Hey  man,  I  would  suggest  you  read  on  the  forums  regarding  indiapetstore.  They  dont  have  a  very  good  reputation.

Get  the  API  Master  Saltwater  Test  Kit,  otherwise  buy  individual  kits  from  API...

If  API  is  not  available,  then  try  to  get  salifert.

 Hi  All,

my  computer  crashed  at  home  and  hence  was  out  of  action  for  the  past  2  days.

Ok,I  have  finally  got  the  test  kits  and  done  all  the  tests.

Below  are  the  results. Please  read  and  advise.

 Salinity-  1.024

 Ph-  8.3

 Ammonia  -  0

Nitrite-  between  3.0  to  4.0  ppm   (The  color  chart  has  only  readings  between  0  to  5ppm.)

My  question  now  is  ,what  is  the  next  immediate  thing  I  need  to  do.

and  also  whether  I  need  to  buy  a  nitrate  test  kit  or  what  i  have  is  enough?

and  how  to  reduce  the  nitrites  or  is  the  reading  between  3.0-4.00  ppm  normal?

 Advise  Please

 VJ

I  would  highly  recommend  not  purchasing  anything  from  Indiapetstore.  They  take  orders  but  don't  send  you  the  items  nor  do  they  refund  your  money.  They  owe  me  15k  plus.  Check  other  threads  about  this  company  if  you  don't  believe  me  or  just  Google  the  company  name.

your  tank  has  not  gone  throught  the  full  nitrogen  cycle  as  yet  since  the  nitrite  is  not  zero.  However,  a  nitrite  of  5  is  unlikely  to  harm  fish.  In  any  case  it  is  safe  to  wait  for  the  nitrite  to  become  zero,  do  a  large  water  change,  check  parameters  in  a  week  and  only  then  add  fish.  The  nitrogen  cycle  is  pretty  much  the  same  in  fresh  and  saltwater.  You  will  need  to  check  nitrates  after  the  ammonia  and  nitrites  become  zero.  Try  and  keep  nitrates  below  20  ppm  for  a  fish  only  aqaurium.  You  can  add  one  fish  at  a  time  to  keep  check  on  the  nutrients.  I  do  not  know  what  brand  of  test  kits  you  have  but  the  API  saltwater  master  kit  (  NH4,  No2,  No3  and  PH)  will  be  sufficient  for  a  FOWLER.

Your  nitrite  has  to  be  0.  The  other  parameters  are  fine.  Get  a  test  kit  for  Nitrate  also.

The  nitrites  should  reduce  with  time,  once  the  nitrites  are  0,  then  do  a  nitrate  test.  Should  take  another  week  or  2.

 Hi  All.

 Finally  nitrite  has  become  undetectable

so  need  to  check  nitrates  now

and  what  about  the  WC  to  be  done,do  I  do  a  30%  or  40%  water  change  before  checking  nitrates?

and  also  in  the  top  filter  i  have  noticed  that  once  the  debrii  gets  accumulated  in  the  sponge  the  flow  is  becoming  stagnant

as  the  water  is  always  flowing  above  the  sponge.any  method  to  correct  this?

 Thanks

 VJ

Clean  the  sponge  daily  or  every  day  and  replace  it  every  weekend.  Otherwise  your  nitrates  will  keep  on  increasing..

 Hi  Gatorx,

I  had  previously  asked  if  it  is  ok  to  clean  the  sponge  using  fresh  tap  water  but  got  replies  saying  that  we  must  wash  the  sponge  only

during  water  changes  and  with  the  water  from  the  tank  and  not  freshwater,if  this  is  the  case  then  does  it  mean  that  I  need  to  do  a  WC  daily  or

will  changing  of  the  sponge  frequently  remove  any  beneficial  bacteria  which  has  colonised  in  old  sponge?

 please  advise
