And  today  I  saw  some  white  spongy  layer  on  my  drift  wood.  I  would  think  it  to  be  a  fungus  but  the  aquarium  guy  feels  it  to  be  algae.  Please  take  a  look  into  the  pic

 hi,

White  fungus  on  the  driftwood  means  it  is  not  treated  or  cured  properly.

How  many  fishes  have  you  added.  Not  wise  to  add  fish  immediately  after  the  setup.  Should  have  allowed  the  tank  to  settle  before  adding  the  fishes  and  that  too  few  at  a  time  and  not  all  together.

Deepak  -  I  dont  know  the  brand.  The  shop  guy  sais  aqua  clay  and  the  black  one  came  in  a  3L  packet  called  aqua  grow

Vinod  -  Now  it  makes  me  think  about  curing.  But  does  fungus  has  any  issues?  I  see  fishes  eating  it,  also  I  saw  small  stream  of  bubbles  coming  out  of  it.  Do  I  need  to  remove  it  from  the  tank?

Fungus  is  fine,  you  get  fungus  even  after  treating  driftwood.  Platy,Guppies,  otos  will  love  it.  It  may  take  week  or  even  months  for  the  fungus  to  completely  go  away.  So  no  worries.

But  I  am  surprised  to  see  fishes  in  your  tank  without  cycling?  Your  ammonia  levels  could  be  high,  this  could  be  a  reason  too  for  your  fungus.

fungus  is  ok,  dont  bother  about  that,  or  you  can  add  some  algae  eater  if  your  very  particular  of  the  asthetic  in  short  period  too.  Plant  in  the  foreground  looks  like  blyxa  japonica,  if  yes  you  will  find  it  very  difficult  to  grow.  they  need  lot  of  light,  Co2  and  ferts.

all  other  plants  in  the  tank  seem  suited  for  a  Beginner.  share  the  detail  of  the  accessories  and  live  stock.

If  you  have  not  cycled  the  tank,  then  you  will  soon  see  some  stubben  algae  in  your  tank.

I  think  you  got  the  cycling  all  wrong.  Aquarium/nitrogen  cycling  is  a  process  of  converting  poisonous  ammonia  (fish  waste)to  les  poisonous  nitrogen  by  established  bacteria.  Here  is  a  link  for  better  understanding.

Arun  -  You  got  it  wrong!  Nitrogen  cycle  means  you  need  to  cycle  your  tank  to  grow  sufficient  nitrifying  bacteria  before  you  add  fish  to  the  tank.  This  is  applicable  for  all  type  of  fish  tanks,  doesn't  matter  its  a  planted  tank  or  regular  tank.
If  you  don't  do  this,  you  will  end  up  in  ammonia  spike  at  one  point  that  is  going  to  kill  all  your  fish  in  one  shot  or  will  stress  them  out  to  slowly  kill  them  with  different  issues.  So,  having  said  you  already  introduced  your  fish,  at  this  point,  I  would  say  keep  checking  your  ammonia  levels  and  do  50%  water  change  every  2  days,  ensure  your  water  don't  have  chlorine  in  it.  Use  prime  or  any  dechlorinating  agent  before  adding  water  in  to  your  tank.
Adding  water  with  chlorine  is  going  to  kill  all  your  established  nitrifying  bacteria,  that  will  lead  to  start  nitrogen  cycle  back  to  zero.

To  have  a  successful  planted  tank,  you  must  follow  these  steps.  There  is  no  other  choice

 Sure  Gokul,

Thanks  for  the  insight.  I  am  not  using  chlorinated  water  rather  using  can  water  supplied  for  drinking  purpose.  As  you  said  yesterday  I  observed  fishes  coming  on  top  of  the  tank  despite  of  tank  looking  clear.  I  then  did  90%  water  change.  Now  they  seem  to  be  happier  and  swimming  in  the  bottom.  Secondly  I  also  suspect  the  drift  wood  if  it  is  releasing  any  toxin  in  the  water  because  I  would  see  it  is  emitting  very  small  bubbles.  Also  I  recently  found  one  of  my  yellow  male  guppie's  tail  has  streaks  of  red  dot.  It  makes  me  to  believe  that  he  is  getting  infected   Sad  .  Do  you  have  any  piece  of  advice  to  work  on?

 Thanks,
 Arun
