the  fish  due  to  the  size  of  the  eye  and  the  flowering  below  the  eye  looks  to  be  a  ZZ,  but  i  am  not  sure  as  the  fish  is  still  too  small  for  a  perfectly  correct  ID.

now  to  be  frank  with  you,
you  aren't  keeping  it  well,  as  the  fish  is  quite  stressed,  as  the  flowers  are  faded  and  there  are  stress  bands  on  it.

and  at  this  size  you  really  cannot  say  if  its  going  to  be  of  good  quality  or  not,  unless  its  parents  are.

I  happen  to  pick  them  up  (  i  had  two;  one  was  badly  mutilated  by  this  one  and  had  to  be  'put  down')  from  a  local  LFS  and  hence  not  quite  sure  how  the  parents  were.

Regarding  not  keeping  them  well,  I  am  confused  because  i  am  quite  regular  with  water  changes,  feed  them  tetra  bits  food  for  cichlids  ,  GHM  ,  live  fishes  every  fortnight  and  so  am  not  quite  sure  where  I  am  going  wrong  per  se.  Could  you  please  shed  some  light  on  it  .  Have  uploaded  a  few  more  pics  for  you  to  possible  id  the  strain/gender  and  possibly  other  bits.

 Cheers  and  Many  Thanks

FHs  are  supposed  to  be  kept  single  due  to  their  aggressive  nature,  which  you  might  have  understood  by  now

not  a  good  idea  to  be  feeding  live  food,  but  thats  not  the  reason  why  it  must  be  stressed
give  more  details  regarding  its  tank  size

A  friend  of  mine  had  kept  4  together  and  as  mentioned  in  another  post,  i  am  relatively  new  to  this  hobby  so  wasn't  quite  aware  before  hand  that  to  reduce  aggressiveness  you  should  either  keep  them  in  multiples  of  6  or  just  have  a  single  one  in  a  tank.

Tank  is  a  basic  one  footer  (Height  10"  and  Breadth  5")  with  no  substrate.  Its  got  an  artificial  plant  for  company  and  equipped  with  a  sponge  filter.  No  tank  mates  as  pointed  out  earlier.

90%  Water  changes  are  done  every  alternate  day  mainly  because  the  GHM  gets  the  water  dirty  very  very  quickly.
 Hope  that  helps.

ok  let  us  start  from  the  basics  then

FHs  can  be  kept  in  groups,  though  most  of  them  are  gonna  have  torn  fins  or  will  always  be  squabbling  for  territory,  and  will  not  show  their  true  potential  in  terms  of  coloration,  body  shape,  and  character.

the  method  of  keeping  them  in  groups  isn't  always  turn  out  for  the  good,  and  isn't  similar  like  for  other  cichlids  where  you  can  keep  more  than  5  or  6  males  in  a  tank,  its  just  not  "keep  in  groups  and  there  won't  be  aggression"  there  are  other  factors  that  have  to  be  considered,  like  in  case  of  africans,  especially  malawians  we  add  decor  for  the  fish  to  hide  and  run  from  the  aggressor,  but  when  it  comes  to  larger  CA/SA  Cichlids  its  a  bad  idea  to  introduce  decor  as  then  there  might  be  territorial  fights,  so  a  similar  scenario  can  be  considered  with  the  FHs  too,  but  here  there  is  always  a  possibility  that  one  of  'em  might  start  cornering  one  at  a  time  and  finishing  them  off.

We  pay  large  amounts  of  money  for  the  FHs  for  the  features  that  FH  has,  coloration,  body  shape,  and  character,  which  is  lost  when  you  keep  'em  in  groups.

Regarding  filters,  i  have  a  Boyu  1000b  which  is  as  good  as  worthless.  It  does  suck  in  some  dirt  but  immediately  on  turning  off  ,  all  the  dirt  collected  seeps  out  immediately.  Going  off  track  yet  again  but  could  you  suggest  a  good  inexpensive  filter  Very Happy  Thanks

adding  gravel  to  the  tank  would  increase  the  bio  load  capacity  of  your  tank  thus  helping  the  filtration

FHs  don't  need  tall  tanks  at  very  small  size  they  would  need  a  large  foot  print  as  they  kinda  swim  a  lot  and  thus  need  a  lot  of  swimming  space
 go  for  a  24"x12"x12"

Regarding  filters,  i  have  a  Boyu  1000b  which  is  as  good  as  worthless.  It  does  suck  in  some  dirt  but  immediately  on  turning  off  ,  all  the  dirt  collected  seeps  out  immediately.  Going  off  track  yet  again  but  could  you  suggest  a  good  inexpensive  filter  Very Happy  Thanks

adding  gravel  to  the  tank  would  increase  the  bio  load  capacity  of  your  tank  thus  helping  the  filtration

Sweet  as.  Have  already  started  haggling  with  my  local  lfs  for  a  18*12*15  tank  Smile

FHs  don't  need  tall  tanks  at  very  small  size  they  would  need  a  large  foot  print  as  they  kinda  swim  a  lot  and  thus  need  a  lot  of  swimming  space
 go  for  a  24"x12"x12"

Affirmative.  Thanks  for  all  your  valuable  output/suggestions.  Appreciate  it  Smile
