I  have  recently  added  a  ISTA  MAXMIX  CO2  reactor  inline  at  the  outlet  of  my  Ehein  canister  filter.  Diffusion  is  pretty  good.

But  flow  rate  has  reduced  considerably,  which  can  be  solved  using  an  additional  powerhead.

Does  this  mean  that  the  efficiency  of  my  filter  has  also  reduced  in  terms  of  water  intake  and  exhaust?

Sorry  if  I  am  being  lame  but  most  people  are  saying  that  filter  performance  will  not  be  reduced  though  I  feel  the  other  way.

 Just  my  2  cents:

As  long  as  the  reactor  is  connected  externally  to  the  canister,  I  dont  think  there  should  be  any  issue  with  the  filter.  However,  if  you  are  able  to  see  the  flow  rate  go  down,  you  can  always  make  it  up  with  an  additional  power  head,  to  compensate  that  and  maintain  good  water  circulation.

Thanks  rkkaran  for  your  comments..  but  I  was  going  by  the  logic  that  if  less  volume  of  water  per  second  is  expelled  then  less  water  will  be  drawn  per  second..reducing  overall  turnover  and  filtration..  Please  clarify  this  part.

Np.  I  guess  you  might  have  a  valid  point  there.  I  just  read  here  http://www.fishlore.com/fishforum/filters-filtration/74049-eheim-classic-canister-filters-guide-setup-maintanence-tips-tricks.html,  under  FLow  control,  thst  the  motor(here  Eheim),  would  get  heated  up  if  there  is   flow  restriction.

I  would  still  like  to  hear  from  the  experts,  who  would  have   more  practical  suggestion  Wink

 HI,

Whenever  you  add  a  reactor  it  will  reduce  about  10-15%  of  your  flow  rate  this  is  very  normal,  make  sure  your  reactor  is  bubble  free  i.e.,  it  should  have  water  filled  full  in  reactor  if  it  has  filled  half  then  your  flow  will  reduce  more.

@rkkaran  ..  that  is  exactly  what  I  am  fretting  over.  I  don't  want  to  damage  my  expensive  Eheim  filter  due  to  overheating.  I  am  also  worried  that  lower  flow  rate  can  also  affect  my  biological  filtration  in  the  filter.

@Andrew..  I  did  notice  a  reduction  in  flow.  Luckily  my  reactor  is  completely  bubble  free  and  both  the  impellers  are  running  all  the  time..However  I  am  really  concerned  about  the  overheating  of  the  motor  thingy.  Otherwise  I  just  love  the  reactor.  Good  CO2  dissolution  though  I  do  get  few  micro  bubbles.  But  its  far  better  than  any  ceramic  diffuser  any  day.  Earlier  with  ceramic  diffuser  my  entire  tank  used  to  get  filled  with  millions  of  tiny  micro  bubbles  which  to  me  was  a  eye  sore.

I  am  thinking  about  running  a  powerhead  over  a  ceramic  diffuser.  Many  insist  that  it  provides  far  better  dissolution  of  CO2.

No  chance  of  overheating  I'm  using  the  same  ista  reactor  for  4  months  in  my  ehiem  2215  canister  never  had  any  issue,  even  i  reduced  to  10mm  hose  to  connect  to  my  lily  pipe,  the  output  flow  from  canister  will  remain  same  only  but  i  never  went  below  10mm  for  2215.  according  to  the  hose  size  your  flow  power  will  change  thats  it  but  output  flow  from  canister  will  remain  same,  but  you  shouldn't  restrict  the  flow  rate  through  shut  off  valve  that  will  cause  overheating  sometime.  I  have  used  boyu  1400/ltr  impeller  in  my  2215  for  increasing  the  output  flow  from  600  to  900ltr/hr  and  it  ran  for  3  months   Chuckle   till  i  got  sunsun  304  canister  filter.

Wow!!!  Thats  a  lot  of  diy  it  seems..  Anyways  thanks  a  lot  for  clearing  it  up..  The  reactor  is  really  good  and  I  don't  want  to  ditch  it.
