 Guys,

As  I  had  warned  in  one  of  my  previous  threads  today,  that  I  do  not  have  much  of  work  to  do  today,  hence  have  designed  a  hood  for  a  planted  tank.

Pls  have  a  look  and  post  your  comments,  criticism  and  suggestions.

I  would  like  to  know,  how  can  I  give  a  good  finish  to  the  hood?  If  I  want  to  have  smooth  ends  like  molded  finish,  can  that  be  done?
Using  only  nails  and  adhesive  will  give  me  abrupt  and  course  finish,  can  I  use  anything  like  putty  to  smoothen  the  rough  ends?  let  me  know  about  the  ways  I  can  improve  the  aesthetics  of  the  hood.

Also,  I  would  like  to  know  where  can  I  find  good  reflectors  for  the  tubes?

 Thanks  in  tons,  in  advance.

Change  the  position  of  the  fans.  Put  them  in  both  side  so  the  air  can  enter  from  one  side  and  get  passed  from  another  end.  If  you  put  the  fans  top  of  the  hood,  the  incoming  air  will  force  the  hot  inside  air  to  hit  the  water  surface  all  th  time.  And  MH  and  a  Covered  tank  wont  go  well.  Because  of  the  hitting  problem.

That  is  how  they  are  Tirtha.

Cold  air  goes  in  from  one  side  and  hot  air  comes  out  from  the  opposite  side.

You  can  use  12  mm  (your  ply  thickess)  decorated  wood  beading  (half  round  for  edges)  and  (quarter  round  for  the  angles)
The  beading  can  be  fit  to  the  ply  edges  with  finish  nails.
All  you  have  to  do  is  stain  the  ply  or  paint  it.

 sequence  for  paint  is
sand  (120  grit),  fill  with  wood  putty/wax,  sand  (120  grit),  primer,  sand  (180  grit),  prime,  paint,  paint
use  white  paint  for  the  inside  of  the  hood  for  light  reflection

 sequence  for  ply  stain  is
sand  (120  grit),  fill  with  wood  putty/wax,  sand  (180  grit),  apply  stain,  dry  and  apply  stain

 Hmmm..

If  I  keep  3  fans  blowing  air  in  and  3  fans  blowing  air  out  in  the  sides,  and  the  distance  of  the  MH  from  the  water  level  at  9  inches,  will  it  be  ok  for  a  planted  tank?

 Tank  dimension,  3x2(H)x1.5.

I  want  to  grow  moss  and  ferns  in  this  tank.  I  have  a  high  powered  Boyu  internal  filter  working  on  24/7.

Will  replacing  the  MH  with  PLL  be  a  better  option,  in  that  case  I  can  go  for  6,  36  watt  PLL  fittings.

Now,  will  the  weight  of  the  hood  be  too  much  for  the  tank?  The  tank  is  made  with  8mm  float  glass  with  supports  in  the  bottom  and  top.  I  am  having  a  wild  guess  that  the  total  weight  of  the  hood  after  setting  up  the  lights  and  the  plants  will  be  some  where  near  to  35  Kgs.

 Kindly  share  your  views.

 Hey  Vinay,

I  do  not  get  you  when  you  say  that  I  have  been  a  ear  round  here.  Do  you  mean  'year'?  Well,  if  so,  it  is  definitely  nice  to  hear  that  you  have  been  following  me  since  an  year.
But  seems  like  I  caught  you  napping  dude.

I  had  posted  lot  of  my  tank  pics  previously,  you  would  have  surely  noticed  them  if  you  would  have  come  out  of  your  stupor.

I  hope  you  will  be  adding  value  to  posts  unlike  the  current  example  by  putting  in  some  thing  useful  that  the  other  hobbiests  can  benefit  from.

Look  forward  to  see  some  sensible  posts  from  you  dude.

 Cheers,

 Dev.

Instead  of  giving  it  a  cuboid  (box  like)  look.  Try  going  for  a  pyramidical  look  with  flat  top.  It'll  look  better.

 Regards

 Saurabh

 Debarghya,
What  I  meant  that  the  bottom  portion  of  your  hood  remaind  slightly  bigger  than  3  x  1.5  but  the  top  portion  could  be  3  x  1  or  2.5  x  1  .
Moreover  you  can  have  hinges  on  the  front  portion  to  avoid  lifting  the  hood  every  now  and  then  for  feeding  etc.
Lifting  the  hood  every  time  disturbs  wiring  which  might  result  in  short  circuit.
For  reflectors  glue  simple  kitchen  aluminium  foils  on  the  inner  side.  Remeber  the  wires  are  completely  insulated!

you  can  also  paint  the  inside  of  the   hood  white  for  reflection.  works  equally  good  though  it  requires  a  little  more  effort  than  foil.
if  the  hood  is  for  a  planted  tank  then  it  would  be  better  if  there  was  some  space  between  the  tank  and  the  hood.  at  least  6".  heating  is  one  problem  and  some  plants  have  leaves  that  grow  outside  water  also.  touching  the  lights  is  a  big  no-no
by  the  way  is  MH  required  for  a  planted  tank?  just  curious...  Confused  i  think  T5  HO  will  be  better.  saves  on  weight  too.

Good  suggestions,  Saurabh.  I  had  the  plan  to  hinge  one  side  in  my  mind  other  wise  it  become  very  difficult  to  feed  and  clean.

Kunal,  my  only  concern  is  penetration  of  light  to  2  ft  under  water.  I  think  only  MH  is  able  to  do  that.

Can  the  tank  bear  the  weight?
