 hey  friends

i  want  to  replace  my  existing  lighting  with  high  output  leds(having  the  star  base  already  present  ),  i  am  looking  for  led  sources  which  are  reliable  and  cost  justified  in  terms  of  life  time  and  also  the  power  consumption
the  leds  which  i  was  looking  for  are  good  brands  like  the  cree  ,  philips  etc  (can  any  one  please  add  to  this  list  )  ..............  i  have  been  doing  research  recently  and  found  some  website  like  rapidled  ,  ledgroup  buy  ,  steves  leds   all  of  these  are  US  companies  hence  the  shipping  cost  comes  into  consideration  .
i  am  trying  to  find  some  alternative  to  get  these  leds  in  india  itself  can  anyone  tell  me  about  their  experience  of  finding  led  locally.i   have  to  mention  here  that  i  am  from  goa  and  i  cant  get  the  led  which  i  am  looking  for  in  goa  .
also  as  i  was  going  through  some  online  articles  i  came  across  this  website  dealextreme.com  they  give  free  shipping  to  india  so  i  was  wondering  whether  this  is  a  legit  place  to  buy  leds  ,  has  any  of  the  members  used  this  website  before  please  do  comment
secondly  mine  is  freshwater  aquarium  so  what  combination  of  led  types   (cool  white  ,warm  etc  )  will  i  require  for  my  28  X  12  X  18  (lxbxh  all  in  inches  )?
also  can  any  one  tell  me  how  much  the  spacing  will  i  require  in  between  each  leds  ?also  what  wattage  leds  i  will  require  ?

looking  for  inputs  from  all  IAH  members
 thanks  in  advance

 marlon

 Hi  marlon,
I  have  short  listed  the  following  LED  for  a  similar  kind  of  project..
But  as  you  have  mentioned,  these  are  not  easily  available  locally  in  India.
we  need  to  order  them  online,  and  the  prices  vary  drastically  from  one  site  to  another.
Your  tank  would  probably  need  around  350  to  400  lumens  of  light  to  have  medium  light,  which  can  grow  most  of  the  plants.
But  the  following  LED  put  out  lumens  depending  on  their  in  put  DC  current..
and  it  can  go  upto  max  of  3000mA  for  cree,  and  1000mA  for  Philips.  And  Max  forward  voltage  for  cree  will  be  around  3.3v  and  11v  for  phillips.
So  depending  on  your  LED  selection  and  the  driver  selected,  your  lumens  out  put  from  each  LED  must  be  calculated  from  the  product  catalog  sheets.  then  calculate  how  many  LED  is  needed  to  get  the  require  Lumens  for  your  tank.

 Philips  LUXEON  M  LXR7-SW57
 Philips  LUXEON  M  LXR7-SW65
Philips  are  not  easily  available  on  Star  base  and  are  too  costly  (  can  vary  from  8-  12$)

 Cree  XM-L  T6-1A  7000K
 CREE  XM-L  U2-1A  6300-7000K
 Cree  XM-L  U2-2C  5300-5700K
 Cree  XM-L  U3-1C  6500-7000K
Cree  is  easily  available  on  starbase  heatsink  for  around  5  -  7$

These  LED  are  the  best  in  efficiency  (more  than  100L/w)  and  are  in  the  spectrum  (5000k  -  8000K)  need  for  most  of  the  aquatic  plants.
buy  a  good  heat  sink  plate  and  probably  a  PC  fan  to  keep  the  LED's  cool,  And  depending  on  the  size  of  the  heatsink  you  can  spread  the  LED's  equally.

60'  optics  will  work  if  placed  from  a  height  of  15-16  inches  from  tank  water  level,  And  as  for  the  spacing  between  them  keep  them  centered  leaving  9  inches  from  all  sides  of  the  tank  side  glass..

hey  nidhi  ,shelly  ,  and  all  members  can  you  please  comment  on  the  CRI  of  the  above  mentioned  leds  and  the  importance  of  it

i  think  it  is  around  70%  for  the  cree  xp-g  series  will  the  color   reproduction  be  satisfactory
what  is  the  recommended  CRI   for  a  planted  tank

 thanks

For  cree  LED's..  cool  white  80?CRI  minimum,  neutral  white  80?CRI  and  85?CRI  to  90  CRI  for  warm  white..
For  us  anything  above  80  CRI  will  bring  out  the  best  of  natural  colors  in  aquatic  plants  and  fishes.
