 Hi,
I  am  planning  to  hook  up  my  lights,  filter  and  co2  to  timers,  now  my  question  is  how  you  guys  are  doing  it?  Do  you  have  separate  timers  for  Lights,  filter  and  CO2  or  do  we  have  any  kind  a  single  timer  which  will  allow  to  switch  on  the  filter  once  the  lights  are  off  and  when  lights  comes  on  ,  it  will  shutdown  the  filter.  Any  ideas  how  I  could  get  this  done

 thanx  &  regards

Your  filter  runs  24/7.  You  need  timer  for  your  light  and  co2.  You  can  run  your  lights  and  co2  with  a  single  timer  but  if  you  have  a  bigger  tank  having  a  separate  timer  for  co2  and  switching  it  On  an  hour  ahead  of  lights  is  a  good  option.

 Thanks  ruchit  for  the  reply
My  problem  is  I  have  a  topfilter  which  I  run  only  in  the  night  after  the  lights  goes  off(  yes  I  know  topfilter   is  a  big  NO  for  planted  tanks)  but  I  am  on  a  tight  budget  right  now  cant  go  for  canister
Yes  I  do  have  a  big  tank(  a  48x18x18  inches)
So  all  that  increases  my  needs  of  multiple  timers  which  I  wanted  to  consolidate  to  1  or  2  timers  max

Whether  it  is  top,  botom,  left  or  right  filter,  it  must  run  24/7.  If  you  are  on  a  tight  budget  then  supplement  this  or  even  better  replace  it  completely  with  an  internal  power  filter  to  get  adequate  flow

Yes  I  do  have  2  power  heads  to  improve  the  flow  and  they  run  24/7  to  supplement  the  filter

I'd  like  to  know  why  do  you  wan't  the  top  filter  to  work  only  during  the  night.  And  you  have  to  power  heads  that  run  24/7  but  not  the  filter.  Please  explain  to  us.

I'd  say  that  you  do  not  absolutely  need  a  filter  if  you  have  a  well  planted  tank.   The  plants  are  your  best  filter.   If  you  wish  to  remove  the  debris  (you  can  do  that  too  with  careful  siphoning  weekly)  and  want  to  have  a  polished  effect  to  the  water  you'll  have  to  invest  a  bit  on  a  inexpensive  canister  filter.   This  will  do  the  work  of  mechanical  &  biological  filtration,  create  enough  water  circulation  if  used  wisely  &  at  the  same  time  diffuse  CO2,  all  at  the  same  time  consuming  much  less  energy  saving  you  in  long  run.  Three  power  heads  (counting  the  one  on  top  filter)  will  consume  more  energy  than  a  canister  filter.

External  filter  will  also  increase  your  flexibility  in  that  you  can  use  a  wide  variety  of  media  as  and  when  required.

 Thank  you  Mortis  and  Mistryde.
The  reason  I  run  the  topfilter  in  the  night  is  it  cleans  up  the  waters,  but  more  than  that  it  aids  in  oxygenation  in  the  night.  Correct  me  if  I  am  wrong.
Yes  I  agree  with  need  of  canister  filter  but  it  has  to  wait  for  sometimes  in  my  case

An  airpump  would  be  enough  for  oxygenation

If  you  have  media  in  the  filter  and  you  stop  the  flow  for  12  hours  there  wont  be  any  biological  filtration  which  is  OK  if  you  are  only  looking  at  polishing  the  water.

Look  at  the  5  pin  timer  from  frontier.  Single  timer  will  allow  you  to  toggle  the  filter  and  co2/lights.

 Regards,
 Venkat

If  you're  looking  for  oxygenation  at  night,  an  aerator  will  do  the  job  perfectly  fine  at  much  lower  consumption.  As  for  the  other  part,  filtration  just  during  the  night  will  not  be  much  effective  because  :
 1.   There  will  be  no  bio-filtration  since  the  filter  will  be  running  only  for  10-12  hrs  or  so.
 2.   This  much  time  will  not  be  sufficient  to  clear  all  the  debris  in  tank  effectively  (unless  the  flow  is  extremely  high)  and  you'll  have  a  build  up  over  a  period  of  time.

You  can  use  a  5  pin  timer  as  suggested  as  Mortis.   It'll  run  your  Co2  &  aerator  alternatively.   Better  have  a  different  timer  for  the  lights.   Because  it  is  recommended  that  you  turn  on  the  Co2  an  hr  before  the  lights  come  on  &  go  off  an  hr  before  they  go  out.

Thank  you  venkat  and  Deepak  for  the  suggestions  and  I  will  try  to  follow  it  up.
So  I  must  have  gone  for  the  5  pin  timer  as  you  guys  suggested  but  I  think  I  already  own  a  4  pin  timer,  I  will  go  for  another  4  pin  timer  as  well

 Many  thanks  guys
 cheers

You  can  use  the  4  pin  timer  for  the  lights  &  get  one  5  pin  timer  for  the  CO2  &  aerator.
