-locking  only  the  amount  required  per  feed  is  ideal.

Small  Zip  lock  bags  are  easily  available.  To  make  sure  they  are  airtight  opt  for  ones  with  good  sealing  on  the  edges;  these  are  marginally  expensive.

However,  if  thawing  never  happens  while  being  stored.  I  used  to  stock  for  a  months  supply.

 HTH  Smile

Thanks  Pree,  Shiva,  Rahul,Deepak  for  valuable  inputs.

The  BHM  was  not  frozen  but  was  little  soft  and  smelled  ok  ,  i'll  follow  litmus  test  suggested  by  Shiva   "If  your  discus  is  eating  at  first  attempt  continue  feeding  them  with  this  feed".
Thanks  Deepak  for  your  great  suggestion  of  using  airtight  zip  bag  will  definitly  try  that.

BTW  can  you   guys  suggest  good  sources  of  prepared  BHM  around  Mumbai?  If  they  have  GHM  or  PHM  that  would  be  better...

I  am  taking  off  from  the  office  now  and  would  get  the  BHM  jar  back.  I  just  purchased  Refridgerator  a  week  back  hope  it  was  effective  even  after  the  power  cut     Very Happy

In  summer  if  you  have  problem  of  frequent  power  shut  down  ,  it  is  advisible  to  store  BH  in  small  qty   in  small  size   plastic  bags  and  use  one  by  one  .

During  summer  I  prepare  BH  for  only  one  week  consumption  .  Discus  likes  freshly  prepared  BH  .

 Thanks
 Shiva
