Hi
is there is a minimum size of tank or ratio of Fish size : tank size that should be met to allow schooling behavior of fish?
I was thinking of cardinals in a 3 feet tank, but information on other species may also be helpful |

Dear Unni
For scooling fish, ideal set up should be at the ratio of 1 : 10( Volume )
As fer as fish are concern besides cardinal you can keep Rasboras of differnt spcs., mountain menows and small tetras of your choice.

Unni,
50 Gallons = roughly 220 Litres of water, You can Keep around 15 Cardinals.... , but cardinals are not a very good schooling fish, it tends to be shy or hide most of the time or if someone goes near to the Tank, i would suggest 15 Harlequin Rasboras or Rummy Nose. they are the best..

When I inquired about availability of Rasboras the LFS guy looked at me blankly and then asked me to spell it for him
To be fair he took down the name in writing and promised to check availability with his supplier from Calcutta |

There is NO ratio of schooling fish to water volume!
This topic has been discussed in detail on this forum before. Fish will school if they feel threatened. Fish that feel secure will disperse to forage. |

Hi Unni,
I have seen few H.Rasbaro's and black phantoms at Karthiks place yesterday. You could also check with him. His no:9886500878
And also the tank size would entirely depend on the variety of fish and no:'s you want to keep. I had 8 dario dario in a 1'*9"*8" tank.

I dont think schooling depends on the size of the tank, i have 11 Cardinals, 12 Harlequins & 6 Black Phantoms in my 36*18*18 heavily planted tank and they are just loving it!!! |

Rahul is bang on.
Schooling is a defensive mechanism, fish will school when they are frightened, as soon as they feel safe the school will disperse.
Fish will school in a small tank if they feel threatned. |

Hi Unni,
36*12*12 can be a good size tank for most of the small and medium size fishes.
Its much easy to maintain.
Stocking depend on the size and type of fish you keep.
Small to medium size barbs & tetras with medium planted will be good sight to watch.

Unni,
IME cardinal tetras are not great schoolers, but stunning to look at.
For tight schooling fish, rasboras have always lived upto my expectation.
If you are looking for rasboras, Suraj has them in stock, and you can call him on 09843338888.

@ Rahul, @Sandeep
Thanks for the answer. It was this article on the net that prompted question. That seems to suggest that you need a large tank for schooling.
@ Rahul
I had searched through the forums before posting that question. I will search more diligently next time that i post a question.
@ nytyn @ Iqbal @ Seetharam @surya @ Raghu
Thank you for the replies. I have just ordered my tank. So it will be some time before its setup and cycled. Thanks for all the suggestions.
I think I will setup the tank and fishes and leave it for the fish to decide whether they want to school or not |

I agree with rahul,
In my tanks all the so called schooling fishes (Cardinals, Rummy etc) disperse. They school together only during my weekly water change or when I am maintaining my plants.
So in fact if your fishes are schooling in your aquarium then something is not alright.
e.g: If you have a open tank or a tank with less plant cover then Cardinals will school in the presence of large Angels.
Regards,
Nayak. |
