 HI  Sikander,

My  sump  is  actually  a  standard  aquarium  (Juwel  Rio  125  google  it  and  you  can  get  its  images).  I  have  a  1ft  square  plastic  food  grade  bread  box  filled  with  6"  mixed  grain  coral  and  aragonite  sand  as  a  DSB  with  some  large  pieces  of  Man  made  Live  rock  and  some  natural  live  rock  around  and  over  the  DSB  box.  A  couple  of  powerheads  to  keep  ths  flow  around  the  DSB  and  previously  had  a  sump  pump  to  push  the  water  into  the  main  tank  but  that  has  now  been  replaced  with  a  1200LPH  canoster  filter.

I  will  get  a  couple  of  pics  through  but  cannot  take  any  from  the  side  as  my  sump  is  in  the  garage  and  heavily  insulated  (due  to  the  cold  weather)  so  I  can  only  take  pics  from  the  top.

I  will  eventually  replace  it  with  a  proper  sump  when  I  get  more  time.

 Nim

Ok  attaching  some  pictures  of  the  sump.  Basic  design  nothing  special  at  the  moment  but  you  can  see  the  skimmer,  DSB  and  the  rocks.  Also  have  a  bit  of  macro  algae  growing  in  it.

Thanks  Arvind,  unfortunately  the  planted  tanks  are  now  dissolved  as  I  am  now  purely  into  saltwater.  I  might  setup  another  planted  tank  some  day  when  I  have  a  bit  more  space  but  for  the  moment  I  am  concentrating  only  on  the  marine  side  of  the  hobby  :)

Have  had  high  tech  planted  tanks  for  over  8  yrs  now  so  I  can  share  the  pictures  if  you  want  to  see  in  a  new  thread  but  since  they  are  long  gone  (both  tanks  in  the  pic  are  around  2  yrs  old  before  I  moved  home).

 Hi  Nim,

I  think  that  you  may  not  require  that  amount  of  flow  in  the  tank.  I  used  to  have  a  Percula  90  with  coral,  mainly  LPS  and  soft  growing  well  for  about  two  and  a  half  years.  I  dismantled  the  tank  in  june  2008  before  moving  back  to  Chennai  from  the  UK.  The  only  changes  I  made  was  increase  one  power  head,  the  one  in  the  lower  R  corner  (  if  you  are  facing  the  tank)  from  1000  to  1800  and  had  a  external  filter  to  run  an  aqaumedic  phosphate  reactor.  Flow  can  be  reduced  provided  there  is  a  lot  of  space  between  the  rock.  I  am  not  sure  how  to  upload  my  old  aqaurium  pictures  with  mail.  Also,  was  your  tank  used  in  an  previous  set-up  as  there  appears  to  be  some  remnants  of  corallina  on  the  back  wall.

 Hi  Ashok,

I  know  that  less  flow  can  be  done  but  my  problem  with  this  setup  is  that  I  have  almost  100  kilos  of  Live  rock  in  it  and  there  is  no  way  I  can  get  the  water  to  circulate  between  the  back  rocks  without  having  this  much  flow  (considering  50%  of  it  is  behind  the  rocks).

Yes  the  tank  was  used  but  all  old  coralline  etc.  was  all  cleaned  up.  What  you  see  if  all  fresh  growth  developed  over  the  past  1  your  and  the  white  parts  where  the  top  layer  has  fallen  off.

Will  be  putting  up  some  more  new  pictures  though  not  much  has  changed  since  the  old  one  except  a  few  more  corals  added.

I  dont  use  a  phosphate  reactor  but  use  Vodka,  DSB  and  Ozone  and  an  obscene  amount  of  live  rock,  Also  in  the  process  of  setting  up  the  DSB  as  a  refugium  but  I  do  have  problems  of   growing  macro  algae..  Chaeto  just  does  not  want  to  grow  but  it  does  not  die  either  and  Caulerpa  is  a  bit  too  slow  (3  types)  as  well.  It  could  be  down  to  very  low  nitrates  and  phosphates  but  I  wont  work  on  that  front  to  help  the  macro  algae   Chuckle

Thanks  for  your  comments  guys  Smile  I  am  comming  to  Delhi/Lucknow  for  3  weeks  in  the  end  of  June  so  the  tank  will  be  left  unmaintained  during  this  period  and  hence  I  have  butterflies  in  my  stomach   Surprised

 Arvind,

The  second  tank  in  my  signature  was  setup  as  a  Walstad  tank  in  2004  december.  It  used  a  proper  soil  substrate  and  a  fine  layer  of  sand  on  top  to  prevent  the  soil  from  clouding  the  water  column.

Used  about  1.5"  deep  layer  of  loam  soil  (I  suppose  clay  could  have  been  better).  Most  root  feeders  like  Swords  and  crypts  did  take  a  white  to  establish  but  stem  plants  and  vallis  took  off  straight  away.

I  did  not  use  CO2  injection  (as  per  Walstad  system)  and  only  dosed  trace  elements  once  a  month.

Fish  stock:  1  Gold  nugget  plec  and  a  betta.  Tank  size:  30x15wx18H

I  did  have  an  eheim  canister  in  there  but  I  dont  think  it  was  needed  and  perhaps  this  was  the  only  drawback  of  the  system

Lighting  initially  was  2  x  80W  Mercury  vapour  but  replaced  with  a  70W  halide  (much  better).  The  tank  also  got  4  hrs  of  direct  sun  in  the  summers  sometimes  and  about  20  mins  in  winters  (in  england,  20  mins  of  sun  in  winters  is  bieng  very  lucky   Chuckle   )

Had  this  running  for  2  yrs  until  I  got  fedup  bored  with  vallis  taking  over  and  not  much  fish  to  watch  and  in  this  2  your  period,  I  had  ZERO  Algae,  did  a  water  change  only  once  and  had  eventually  after  about  a  year  stopped  adding  trace  elements  but  the  tank  stood  its  ground  as  an  ecosystem.  I  fed  the  betta  once  a  week  but  then  moved  it  to  the  other  tank  eventually.

Concept  tank  that  I  would  try  again  as  I  am  a  bit  more  prepared  now.

 Nim
