 Dear  Sid,
I  was  wondering  why  you  suggested  to  give  away  the  goldfish  and  go  for  Malawi  Ciclids  or  Ca/SA  Ciclids?  Then  I  googled  it  and  found  out  that  Chiclids  are  also  very  beautiful  and  colorful  fishes.  So  I  am  considering  getting  a  new  tank  for  Chiclids.  In  fact  I'd  like  to  fabricate  a  5'  tank  myself!  I'm  looking  at  some  DIY  videos  on  aquarium  fabrication  and  its  support  stand.  Hope  to  fabricate  it  soon  and  then  i'll  post  its  videos.  Also  i'd  like  to  know  whether  Zebra  danios  can  be  kept  along  with  Goldfishes?
And  I'd  like  to  thank  you  for  the  prompt  postings.  You  people  are  doing  a  great  job  and  I  really  appreciate  it.

 Hi  Imran,

Your  turtle  will  reach  that  size  in  a  years  span  if  properly  taken  care  of.  Almost  5-6  months  later  (post  shooting  that  video),  those  two  guys  were  moved  to  a  pals  indoor  pond.  Hence  most  of  us  would  stress  on  'tank  volume'.  If  possible,  keep  the  turtle  setup  bare  bottom  as  a  beginner..  easier  for  maintenance.

Please  do  update  your  location  as  well.   Smile

 Regards,
 Rohan.

 Dear  Rohan,
Thank  you  for  the  speedy  post.  I  really  appreciate  the  effort  you  people  are  putting  up  in  keeping  the  forum  buzzing  and  helping  beginners  like  me.  I  really  liked  your  idea  about  keeping  the  turtle  tank  bare  bottomed.  Also  what  kind  of  filtration  system  should  I  use  for  my  RES's  turtles?  Also,  How  can  I  determine  the  gender  of  my  turtle  as  i'm  thinking  of  getting  it  a  mate  preferably  of  the  opposite  sex...Wink.
I  am  from  Panipat  which  is  about  100  Kms  from  Delhi.  Generally  I  source  my  aquarium  stuff  from  Delhi  only  as  Panipat  has  only  one  LFS.

 Preferred  filtration  systems:
 -  Canisters
 -  Sumps

Please  ensure  that  there  is  not  much  turbulence.  Your  turtle  would  be  stressed  easily.

Also,  to  maintain  optimum  water  quality  I  would  suggest  feeding  the  turtle  in  a  separate  tub.  Once  done  with  the  feeding,  he/she  can  be  released  back  into  the  setup.

 THIS  would  help  you.

 Hi  Koolkhan,

Please  see  below  a  write  up  for  the  proper  care  for  your  turtle.
Please  you  go  through  them  please  make  sure  you  read  about  them  throughly.

The  structure  of  the  turtle  aquarium  are  excellent  here  as  provided  by  the  other  readers  and  you  can  make  like  that  as  well.

Read  about  their  disease  and  infection  (mainly  respiratory  infections  where  it  opens  and  closes  it's  mouth  and  taking  breath  through  mouth  and  water  secretion  from  closed  eyes  and  another  where  the  lack  of  calcium  and  sunlight  make  the  shell  softer  and  can  have  easily  cut  and  ulcers....or  may  the  hibernation  of  them  and  the  list  is  very  big  and  here  are  some  examples  )

My  writeup  for  RES  (also  available  in  Yahoo  answers  ).

I  kept  4  RES  (Red  ear  sliders)  in  my  house  and  they  were  pretty  amazing  animals  to  keep  and  I  was  very  happy  to  keep  them  but  i  must  admit  they  grow  big  (4  of  mine  went  big  as  1ft  and  there  were  no  place  at  my  house  to  keep  those  big  4  and  moreover  i  was  moving  out  of  Bangalore  So  I  donated  them  in  the  Bannerghatta  National  Park  in  Bangalore. They  have  a  big  enclosure  for  RES  and  anyone  in  Bangalore  can  still  go  and  visit  them. They  are  very  happy  and  doing  quIte  well).

