 Hi  AKG,
I  used  to  live  in  Mumbai......and  trust  me  the  water  is  just  perfect  there.  Ph  is  around  6.2~6.8,  and  plain  aged  water  with  no  additives  was  just  fine  for  Water  Changes.  If  I  am  not  mistaken,  I  used  to  get  away  with  a  water  change  of  40%  every  third  day  (If  the  feeding  is  right,  you  should  be  good  with  the  same  amount  of  WC's  in  Mumbai)....my  fishes  were  growing  nice  &  fat.  My  guru  was  Pinto  of  United  Sports,  which  is  just  opposite  the  Marine-Lines  Masjid  (The  one  in  the  middle  of  the  road).......a  sporting  goods  store,  the  rear  of  which  Pinto  had  transformed  into  his  private  den  for  African  Cichlids  &  Discus.  He  was  the  first  guy  to  breed  successfully  the  Discus  in  India.......and  he  taught  me  a  lot.  If  he  is  still  around,  you  should  pay  him  a  visit  &  he  is  ever  helpful  with  a  lot  of  advice  for  anyone  interested  in  Fishes.
Your  filtration  seems  fine,  however  if  the  fishes  seem  unbalanced  when  you  turn  on  the  powerhead,  then  it  is  not  really  necessary.  Sponges  are  great  to  harbor  bacteria  and  aeration,  and  you  are  doing  the  rest  with  the  water  changes.
Get  a  minimum  of  6  Discus,  like  you  said  they  spread  aggression,  and  basically  they  are  schooling  fishes.
Its  only  necessary  for  upto  4  feeds  a  day  while  the  fishes  are  young,  beyond  4"  ,  they  are  just  fine  with  2  or  maybe  3  feeds  a  day.
Driftwood,  is  a  great  buffer  of  the  PH  &  does  a  good  job  at  stabilizing  the  aquarium  during  its  initial  cycle.......however  a  lot  of  bog  woods  sold  are  of  many  different  types  of  trees.  If  not  cured  properly  (Completely  dried  &  then  boiled),  they  tend  to  leach  toxins  which  will  be  harmful  to  the  Discus  (The  reason  people  advice  against  the  use  of  the  same).  African  Swahala  &  Malysian  driftwood  are  considered  the  best.  Infact  a  lot  of  large  Discus  tank  setups  have  the  Driftwood  as  the  only  decorative.

This  is  a  giant  3  meter  discus  show  tank.  Inspired  by  the  amazon  rivers  the  owner,  Mr.  Müller  from  germany  used  only  a  few  features  like  drift  wood,  sand  and  some  stones  to  arrange  this  amazing  aquarium.  You  can  see  by  clicking  on  the  thumbnail  what  fish  he  keeps  in  this  tank  at  the  moment

Finally  a  lot  of  us  seem  to  give  more  advice  to  the  PH  rather  than  the  Hardness,  which  is  actually  more  important  as  a  buffer  of  the  PH.  Low  KH  are  the  reasons  for  massive  PH  swings.......so  I  thought  I  would  add  this  link  to  the  understanding  of  Hardness,

 http://aquaticconcepts.thekrib.com/Articles/Water_Chemistry.htm

Keeping  Discus  is  recreation  &  not  work  (too  many  WC's)......so  get  the  right  information  &  balance  to  enjoy  your  fish.  All  the  best,
 Sadhak

The  peppering  on  my  pigeon  blood  discus  has  actually  reduced  over  the  last  couple  of  days!  Is  that  possible??  I  thought  pepperings  actually  increased  with  size/age,  or  at  the  very  least  remained  the  same..........

 Hi,
the  black  peppering  on  pigeon  blood  is  always  there  but  don't  show  if  the  discus  is  very  stable  and  if  the  background  is  light  coloured.  Pigeons  will  show  more  peppering  as  they  reach  2  years  and  above.
