 depends  on  the  Apisto...
A  good  starter  would  be  a  10  gallon  with  a  pair/trio  of  your  fav.  spp.  a  substrate  of  fine  sand,  a  small  upturned  flowerpot/coconut  shell  and  some  java  moss.  u  could  also  add  some  leaves(e.g.  T.catappa)  to  the  floor  of  the  tank.(This  setup  is  if  u  want  to  raise  large  nos  of  fry).

Another  setup  would  be  a  15-20  gallon  with  lots  of  surface  area,  a  trio  of    apistos,  a  trio  of  killies,  and  a  shoal  of  small  tetras..neons,  cardinals.  furnishing  same,  just  add  some  mops  for  killie  eggs.

An  awesome  setup  would  be  a  48x18x15  with  sand  substrate,  covered  in  several  layers  of  leaves,  bogwood/pots  to  form  territories,  and  4-5  trios  of  apistos  and  a  large  shoal  of  tetras/pencil  fishes/rasboras.  maybe  a  twig  catfish  or  three.

If  u  r  to  keep  killies  with  apistos  go  with  surface  dwelling  types  like  Aplocheilus,  Epiplatys,  Aphyosemion  etc.
With  bottom  spawning  killies,  there  is  the  risk  that  the  males  may  consider  apistos  as  rivals.

I  have  of  late  bred  apostogamma  borelli  i  just  talk  about  the  set  up  used  to  breed  them.
I  put  a  pair  in  a  18X9X9  tank  and  placed  a  small  mud  pot.  I  also  did  place  a  few  almond  leaves  in  them  as  they  like  acidid  water  in  a  weeks  time  i  had  fry.  The  female  assumed  charge  of  taking  care  of  the  fry  wheras  the  male  was  driven  away.  So  i  promtly  took  out  the  males  and  even  now  which  is  almost  a  week  since  the  fry  have  been  born  the  female  is  tending  to  the  free  swimming  fry