Please  do  not  keep  it  in  a  shunted  small  round  place  as  the  growth  will  be  less  and  due  to  round  place  it  will  be  confused  always.

The  feeding  was  very  interesting  and  I  used  feed  them  turtle  food,  green  veg,  boiled  meat,  chicken,  calcium  tablet  dust,  boiled  egg,  fruits,  cuttle  fish  bone  and  vitamin  in  the  water  and  live  fish  (after  quarantine  the  fish  for  at  least  week)  and  what  not  and  sometimes  I  used  to  feed  them  live  cricket  as  well  they  used  be  very  happy  and  used  to  eat  food  from  my  hand  and  I  still  miss  them  a  lot  Sad  .Read  thoroughly  about  their  food  habits  and  calcium  in  the  food  is  mast.

They  are  messy  eaters  but  they  cannot  eat  on  the  land  and  they  have  to  eat  in  the  water  so  you  can  remove  it  and  keep  in  a  small  plastic  tumbler  and  provide  the  food  there  and  once  it  is  done  you  can  take  back  in  the  main  tank,

Keep  the  main  tank  clean  and  clear  and  maintain  the  water  temperature.you  can  also  put  your  tank  in  the  sun  but  make  sure  u  cover  it  and  so  that  it  cannot  escape  and  no  predators  can  attack  it.

The  Local  fish  Shop  or  pet  shop  people  will  tell  you  that  they  will  not  grow  but  the  fact  is  the  size  is  1t  or  more  if  they  grow  with  healthy  diet  and  one  has  to  be  very  careful  to  accommodate  them  in  a  small  enclosure  as  well...I  used  to  keep  them  in  a  3ft  Aquarium  and  made  it  in  such  a  way  that  they  can  access  the  water  and  the  sand  and  dry  area  simultaneously  and  add  some  stones  and  a  bark  wood  make  the  place  little  moist  and  ideal  habitat  for  it.....You  need  to  put  a  bulb  with  high  intensity  so  that  it  can  bask  (  It  is  absolute  must)  My  electricity  bill  was  little  high  as  per  the  extra  light  i  need  to  put  on  for  them. If  you  want  I  can  share  the  tank  plan  with  the  forum.

I  strongly  suggest  reading  about  them  200%  before  even  you  bring  them  at  home  and  you  should  not  be  surprised  and  think  once  you  have  trouble  with  them.I  must  suggest  to  read  the  disease  and  problems  that  your  RES  may  faced.Everyone  likes  to  see  the  animal  healthy  but  one  should  be  prepared  to  face  when  they  are  not  well  too.

Be  careful  about  the  Salmonella  infection  for  humans  and  wash  your  hand  every  time  you  handle  them.
Keep  a  reptile  vet  handy  for  any  complications  and  read  about  their  illness  and  health  casrefully.  I  kept  them  for  3  years  and  still  i  had  plans  to  keep  them  once  again  as  they  make  great  pets.

I  am  not  sure  about  Feng  Sui  but  keeping  2  will  make  them  happy  and  will  get  each  other  company.
Two  are  not  so  difficult  to  take  care  and  they  will  do  just  fine.

One  thing  I  want  to  emphasize  here  since  you  have  bought  them  before  winter  please  make  sure  the  basking  lamp  is  on  whenever  they  require  and  place  them  under  the  sun  often(  so  that  the  water  in  the  living  area  is  warm  and  they  get  natural  light  to  become  strong  on  the  shell).  Keep  them  in  the  closed  plastic  tubs  and  cover  the  top  with  wire  mess  to  prevent  it  from  dogs, cats  and  specially  crows.

Let  it  roam  free  in  the  house  provided  the  house  is  well  guarded  from  cats, dogs  and  crows....

Let  Me  know  if  you  need  any  more  ongoing  help.....
 Source(s):

Filtration  mentioned  above  are  prefect  but  make  sure  you  clean  the  water  as  well  and  speed  of  the  filter  should  be  moderate.

