When  did  you  do  your  last  water  change?

Fish  get  jumpy,  and  nervous,  and  start  darting  about  only  when  the  water  parameters  are  not  in  their  favor.

 Hi  Nitin

I  had  changed  the  water  the  previous  day  and  as  soon  as  I  noticed  the  change  in  the  behavior  of  the  fish  I  changed  the  water  once  again.  One  more  thing  I  noticed  was  that  the  fish  was  dark  in  color  when  he  was  behaving  in  this  manner.  But  my  doubt  here  is  the  other  discus  were  fine  and  howcome  only  one  discus  was  affected.

 Thanking  you  in  advance
 Suhas

 Hi  Rahul

I  had  left  the  tank  without  fishes  for  about  4  days  with  the  filter  and  thermostat  running.  Is  this  ok  or  did  I  have  to  do  something  else.

 Thanks  in  advance
 Suhas

 Suhas,

check  out  this  article  and  see  where  you  most  likely  went  wrong  with  rgd  to  cycling:

Suhas,  it  takes  4-8  weeks  for  a  tank  to  cycle...  Please  check  out  the  link  Lance  provided  and  elsewhere.  If  possible,  obtain  an  aged  sponge  filter  from  a  fellow  hobbyist  to  seed  your  filter.

 Hi

First  of  all  i  would  like  to  thank  all  of  you  for  providing  a  lot  of  insight  into  a  lot  of  issues  which  i  had  not  given  importance  to.

Another  thing  I  would  like  to  say  overhere  is  that  the  discus  which  died  was  the  biggest  one.  The  others  are  1"  but  they  seem  to  be  ok.

 thanking  you  in  advance
 Suhas

 Mumbai,

right  you  are...  4  days  is  definitely  not  enough  time  for  adequate  bacteria  growth,  coupled  with  the  fact  that  all  the  fish  were  introduced  in  one  go...  i'm  sure  it  took  its  toll....  don't  know  why  the  biggest  one  died  though....

Did  the  fish  stay  in  the  upper  part  of  the  aquarium  and  freak  out  now  and  then  like  mad?    Then  ammonia  toxicity  is  confirmed.    That  too  it  had  happened  in  the  second  week  ammonia  toxicity  becoming  more  eminent.    Its  better  to  cycle  your  tank  atleast  2  months  before  you  add  fish  and  with  discus  an  uncycled  tank  is  nothing  but  a  grave  yard.
