 Hi  All

I  have  been  bitten  by  the  invertebrate  bug  for  sometime  now,  started  off  with  Red  Cherry  Shrimps  and  wanted  to  start  keeping  some  exotic  and  beautiful  varieties  of  Inverts  like  the  Crystal  Red  Shrimps  etc.  Was  never  into  cray  fish  BUT  THEN  ....  there  was  the  post  by  Trevor  .  I  was  captivated  by  the  pictures  posted  by  Trevor  of  these  litttle  guys  and  just  wanted  some  myself.  So  after  some  reading  up  and  research  on  these  guys  over  the  net  decided  to  take  the  jump.  This  thread  is  my  attempt  to  document  how  to  keep  and  care  for  these  cute  fellas

Firstly  had  to  have  a  established  tank  for  these  guys,  so  i  used  one  of  my  ADA  Planted  Cubes.

 Tank  Specifications:

Tank  Size:    18x15x15  Filter:  600  L/H  HOB  Lighting:  18  Watts  PLL  Substrate:  ADA  Amazonia  II  Hardscape:  Rocks  and  lots  of  broken  pots  CO2:  Nill  Dosing:  ADA  Brighty  K  and  ADA  Green  Brighty  Step  1  -  Occasionally  Plants:  marsilea  crenata  Inhabitants:  6  Mexican  Dwarf  Orange  Crayfish  (Cambarellus  patzcuarensis)

 Tank  Water  Parameters:

 pH:  7.2  kH:  6  Temp:  28  Degrees

Below  is  the  picture  of  the  tank

These  guys  dont  harm  the  plants.  But  sometimes  when  they  are  mvoing  on  the  marsilea  carpet,  they  tend  to  use  their  claws  to  grab  on  and  in  the  process  do  uproot  the  plants  a  little  bit,  but  nothing  disastrous.  They  are  currently  being  raised  on  Hikari  Algae  Wafers  which  they  accept  readily.  Below  is  a  close  up  of  one  of  the  females

The  breeding  dance   Cheering  ,  this  started  within  2  days  of  them  being  introduced  into  the  tank.

AND  ......  Ahem  !!!  Well  what  can  i  say  ....  i  caught  them  in  the  act   Chuckle

I  dont  know  if  the  whole  act  was  completed,  as  the  intruder  (Me)  switched  on  the  lights  to  get  a  good  picture,  about  30  seconds  after  i  took  the  picture  they  broke  off.  The  female  has  not  yet  shown  any  signs  of  carrying  any  eggs   Sad

Thats  about  it  for  now  ...  will  look  at  constantly  updating  this  thread  as  and  when  something  interesting  happens

Nice  Setup  and  superb  species.  Give  them  good  care.  Want  to  see  them  breeding.  :)

BTW...  one  off  topic  question.  How  you  guys  are  differentiating  among  Minuta,  Hirsuta  and  crenata??  They  all  are  looking  identical  to  me.   Sad

Yep  these  are  the  guys,  absolutely  adorable,  the  pictures  do  no  justice  to  how  they  look  and  behave  in  reality,  i  spend  atleast  an  hour  everyday  watching  and  observing  their  behaviour,  the  funnient  thing  is  everytime  i  go  near  the  tank,  one  or  two  of  them  come  charging  at  me,  as  if  their  going  to  use  all  the  strenght  in  their  1.5  Inch  frame  to  drag  me  into  the  tank  into  one  of  their  caves  and  eat  me  up   ROFL  and  yeah  next  time  ....  ahem  ....  i  will  be  giving  them  the  utmost  privacy   Innocent

Definitely  hoping  they  will  breed,  they  do  look  comfortable  in  the  setup,  lots  of  hiding  places  for  them.

Well  regarding  identification  ,  im  as  confused  as  you  are,  i  got  them  as  crenata  hence  still  refer  to  it  as  the  same,  i  guess  you  can  differentiate  them  well  based  on  their  emmersed  growth.

@  Abhishek  -  Thank  You  for  your  kind  words,  The  Tank  was  initially  a  high  tech  setup,  thats  when  the  Marsilea  Carpet  gre  well,  now  its  just  barely  getting  along,  but  i  dont  want  to  pump  CO2  because  of  these  guys.  Im  still  learning  a  lot  of  things  and  compared  to  some  people  on  this  forum  im  still  a  novice.  You  too  will  learn  and  grow  over  a  period  of  time,  the  important  thing  is  to  keep  learning   Thumb Up

@  Shameek,  Vignesh  and  Diwan  -  Thank  You  for  your  comments.

@  Trevor  -  Thank  You  for  your  comments  and  especially  for  putting  up  the  picture  of  these  guys,  if  it  wasnt  for  your  captivating  photograph  i  would  have  never  realized  how  beautiful  they  were   Smile

@  Abhis  -  Thank  You  for  your  comments.  These  guys  grow  to  a  maximum  of  1.5  Inches.  They  are  supposed  to  be  compatible  with  smaller  varieties  of  Fish  and  Inverts  as  well.  But  in  my  research  on  these  guys  over  the  net,  i  have  found  mixed  inputs.  They  are  know  to  grab  fish  like  Tetra's  when  they  are  asleep  and  motionless,  same  with  Inverts.  From  what  i  have  seen,  they  are  slightly  aggressive  towards  each  other  sometimes.  But  net  net  compared  to  the  larger  varieties  of  Cray's  they  are  very  peaceful  and  go  well  in  a  planted  tank.

@  Nayak  -  Thanks  Danikule,  nothing  compared  to  your  setups  and  exotics  that  you  have  kept  and  bred   Smile

 Thanks  Tigermath

 Update:

Had  not  seen  the  female  which  had  mated  for  2-3  days.  Always  used  to  keep  searching  and  never  found  her.  Curiosity  got  the  best  of  me  today  morning  and  i  proceeded  to  take  out  the  pots  and  rocks  one  by  one.  Half  way  there  and  i  found  her  .......  LOADED  WITH  EGGS  !!!!   Cheering

She  is  too  shy  /  scared  to  come  out  in  the  open,  and  i  have  serious  doubts  if  she  is  feeding  properly  either.  Just  setup  a  1  ft  Cube  with  ADA  Amazonia  II  as  the  base,  Used  60%  water  from  the  old  tank  and  40%  fresh  water.  Had  a  running  small  sponge  filter  which  i  have  now  moved  to  this  tank.  Will  let  the  tank  run  for  24  hrs  and  shift  the  berried  female  to  this  setup  tomorrow,  and  off  course  pictures  will  follow  tomorrow  ...  stay  tuned   Thumb Up

Do  not  move  the  female  in  the  newly  setup  tank.  Even  if  you  have  a  matured  filter.  Let  it  be  there  at  her  old  home.  She  will  start  coing  out  within  2-3  days.  AS  2  will  leach  too  much  nitrate  initially,  so  better  to  keep  her  away.
