 This  is  a  continuation  of.......
 http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=22391&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

The  Fishchasing  season  started  a  bit  late  in  the  2012-13  year.  Other  than  the  ASK  field  trip  in  Jan,  there  were  no  others  in  the  fertile  months  of  Oct,  Nov  and  Dec.

So  it  was  time  again  to  hit  the  road  in  search  of.....the  target  fishes.
 Aplocheilus  kirchmayerii
 Glyptothorax  lonah
 Dravidia  pradhanii

After  installing  a  new  Battery  and  the  stern  warnings  of  the  service  engineer  to  keep  an  eye  on  the  Temperaure  gauge  of  the  car  ringing  in  my  ears,  we  started  off  at  5.30am  on  14th  Feb-2013.  Had  the  breakfast  in  Chitraduga,  which  was  nothing  to  write  home  about.  Zooming  along  the  NH4  we  came  across  the  cryptic  turnaround  to  Dandeli.  It  went  across  hills  and  dales  and  a  Mango  Groove.  Nothing  had  changed  in  the  past  two  years  as  the  roads  go.  The  chicken  shack  had  dissappeared  and  the  waterbodies  we  had  explored  in  our  earlier  venture  to  this  areas  had  all  dried  up.
Had  lunch  at  1.45pm  in  Huliyal  with  discussion  about  changing  our  destination  and  turning  south  in  case  it  was  dry  in  Dandeli  as  well.
Finally  reached  the  first  water  body  after  a  solid  9  hours  of  driving  and  502  Kms  covered.  Phew!

Not  much  to  look  at,  considering  our  expectations.  A  few  locals  were  catching  Channa  gachua  for  their  dinner.

Rahul  and  Madhu  doing  a  recce  before  we  take  out  the  heavy  guns(Nets)  out  of  the  car  and  lug  it  all  the  way  down  the  steep  ravine  that  leads  to  this  stream.

 The  habitat.

Trying  our  luck  below  a  small  check  dam.

 Bingo!  The  catch.
 Glyptothorax  lonah
 Dravidia  fasciata
 Garra  mullya

We  found  a  few  more  species  of......
 Rasbora  dandia
 Schistura  cf  denisonii
 Mystus  cf  malabaricus
 Devario  malabaricus

which  we  promptly  left  back.  We  has  still  three  more  days  to  go  and  no  idea  of  what  we  are  going  to  find.  It's  never  a  good  idea  to  overload  your  car  on  the  first  day!
5.30pm  and  packing  the  catch.  The  Glypt  wen  into  breather  bags,  of  course.

Reached  Dandeli  and  found  the  Hotel  Trevor  had  proposed  we  stay,  during  our  earlier  trip.  kamath  Yatri,  decently  priced  AC  rooms  wih  bed  bugs  included  Chuckle  Nice  Cocum  sherbat  and  modified  butter  chicken  and  Curd  rice  dinner  later,  retired  for  the  night.  Tomorrow  was  going  to  be  another  big  day!

 To  be  continued.....

 Continued......

Nothing  like  a  cold  water  bath  on  a  chilly  morning  to  get  those  eyes  wide  open,  Brrrrr.  So  off  we  started  on  the  morning  of  the  second  day  at  5.30am.  A  bunch  of  morning  walkers,  Two  Jackals,  one  Gaur  and  a  heard  of  deers  later  we  came  across  the  junction  that  would  either  take  us  into  Maharashtra  or  Goa.  A  warm  coffee  with  couple  of  Parle-G  biscuits  later  we  were  off  towards  Goa  again.

6.45am.  Cryptocoryne  cognata  growing  in  a  shaded  area  under  the  bridge.

A  better  picture  of  a  lone  plant.  Emmersed  growth.

 Rahul  picking  up  a  few.

7.50am.  The  second  stream  of  the  day.  Stagnant  water  and  no  fishes.

My  car  on  a  lonely  stretch  of  road.  Patiently  waiting  for  the  driver  and  passengers,  berift  of  it's  ace  Navigator.

8.07am.  The  third  stream  of  the  day.

No  fishy  luck  here  again.  Madhu  and  Rahul  doing  the  recce.  Found  a  nice  piece  of  drift  wood  though.

By  now  all  that  cross  country  treking  down  to  water  bodies  had  built  a  terrific  appetite.  We  were  in  Goa  now  and  all  the  hotels  were  Bar  and  Restaurants,  and  none  were  open  :(

8.40am.  Driving  for  a  good  3.15  hours  and  no  fishes  as  of  now.  The  silence  in  the  car  was  defeaning.  The  roads  were  miserable  and  we  were  clawing  a  meagre  20Kms  per  hour.
 A  Langur  baring  it's  fangs.

 Regards,

Great  report  Nayak.  Some  new  territory  explored.  Most  of  the  streams  are  dry  by  this  time  of  the  year.  I  would  say  Oct-Nov  is  also  a  good  time  of  the  year  to  collect  in  those  parts.  Also,  you  could  check  the  streams  along  the  Karwar  -  Kaiga  road,  right  next  to  the  Kadra  back  waters.

 Eagerly  awaiting  the  further  report.

 Regards,
 Humaid

 Continued....
9.10am.  Still  more  famished.  No  hotels,  but  another  habitat.
Rahul  bringing  the  nets  and  parle-G  biscuits.

 The  habitat.

Rahul  trying  with  the  dip  nets.

 The  catch.  Mystus  bleekeri.

Madhu  trying  with  the  legendry  lucky  dip  net  with  a  hole.  This  net  originally  belonged  to  Shankar  and  was  given  by  him  to  Trevor  as  a  gift.

And  the  catch?  A  Macrobrachium  Sp.

 The  lovely  habitat.

And  the  fauna  below  it.  Dravidia  pradhanii  in  it's  element.

 To  be  continued.....
