You expected some magic potion that ll cool your tank off? well no, nothing of that sort at all.
Here is what the thing is,

You dint get it from picture, did you? even though they are suppose to speak a thousand.
Well, here is how it works.
1. You switch on your cooling fan(not part of this DIY)
2. You are losing water in form of vapour. (you are worried if it will evaporate the whole tank?)
3. Well this is the solution for your 2nd issue, cool down with your fans tension free, upto 1.5liter per day!!!
Once the water in your tank evaporates------------------------->
The level in your tank falls down--------------------------------->
Once the level falls down, the water from bottle comes out---->
Your level is back at max, so no drop of water level at all!!
What this means?
You dont need that "gizmo-zonic" water top-off pumps, or that extra pumping sump box. Or not at all being worried about the water pump failing or overflowing your tank, because this principle is fully mechanical- ZERO electronic. What more it is the same principle of your water dispenser, so nearly no failure at all.
And here is how you can build one

The stuff you need
1. One 1 liter mineral water bottle( you can go for a 1.5l bottle if you have a stronger clamp to stay on glass.

2. A wide cap that is big enough to sit on th glass edge. Preferably you can use strong ones that come for Maltova, Bournvita, Milo, Horlicks, etc etc.

WP_001124 by c2988208ae1b199f126a0034a11540f0, on Flickr
3. A hack-saw blade.
4. A metal threaded GI pipe, that has as big dia as your bottle. And a plier to hold this when you put it on stove.
WP_001121 by c2988208ae1b199f126a0034a11540f0, on Flickr
Procedure-
-Place the (green)cap on the edge and mark the positions to be cut for the groove.
-Cut the groove in the cap over the market point, which is about the thickness of your glass. Slit through with saw blade.

WP_001130 by c2988208ae1b199f126a0034a11540f0, on Flickr
-Heat the GI pipe holding with the pliers, over a stove. Once hot, pierce it through the green cap.
You ll get a nice hole and you can file up more as per your bottles neck
WP_001129 by c2988208ae1b199f126a0034a11540f0, on Flickr
-Powerfully twist the bottle on to the green cap.
-Place it over the tank, and check your desired level, and increase or decrease the hole dia, to maintain that level.
You can see the bottles mouth, so that is the water level it will maintain.
WP_001133 by c2988208ae1b199f126a0034a11540f0, on Flickr
-Optionally you can us an extension pipe for setting an easy level.
Installation-
-Simply fill the bottle under the tap.(without removing the green cap)
-Gently turn the bottle upside down over the edge and fit the green cap with grooves on the edge.
- Hint!!- remember you dint see the (blue)cap in any of the pics, well preserve it. You can close the bottle with its cap- then- tilt it- then when bottle mouth touches the water-- open the cap.........tada!!!!! you are done.
Happy cooling and happy summers... and dont forget to refill them often

What is the bottom green cap from? I have been toying with this idea for quite a while now, mainly to avoid the unsightly inch high scaling due to evaporation. But I am facing two problems with the bottles I tried. 1. Getting a clean enough cut to keep the bottom air tight (I used another bottle for base). 2. Keeping the top bottle from toppling over. Perhaps using the right base will allow me to finally get a working version. :-) |
