If  it  is  Rhinomugil  corsula,  are  there  any  reports  of  that  fish  being  found  so  inland?  it  is  an  esturine  fish....  it  spends  most  of  life  in  freshwater  around  the  esturine  zone.  Mysore  is  over  1000  kms  from  the  nearest  estuary

 fom  what  the  pics  appear
i  have  seen  those  fish  in  MAHARASHTRA(nanded)  to  be  precise,  in  the  GODAVARI  river,
these  are  locally  known  as  rocket  fish  there,
they  swim  in  schools  with  their  heads  out  of  water,
when  frightened  they  dive  about  2-3  feet  in  the  water  and  stay  that  way  for  about  a  max  of  5  minutes  after  which  they  come  up  even  if  there  is  danger  around  take  a  gulp  of  air  and  then  go  back  again  if  frightened, these  fish  are  hunted  by  larger  fish  which  attach  them  from  the  bottom  as  these  keep  looking  out  of  the  water,
tried  catching  them  but  was  not  able  to,  those  caught  in  the  fishermens  net  died  out  quickly

I  have  lot  of  instances  where  suddenly  when  you  see  the  tadpoles  of  terrestrial  frogs,  you  can  esaily  mistake  them  for  fish,  till  you  have  a  second  look.  They  are  brightly  coloured  and  they  swim  schools.

You  should  recheck  your  information  on  the  Rhinomugil  corsula.  I  have  seen  them  in  the  Bheemeshwari  fishing  and  nature  camp  100  kms  off  Bangalore.

As  for  Mysore  being  over  1000  Kms  from  the  nearest  estuary  you  seriously  need  to  double  check  your  sources.

And  the  size  of  a  tadpole  and  this  large  fish  is  way  off  to  be  a  case  of  mistaken  identity.
