 Dear  IAH  Members
Don't  you  think  that  some  Aquarium  fishes  are  over  priced?  From  Snake  Skin  Discuss,  right  up  to  Frontosa  at  several  thousand   each  or  50,000  for   a  certified  arowana.  Is  it  worth  paying  this  much  for  a  fish?Share  your  views.

 Best  Regards
 Kaushik

I  would  never  ever  keep  discus...so  I'm  not  the  one  to  speak...but  yes...they  are  madly  overpriced...and  way  overhyped...

 especially  those  Asian  Arowana's...

 Hi  ,

Price  of  a  fish  is  different  from  the  same  being  overpriced.

Prices  can  vary  on  the  following  basis

 1.  Source:  Person  selling/  sorucing  you  the  fish
 2.  Stock  of  the  species  in  the  market
 3.  Desparation  of  the  hobbyist
 4.  Endangered  species
 5.  Difficulty  in  sourcing

No  can  really  say  you  if  the  fish  is  over  priced  or  not.  Guess  it  depends  on  your  pocket!

 Regards,
 Surya

Just  to  add  to  Surya's  view,  I  guess  it  also  depends  on  how  easy/difficult  it  is  to  breed  the  particular  species

 -  Complexity  of  setup  required  to  breed
 -  Time  taken  for  the  fish  to  be  mature  for  breeding
 -  No.  of  fries  produced  per  breeding  cycle

 Cheers,
 Jai

'Expensive'  is  a  term  relative  to  an  individual.  Something  which  could  be  termied  expensive  for  you  and  I,  would  probably  be  a  pitttance  to  a  someone  else.

 Exclusiveness  is  another  issue.
I  would  quite  happily  shell  out  the  cash  for  a  Chilli  Red  Arowana  (if  I  had  that  much),  but  then  will  not  buy  guppies  being  sold  at  Rs  20/-  more  than  what  I  have  in  mind.

Surya's  points  pretty  much  cover  all  bases.

Well  said  surya  and  pris  .I  am  also  not  in  discus  so  cant  say  anything  about  them. But  regarding  aro  i  dont  think  arowanas  are  overpriced. The  breeders  have  to  wait  5+  years  to  breed  them.Better  its  costly  because  look  at  the  current  thing  happenin  to  silver  aros.Seen  ppl  keeping  it  in  2ft  tanks  for  lifetime.I  cant  bear  the  plight  of  these  beauties.IMO  if  u  dont  take  care  of  fish  dont  buy  it.And  just  buying  is  not  the  cost  involved  the  maintainence  cost  much  more  than  buying.     And  1thing  for  sur  aros  are  not  overpriced  but  our  pockets  are  smallsized.  Very Happy

I  agree  with  Pradeep  and  Surya,  cost  is  such  a  relative  issue  based  on  how  deep  your  pockets  are.
So....if  it  makes  you  happy  and  you  can  justify  spending  the  money  (whether  you  can  afford  it  or  not)..then  I  suppose  its  worth  it.

In  addition  to  factors  mentioned  here,  most  important  is  demand  &  supply  that  drives  the  cost.

It's  we  who  decides  the  price,  the  customers,  who  always  want  the  rare  /  fancy  stuff.  The  LFS  or  the  seller  leverages  on  this  aspect,  most  of  the  time.

We  have  all  witnessed  such  instances  here  on  IAH  itself.

I  would'nt   mind  spending  a  couple  of  thousands  on  a  fish...

It  depends  on  what  i  really  want..
As  of  now  i  really  want  some  bichirs..So  i  don't  mind  spending  a  couple  of  hundreds  to  a  thousand  for  one...

As  for  Asian  Aros..  Id  rather  buy  a  xback  and/or  a  blood  red..  than  spending  it  on  a  planted  tank...  I  also  would'nt  mind  spending  some  cash  on  Leo's  and  Black  Diamonds...

 Dear  Everyone
Now-a-days,Kampha  Flowerhorn,  Red  Arowana  fishes  are  costlier  then  jewellery.  However,  people  prefer  to  buy  them  both  for  hobby  and  to  keep  their  house  and  life,  pious  and  vibrant.  In  my  opinion  it  all  depends  upon  the  disposable  amount  one  spend  for  them  and  I  mean  it.
 Regards
 Kaushik
