 Continued.....

Again  the  same  impatient  refreshing  of  the  group  mails,  to  check  whether  the  post  has  been  published.  Again  the  same  nail  biting  suspense  Sad

Just  then  the  Computer  of  the  said  person  goes  "PING".  He  has  a  new  mail  in  his  in-box.  And  you  guessed  it,  it  was  from  the  Admin.  It  read.....

 Dear  Mr  Person,

This  is  the  limit.  What  rubbish.  I  do  not  care  if  you  do  not  respect  yourself,  which  is  very  evident  in  the  way  you  addressed  yourself  as  small  case  "i"  instead  of  capital  "I".  But  I  do  demand  that  when  you  address  me  you  use  Capital  letter  to  begin  my  name.  Do  you  think  I  have  no  other  work  than  to  correct  your  posts  and  teach  you  proper  English?  This  is  your  last  chance.  Now  send  me  a  proper  post  or  else  I  am  going  to  lock  your  user  ID  forever.

 Regards,
 Admin.

@#$%$#@  was  the  first  reaction  of  the  said  person!   Was  he  here  to  learn  fishkeeping  or  be  thought  proper  English?  He  was  seething  with  rage.  Every  fibre  of  his  body  told  him  to  let  go!  To  hell  with  it!

 yet........

 To  be  continued...

 Regards,

 Continued...

yet.....  there  was  a  queer*  hesitancy  in  the  said  person's  desire  to  quit.  He  slowly  began  to  mull  it  over.  Point  by  point...

 1)  There  was  nothing  wrong  in  what  the  Admin  had  said  (Though  he  could  have  been  a  bit  gentle  about  it).
 2)  The  person  had  been  indeed  sloppy  with  his  post.  He  could  have  been  more  careful.
 3)  The  person  needed  to  be  guided  by  the  Admin,  With  his  vast  knowledge  in  Fishes  and  aquatic  plants.  The  Admin  did  not  need  the  person  nor  was  he  going  to  gain  anything  by  guiding  the  person.
 4)  The  Admin  was  a  kind  big  hearted  hobbyist  who  had  gifted  the  person  with  Synodontis  eupterus,  when  he  was  in  search  of  the  featherfin  catfish.  That  too  as  a  gift!

So  the  third  mail  was  sent  to  the  Admin.....

 Dear  Mr.  Kumar,

I  am  pleased  to  join  your  esteemed  group.  I  am  looking  forward  to  your  guidance  in  fishkeeping.
 Thanking  you,

 Regards,
 Person.

This  time  the  said  person's  heart  was  not  in  it.  He  had  been  rejected  harshly,  I  may  add,  once  too  often  to  show  the  same  eagerness  or  anticipation.
In  fact  the  onus  had  shifted  from  the  Aquarist  group  mail  box,  to  the  Person's  Hotmail  inbox.  He  was  refreshing  it  again  and  again,  in  dread,  fully  anticipating  another  rejection  again.  When.....

A  new  post  in  the  Aquarist  group  mail.  Hallelujah!  The  Person's  post  had  been  published.  All  was  well  with  the  world  once  again.  He  had  been  accepted.
just  then  the  computer  went  "Ping"  again.  Now  what?  Another  post  from  the  Admin.  It  read.....

 Dear  Nayakmaam,

So  it  does  appear  you  can  write  in  proper  English.  Do  you  realize  why  I  did  not  publish  your  atrocious  post  earlier?  I  know  you.  But  the  group  does  not,  nor  is  there  many  chance  that  you  will  meet  them  personally.  The  first  impression  of  you  that  they  will  get  is  from  your  post.  And  what  sort  of  impression  would  that  be?  Others  would  never  get  the  chance  that  I  have  given  you.  They  would  have  been  rejected  in  their  first  attempt.

Anyway.  Welcome  to  A-s-k  [at]  yahoogroups  [dot]  com  and  enjoy  your  stay  here.

 Regards,
 Raj.

Oops!  Did  I  let  the  cat  out  of  the  bag  just  now?

 Regards,

 To  be  continued......

Yes,  that  was  me  and  the  Admin  was  the  accomplished  aquarist  Mr.  Rajendra  Kumar  of  Ask  [at]  yahoogroups  [dot]  com.

Now  years  down  the  line  when  I  think  about  that  incidence  a  few  things  strike  me.

