PostPosted: Thu Dec 09, 2010 2:55 am Post subject: Freshwater Stingray Profiles Reply with quote

 Hello  guys,

I  had  this  discussion  with  Shiva,  Amit  et  al.  in  the  Mumbai-meet  last  week  about  Freshwater  Stingrays.

One  of  the  points  was  whether  there  are  Freshwater  Stingray  species  which  can  fit  in  a  180-220  gal  aquarium.  I  was  of  the  opinion,  there  aren't  any.  I  was  wrong!

This  is  a  link  to  a  MFK  thread  about  Freshwater  Stingray  Profiles:  http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=149245

 To  summarize:

 There  are
    Potamotrygon  Motoro  -  P1  and  Variants/Morphs
     Potamotrygon  Reticulata
     Potamotrygon  cf.  Hystrix
     Potamotrygon  Scobina
     Potamotrygon  Schroederi  "Colombia"
     Potamotrygon  Menchacai  "Tiger"
     Potamotrygon  Leopoldi
     Potamotrygon  Henlei
     Potamotrygon  sp.  "Itaituba"  -  P14
     Potamotrygon  sp.  "Mantilla"
     Potamotrygon  sp.  "Aparico"
     Potamotrygon  Humerosa  -  "Mosaic"
     Plesiotrgyon  Iwamae
     Plesiotrgyon  Iwamae  -  "Black  Tailed"
     Potamotrygon  Yepezi
     Potamotygon  Constellata
     Potamotrygon  Castexi

Of  the  above  list,  three  (in  Bold,  Red  font)  can  be  kept  in  a  2'-2.5'  wide  (6'  long)  tank  as  per  the  information  mentioned  in  that  thread.

These  have  always  fascinated  me  and  are  definitely  in  my  "wish  list"..

I  will  try  to  get  pictures  of  the  Stingrays  commonly  available  in  Bombay  (Kurla),  so  the  experts  here  can  ID  the  species.

 (P.  Motoro  variants  are  the  most  common.  I  think  I  have  seen  P.  Reticulata  but  can't  ID  them  confidently.  I  have  also  seen  a  P.  Leopoldi  once  at  Crawford.)

 Cheers,
 Sid

your  gars  will  tear  them  apart

 other  than  that
 the  reticulata  is  common
 the  hystrix  are  uber  expensive

&  i  am  sure  the  reticulata  need  bigger  than  a  2.5'  wide  tank  as  they  do  get  bigger  than  2.5',  the  min  foot  print  for  the  smallest  ray  is  also  3',  remember  the  tail  too.

Never  seen  freshwater  stingrays  in  Delhi.  I  also  want  to  keep  these.  Is  there  any  small  species  of  stingray  which  can  be  keep  in  small  aquariums?  Sad

Well,  that  thread  mentions  "Adult  Tank  Footprint"  for  P.  Reticulata  as  72"x30"..with  the  max  size  of  the  Ray   (disc-dia)  mentioned  as  14"+.  Maybe  he  (Miles)  is  wrong.

I  will  read  up  one  this.

If  faced  with  a  choice  between  a  good  FW  Stingray  and  FL  Gars,  I  will  get  rid  of  the  FL  Gars.  I  will  continue  to  research  on  this.

Well,  the  Alligator  Gars  are  gone.  I  still  have  the  two  Florida  Gars  (~14"  each).

 Cheers,
 Sid

Well,  that  a  Marine  stingray.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluespotted_ribbontail_ray

 Look  remarkably  beautiful.

The  rest  of  the  Stingrays  mentioned  in  my  previous  posts  (and  the  ones  seen  in  the  "Exhibition"  yesterday)  are  freshwater  Stingrays.

Hey  guys,  its  surprising  that  you  have  not  come  across  stingrays  in  Mumbai.  I  have  been  keeping  fw  stingrays  for  more  than  a  year  now  and  all  my  rays  are  from  Mumbai.  Najeeb  for  starters  had  a  lot  of  rays  (motoros)  a  year  back  and  I  got  a  hybrid  from  Raju  (discus  guy).  Hope  you  guys  are  able  to  get  rays  in  future.  They're  amazing.

 Hi  Nishant,

They  are  available  in  Bombay.  (Motoro  are  about  4xxx  per  piece  at  ~5  inches).

This  thread  is  only  about  the  species  profiles  for  Stingrays.

What  is  the  size  (rather  foot  print)  of  your  Ray-tank?

 Cheers,
 Sid
