Epoch..... Welcome to IAH. Update your profile with Location. What fishes you are looking for? Getting good fishes in a good rate is impossible in Delhi and NCR. I saw a LFS in RG area couple of days before, selling Mollies and genetically deformed colored Danios. Let me know what kind of fishes you are looking for. May be I can help you out.
P.S: I am not a fish dealer/LFS. |

Hey Tirtha,
Thanks for your reply.
I am a newbie and don't know much about which fishes to start with.
Searched on net and found that I should start with hard species like shark, tetras, zebra etc.
I am not sure whether all these are available in India.
I have a 75L tank. Which ones do you suggest I should go for. Should I plant some live plants also? Most of the websites say we should, but some say that plants are hard to maintain.
regards,
Epoch |

Epoch, as you ar a beginner, start with Molly, Guppy, Platy and Swordtails as of now. Adding plants are always better but as of now stay away from live plants. Share your tank dimension, substrate as well as the Filteration system. So called Freshwater Sharks are not for small tank. Then need a big tank to stay happy. |

The tank is in trapezium shape, 3ft in front and 1 ft at the back. The tank capacity is 75 L. It is lit by a CFL light.
I am yet to put any fishes in it. I want to do some research b4 I put in fishes.
Please suggest the fishes and live plants (whether I should put these or not)
regards,
Epoch |

The height of the tank is 18inches. The hood is in place. Using a CFL to light the aquarium (not sure about the wattage of the CFL).
The filter is 150 lph filter.
For the aquarium bed, I am using grey sand ( i have cleaned it thoroughly and the water in the aquarium is clear). Added few white stones at to make the aquarium look better (the ones found at the river bed).
Planning to buy toys too to give fishes place to hide and play... |

That means You are using a Sponge Internal Power filter. According to me you need another one in your tank. 150ltr is not enough for your tank. You should have such a flowrate where the total volumn of water can be filtered 3-4 times in an hour. And use double sponge in the filters. It will increase the bacteria colony and will provide a better filteration.
And while adding fishes, make sure you are not adding a huge bioload at a time. Slowly add fishes. To start with, add 5 guppies in the tank, wait for 3 weeks. Keep changing 50% water every week. By this time the tank got cycled. Then add some more fishes. wait for an week and then add some more. But do not add more than 20 small fishes in the tank. |

Thanks for the help Tirtha.
I am not planning to keep more than 10 fishes. Let them play freely in the tank.
If the water is getting filtered 3-4 times in an hour, will it not create a strong water current in the aquarium?
Also, some LFS say that we should change the entire water in 2 months (or as you said change 50% of water after every week), will that not remove the benificial bacteria from the aquarium? |

There is no relation between banificial Bacteria and weekly water change. You will get Bacteria Colony in Filter media and on substrate. Weekly water change will help you maintain water quality as well as your fish health as it will remove extra ammonia and nitrite if it is present in water column. It's advisable to wash the filter sponge once in 2 weeks using Tank water only while WC. Never ever compare your home aquarium with Delhi LFS tanks. They are dumping the fishes for very short time just for business porpuse but you are keeping fishes as your pet, so your goal will be to provide a proper ealthy home to your fishes.
I will wait for other membres also to see their choice on fishes for your tank. |
