 Hi  All

I  got  some  Java  moss  recently.

The  problem  is  that  the  tips  are  turning  brown  -  almost  as  if  singed.  I  think  the  problem  is  the  temperature  -  its  touching  thirty  in  the  tank.  I  have  the  heater  on  due  to  the  cold  wave.  Can  there  be  other  problems?

I  expect  the  temperature  to  climb  further  as  summer  begins  in  earnest.  Any  suggestions?  It  touches  40  Celsius  here  in  summer.

On  the  other  hand  the  christmas  moss  that  congo  brought  over  is  still  green  and  looks  hale  and  hearty.  I  thought  Java  moss  was  the  hardier  species.

 Suggestions  anybody.

 Deepesh

By  the  way  some  of  the  moss  is  still  outside  the  tank  in  a  bowl  of  water  and  that  appears  to  be  fine.

is  it  too  thickly  tied?  i  have  seen  growth  is  best  when  you  spread  it  out  thinly.  a  good  non-commercial  resource  on  mosses  is  www.aquamoss.net

 Deepesh

Yes  contrary  to  our  belief,  in  my  tank  also,  there  is  a  little  bit  of  browning  here  and  there  with  Java  Moss.  But  Crismass  moss  is  OK.

Brojo  keeps  a  lot  of  moss,  he  can  suggest  something.

One  point,  do  not  use  Glut  in  moss  tanks.

 Regards
 Rana

Where  is  Java  moss  placed  in  the  tank.  If  it  is  under  direct  light  it  will  start  to  brown.  move  it  a  little  away  from  light  and  it  will  be  fine.
Also  as  suggested  earlier  glu  will  kill  it.

 Thanks  Sandeep,  Rana  and  brojo,

I  will  keep  the  moss  out  of  the  direct  light  where  it  is  at  the  moment.

How  does  your  moss  fare  in  summer?

I  have  not  faced  any  problems  in  summers.  I  just  keep  it  out  of  too  much  light.  My  tank  temps  go  upto  30,  and  my  moss  are  having  no  problem  in  that.

If  just  the  tip  is  brown  then  it  may  not  be  heat  related  problem.  When  moss  dies  the  whole  thing  turns  brown.  not  just  the  tip.  the  tip  is  new  growth.  if  that  is  turning  brown  then  there  is  some  other  problem  that  i  am  not  aware  of.

Deepesh  do  you  dose  PMDD?  or  any  other  additive  to  the  water  column?
Yes,  my  java  moss  does  show  signs  of  stress  when  the  temp.  reaches  30*C

 No  PMDD  nor  CO2

 lights  are  CFL

Low  tech  mini  going  on  here.  The  reason  being  that  I  have  to  shift  residence  every  once  in  a  while  -  am  in  a  hostel  now  and  good  rooms  come  in  stages.  I  find  it  easier  to  shift  the  whole  tank  as  such  minus  the  water.

Your  is  due  to  the  temperature.  I've  a  lot  of  Java  moss  in  the  tank;  as  the  temperature  starts  climbing,  the  moss  starts  turning  brown  and  looks  ugly,  especially  when  there's  a  lot  of  it.  (No  other  parameters  in  my  tank  have  changed.)

I  totaly  agree  with  Abhi,  mosses  are  ones  that  love  low  temperatures,  so  keep  the  temperatute  low  and  they  will  do  well,  they  dont  even  need  direct  light  to  grow  if  the  temperature  is  low.  Try  doing  something  for  the  temperature  like  directing  2  computer  fans  to  the  surface  of  the  water,  that  should  reduce  the  temperature  by  about  3  to  4  degree.  But  as  this  will  lead  to  a  lot  of  evaporation,  be  ready  to  fill  your  tank  almost  daily.  Dont  worry  about  the  moss,  just  keep  it  in  cool  water  and  they  wil  spread  like  fire.

All  mosses  love  low  temperatures  and  that  is  why  we  Bangalore  aqua  gardeners  have  an  advantage.  Smile

Dont  worry  about  Trevor,  he  just  loves  rubbing  it  into  people  who  are  not  from  our  Lovely  city.  Very Happy  .  Try  the  fan  stuff  and  i  am  sure  it  should  help,  i  am  originally  from  Chandigarh  so  i  know  about  the  climate.  Put  in  botles  of  ice  to  bring  it  down,  i  will  search  for  an  article  on  a  DIY  chiler  using  a  bar  freezer,  if  you  can  lay  your  hands  on  a  second  hand  one,  great  your  tank  will  do  amazing.

Hi  Nikhil,  great  to  know  you  are  from  chandigarh.  I  am  shifting  living  quarters  again  -  back  to  hostel  to  a  one  room  set.  I  expect  the  tank  to  be  near  (but  not  directly  in  front  of)  a  cooler  -  the  one  that  works  by  evaporating  water.  So  I  expect  temperatures  to  drop.

Those  of  you  who  are  using  computer  fans  -  what  voltage  do  you  run  them  at?  12  V?  Will  an  ACtoDC  adaptor  rated  for  12  V  work?  Or  is  it  5V?

Trevor,  wont  java  moss,  Taxiphyllum  spp  survive  at  higher  temperatures  compared  to  say  christmas  moss?

Maay  people  whom  I  spoke  to  report  they  are  able  to  reduce  water  temperature  by  about  2  degrees.  Are  you  sure  about  3  to  4  degrees  drop  ?