 Dear  Amazonian2010,
Thank  you  for  the  detailed  reply.  It  was  really  enlightning.  I  have  certain  more  queries.I  have  a  2'x  1'  x  1'  tank  in  which  i'm  currently  keeping  my  fishes  and  turtles.  There  is  a  glass  partition  to  seperate  the  two  creatures.  I  will  be  moving  my  fishes  to  a  4'  x  1.5'  x  1'  tank  soon.
Since  i  want  to  use  my  old  tank  for  my  turtle,  please  do  share  your  tank  plan  so  that  I  can  replicate  it.
Currently  my  turtle  is  only  2"~3"  long  and  i'm  feeding  it  only  turtle  food  pellets.  Is  that  enough  or  should  I  be  giving  them  something  more?

 Thanks  in  advance

 Imran

 Hi  Koolkhan,

I  had  a  setup  like  what  Sidrock  had  mentioned  in  his  post.  I  have  requested  the  LFS  guys  to  prepare  a  tank  like  that.  My  Dimensions  were  different  as  I  had  4  RES  and  they  got  the  maximum  place  to  play  around  and  grow.  My  babies  were  12inch  each  when  i  donated  them  to  the  zoological  park  in  Bangalore.

My  tank  dimentions  were  as  =  3ft  x  2ft  (wide)  x  1.5ft  (height)  since  i  mabe  up  my  mind  to  keep  only  turtles.
I  had  2  power  filters  working  24/7  but  the  speed  was  very  moderate.there  were  big  stones  and  gravels  (  big  enough  so  that  they  cannot  swallow  the  stones)  and  a  wood  sitting  in  the  water  and  the  head  popping  up  the  water.
The  resting  place  and  the  ramp  is  exactly  how  Sidrock  had  provided  the  photos.
I  had  UV  tubes  as  normal  sunlight  the  amount  is  not  enough  for  them  to  bask.

The  water  height  was  1ft  normally.

The  turtles  food  criteria  is  very  interesting  the  pellets  are  must  but  apart  from  them  you  need  to  feed  them  as  exactly  Rohan  had  mentioned  above.

Be  careful  as  they  are  going  to  grow  big  and  that  time  you  need  to  be  more  acomodative  in  terms  of  their  demands  and  if  you  are  really  serious  about  keeping  them  make  sure  you  are  making  a  relative  big  place  for  them  to  stay  now  rather  than  spending  each  time  as  they  grow.

Akshayrox123:  it  disgusts  me  to  see  you  keeping  a  'sea  turtle'  in  a  tank   Thumb Down  ;  these  are  endangered  species  and  I  for  one  would  let  the  police  know  at  the  earliest  because  what  you  are  doing  is  TOTALLY  ILLEGAL.  Its  because  of  the  demand  for  turtle  eggs  and  hatchlings  that  they  are  diminishing  and  are  hardly  seen  nesting  on  the  west  coast  of  india  anymore.  You  definitely  dont  want  to  spend  a  large  part  of  the  remaining  years  of  your  life  in  jail  and  have  a  bunch  of  animal  activists  hounding  you.

If  you  think  its  cool,  wake  up;  its  not.  I'm  very  disappointed  and  angry;  a  beautiful  creature  like  that  needs  to  be  in  the  sea,  not  in  a  small  tank  Sad
I'd  suggest  you  release  it  at  the  earliest...  or  expect  some  action.  I'm  sure  a  lot  of  other  forum  members  will  share  this  same  view.

Moderators:  what  is  your  take  on  this?  how  can  you  tolerate  someone  posting  pictures  of  an  animal  in  captivity  that  is  ILLEGAL.  Such  individuals  need  to  be  banned  with  immediate  effect.

"My  logger  head  was  with  me  for  3  yrs...  "  that  in  itself  is  admission  of  a  crime...  if  you  knew,  why  XXX  XXX  did  you  keep  it?

Yes,  I  abused  you...  because  if  you're  doing  something  illegal  its  deserving  of  abuse.
Stop  sending  me  PMs  please;  if  you  want  to  say  something  say  it  out  here  in  the  open.

Three  years  of  keeping  a  beautiful  animal  in  captivity...  very  sad!
