For  me,  this  one  is  a  classic  from  the  court  with  the  highest  authority  -  Lifting  the  ban  on  'Jallikattu',   the  bull  taming  sport.  The  ban  was  called  off,  just  after  a  few  days  of  protest.

So,  will  such  a  protest  help  legalising  fish  imports?

 I  second  Shankar  on  this.

 Lets  protest!
Lifting  the  ban  or  atleast  relaxing  would  have  tremendous  influence  on  this  hobby.

I  for  one  will  never  support  this  Edit.
The  first  guy  to  suffer  if  we  so  call  "legalize  imports"  will  be  Shankar.

What  exactly  is  the  problem  you  hobbyists  face?  Please  enlighten  me.
Be  specific  and  maybe  we  can  solve  your  individual  grudge.

I  do  not  believe  any  of  the  carriers  or  people  who  source  fishes  from  abroad  will  "suffer"  .  Infact  It  will  be  good  for  their  business!!!!.  More  business  and  more  hobbyists  can  not  be  termed  "suffering"

What  would  happen  is  more  variety  of  fish  available  to  more  hobbyists.  Most  Important  at  more  affordable  prices  rather  than  some  of  the  "Fancy"  and  ridiculous  prices  we  have  to  pay  today  Thanks  only  to  the  current  govt  rules  which  are  exploited.

It  is  time  for  our  hobby  also  to  move  from  the  "license  Raj"  era  to  the  new  globalization  era!

Going  Native  is  a  wonderful  thing......But  then  do  we  say  stop  keeping  all  other  non  native  fish  forever?

I  agree  with  Trvor,  Why  do  we  need  to  legalise  imports  and  contend  with  a  new  set  of  problems?

 But  Pradeep,

Out  of  Ignorance...What  new  set  of  problems  do  you  forsee

Some  thing  which  can  go  wrong....

If  it  is  introduction  of  non  natives  into  our  waters...I  really  wonder  if  it  will  hold  true  more  than  what  is  happening  today!  ...Dont  think  someone  who  buys  say  Altums  at  a  few  thousand  rupees  will  dump  it  into  the  nearby  lake

If  it  is  a  disease  then  yes  we  would  need  to  have  associated  quarentine  facilities  along  with  the  legalization  of  imports

intro  of  non-natives  and  also  i  am  sure  we  will  have  massive  imports  of  farm  bred  fish  that  will  wipe  out  many  farms  here.

 Guys,

I  saw  (1  inch  +)  piranah's  for  sale  for  10/-  each  @  kolathur.  Â Crying or Very sad  It's  likely  that  someone  would  dump  these  fishes  to  some  local  stream  in  the  future,  but  that's  what  the  govt  should  be  taking  care  of.

Opening  up  the  import  restrictions  would  provide  access  to  varieties  of  fishes  at  affordable  price  for  the  hobby.  Thumbs Up  Â The  number  of  hobbysts  would  then  exponentially  increase.  Many  variety  of  fishes  are  now  also  available  in  the  market  but  accessible  to  hobbysts,  with  deep  pockets  only.  And  we  do  need  some  serious  "Competitions"  to  get  better  products  at  better  prices   Very Happy  .

And  I  dont  really  believe  in  promoting  native  species  as  many  of  them  are  already  overfished  and  no  serious  breeding  programmes  are  happening.

 Regards,
 Prasoon

iam  with  shankar..  i  do  agree  with  trevor  sir  and  retro  gk  but  only  when  it  come  to  fresh  water.  but  what  about  marine  fishes  any  marine  hobbyist  will  loose  hope  when  they  seek  our  kolatur  hi-fi  quarantine  setup  Chuckle..   still  salt  water  hobby  r  very  less  in  india  compared  to  other  nations.  iam  just  talking  about  the  quality  of  marine  fishes  that  we  get  in  india  please  do  not  mistake.  they  r  half  dead  by  the  time  it  reaches  the  hobbyist  hand  due  to  very  bad  handling  and  a  poor  quarantine  setup  and  thats  why  we  salt  water  hobbyist  like  to  import  marine  fishes.  i  guess  chennai  salt  water  hobbyist  will  agree  with  me  Smile..
