 Hey  guys,

I  have  been  toying  with  the  idea  of  buying  a  DSLR  for  sometime.......I  am  not  a  technical  guy  so  it  would  be  like  rocket  science  for  me  to  have  a  pro  level  DSLR  so  i  am  looking  for  a  entry  level  (cheap  and  easy  to  use)  camera...

On  talking  to  my  wife  about  this  she  suggested  me  i  buy  a  used  camera  off  of  craiglist  and  use  it  for  a  while  before  buying  a  new  one....

There  are  hundreds  of  used  camera  on  sale  but  i  just  dont  know  which  one  to  buy.......my  budget  is  around  $100-$200

Need  suggestions  so  i  can  search  and  find  that  ONE  camera  that  would  suit  me.....  Smile

I  would  suggest  you  to  look  at  an  entry  level  new  camera  since  the  used  ones  may  not  have  much  life  left  in  them.  This  is  because  of  the  limited  age  of  the  CCD  in  them.

A  Nikon  D3000  should  be  a  good  place  to  start  and  it  won't  burn  a  hole  in  your  pocket,  the  experts  should  be  able  to  throw  in  more  suggestions
 Cheers

I  use  the  Nikon  D3000.  Its  pretty  good.  Like  wise  you  could  consider  the  similar  Canon  1000D.

The  D3100  is  just  out.  So  look  for  a  used  D3000.  Will  surely  be  very  affordable,  relatively.  The  D3000  is  fairly  new,  and  I  guess  wouldnt  be  very  battered  by  now.

Even  the  D5000  resale  prices  are  pretty  decent  right  now.

However  if  I  were  you,  I  would  buy  a  new  D3100.

@  Sriram,  by  the  way  what  is  "limited  age  of  CCD"  ,  google  gave  me  all  scientific  jargons  which  i  could  not  make  head  or  tail  out  of.......

Your  budget  is  tooooo  low  for  any  slr.  Canon  1000d  is  cheapest  slr,  even  that  is  much  higher  than  your  budget[cheap  with  quality]  Also  you  cannot  afford  the  investment  for  lenses  and  other  things  even  if  yo  buy  the  camera.

There  are  many  semi-slrs   [Digital  cameras  with  fixed  lens,  but  great  zoom  cmos  sensor  and  good  picture  quality]

I  will  suggest  you  nikon  p100  or  l110  and  canon  20is  do  check  them,  also  some  of  the  lumix  models  are  good.

CCD  sensors  are  considered  to  be  outdated  now,  instead  cmos  are  widely  used,  of  course  cmos  is  far  better.  That  is  what  the  other  guy  meant  I  think.
About  the  unboxed  thing-  That  is  not  cheap  for  unboxed.  I  can  get  unboxed  camera  for  atleast  30%  less.  Also  try  online  shopping  as  somesites  offer  very  good  a  offers  for  us.
Can  you  tell  me  for  what  purpose  you  need  th  camera  it  will  be  a  help.  Message  me  if  you  need  any  more  help:)

Buying  a  camera,  key  factor  to  consider  should  be  how  you  plan  to  use  it.

->  Want  to  carry  camera  to  functions,  tourist  travel  etc.  compact  point  and  shooters,  that  you  can  slip  in  your  pocket  works  best.   This  also  applies  if  you  want  wife,  children  to  take  pictures.  Sony  compacts  give  good  picture  quality  for  point  and  shoot  users.

->  Want  to  take  technically  better  quality  pictures,  have  patience  to  read  through  the  manual,  learn  the  umpteen  camera  controls  and  learn  advanced  digital  photography  techniques  go  for  high-end  Nikon  /  Canon  cameras.

->  Without  "steep  learning  curve",  high-end  digital  cameras  don't  give  better  picture  quality  than  decent  compact  digital  camera.

thanks  for  the  response  guys,  i  think  there  seems  to  be  a  little  confusion................the  budget  of  $100-$200  that  i  put  up  was  for  a  used  camera  and  not  a  new  one...i  already  have  a  Olympus  Point  and  Shoot  camera  with  me  that  i  use  and  it  takes  pretty  good  pics  too,  the  reason  i  want  to  buy  SLR  is  to  upgrade  my  camera  thats  all...

@  shantanu.....My  question  was  if  someone  is  selling  a  USED  Canon  1000D  for  $150  to  $200  would  it  be  worth  buying  it  (i  know  a  new  Canon  1000D  costs  at  $389  Smile  and  the  other  brands  cost  upwards  ).....

As  sriram  points  out  a  used  camera  will  not  have  much  life  in  it  because  of  the  limited  age  of  CCD  in  them,  so  how  old  is  really  old  for  a  camera....

I  tried  to  read  on  this  topic.  Could  get  an  idea,  that  about  8-10  years  should  not  be  a  problem.  So  a  used  cam  say  for  3-4  years,  should  be  ok  I  guess.  And  the  shutter  actuations  they  say  like  vehicle,  1  lakh!

 All  the  best.