 1)  Mr.  Raj  cared.  He  cared  enough  about  me,  that  he  was  even  willing  to  antagonize  me  in  the  process  of  correcting  me  and  making  me  a  better  hobbyist.
 2)  Ego,  the  biggest  stumbling  block  in  the  learning  process.  If  that  day  I  had  let  my  anger  overcome  me  I  would  never  have  learnt  all  the  wonderful  things  about  the  hobby  that  he  and  many  other  senior  pioneers  thought  me.  I  would  never  have  become  the  aquarist  I  am  today.

So  Guys,  the  first  Moral  of  the  story......

An  Admin  or  a  moderator  corrects  you  because  he  cares  for  you.  He  can  ignore  your  misdemeanor  or  sloppiness  and  be  chummy  chummy  with  you.  But  that  is  not  his  duty.  It's  not  to  pamper  your  weakness,  but  to  ignite  your  strength  that  he  does  his  duty.  Even  at  the  cost  of  being  branded  as  highhanded.  A  thankless  job,  I  tell  you.  Luckily  not  my  problem  as  I  am  only  a  older  newbie,  never  mind  the  green  color  Chuckle

In  the  process  of  course  there  are  some  troublemakers.  They  jump  on  the  bandwagon  pm'ing  the  member  who  has  been  corrected  and  making  all  sweet  talks  about  the  said  member  having  been  wronged  by  the  admins  or  Mods.  How  the  member  had  been  discriminated  or  bullied  and  blah  blah  blah.

That  is  when  I  remember  that  old  story......
A  little  bird  was  flying  south  for  the  winter.  It  was  so  cold  the  bird  froze  and  fell  to  the  ground  into  a  large  field.  While  he  was  lying  there,  a  cow  came  by  and  dropped  some  dung  on  him.  As  the  frozen  bird  lay  there  in  the  pile  of  cow  dung,  he  began  to  realize  how  warm  he  was.  The  dung  was  actually  thawing  him  out!
He  lay  there  all  warm  and  happy,  and  soon  began  to  sing  for  joy.  A  passing  cat  heard  the  bird  singing  and  came  to  investigate.  Following  the  sound,  the  cat  discovered  the  bird  under  the  pile  of  cow  dung,  promptly  dug  him  out  and  ate  him.

 Moral  of  the  story:
 (1)  Not  everyone  who  shits  on  you  is  your  enemy.
 (2)  Not  everyone  who  gets  you  out  of  shit  is  your  friend.
 (3)  And  when  you're  in  deep  shit,  it's  smart  to  keep  your  mouth  shut!

Well,  I  do  not  know  where  the  third  moral  of  the  aforesaid  story  fits  into  my  monologue.  But  what  the  heck....  Two  out  of  three  is  not  bad  Very Happy

 To  be  continued.....

 Regards,

Nayakere  ............  Very  Nice  Story  Telling.  You  should  seriously  consider  writing  a  book,  It  will  be  a  page  turner   Very Happy

When  i  was  new  to  IAH  ,  I  would  read  my  posts  twice  before  submitting  them,  Later  on  that  phase  went  away,  But  even  today  if  i  find  that  i  made  a  mistake  ..........  it  could  be  a  simple  spelling  mistake  done  while  typing  fast  or  gramatical  error  ,  I  always  edit  my  post  and  then  for  the  next  5  minutes  keep  thinking  that  the  people  who  have  already  seen  that  post  must  think  i  am  an  idiot  !!!

There  are  times  when  i  am  surfing  IAH  on  my  mobile  and  its  a  pain  to  type  long  replies  using  touch  screen,  In  such  cases  i  do  not  even  post  rather  than  post  in  short  form  or  SMS  language.

I  hope  this  thread  is  an  eye  opener  for  some  of  the  folks  and  by  this  i  do  not  mean  to  target  people  who  are  not  fluent  in  the  language,  That  is  understandable  and  we  can  even  make  out  if  this  is  the  case  ..........  This  is  more  to  the  folks  who  can  speak  and  write  the  language  fluently  but  even  then  want  to  butcher  it  !!!

OH  ..........  and  one  more  thing,  Short  Form  ,  SMS  Language  etc  etc  may  be  cool  for  school  or  college  but  in  a  matured  forum  like  IAH  or  any  other  forum  for  that  matter  .........  will  not  get  any  brownie  points  !

Taking  cue  from  the  Admin's  penchant  for  proper  English,I  was  under  the  impression  that  the  person  in  question  was  our  beloved  Trevor  Sir.Well,it  seems  like  he  was  not  the  only  one  out  there.
