Alum is not recommended for fish tanks! For complete peace of mind invest in an RO filter. For less expensive options aerate the water for 24 hours at tepid temperature (hint: use a cheap aquarium heater without the thermostat in a bucket aerated by an airstone) then let it cool down to room temp and finally supplement with a good water conditioner before adding to tank.
Some "filter plants" in the tank (anacharis/elodea, hydrilla, cabomba) make water changes less stressful to the fish.
Depending on your fish, you may consider adding some blackwater tonic.
