Hi,

Its  locally  called  as  Sun  board  here  in  Bangalore.  Its  pretty  easy  to  work  with  this  material.  As  Nidhi  has  mentioned,  you  just  need  a  good  sharp  knife  to  cut  the  sheet.  I  had  earlier  made  a  hood  using  the  sun  board.  You  get  this  material  in  different  thickness:  3  mm,  4,  5,  6,  8  ,12,  15,  19  etc...But  if  you  want  in  color,  then  you  get  only  in  3-4mm  thickness.  Rest  all  comes  in  white  color.

 For  12"  cube

 2.5'  T5  Hood.

But  I  must  say  that  this  material  would  bend  if  exposed  to  more  heat.  It  also  burns  if  heated  more.  Sticking  is  pretty  easy.  You  can  use  fevi  quick  (instant  glue)  to  glue  the  sheet.

Ah,  I  have  my  answer  finally..this  is  the  stuff  I  am  looking  for.  And  nice  hood,  JosyJames!

What  can  I  do  to  make  it  look  less  tacky  and  matt-finish  as  I  would  want  a  more  slick  glossy  finish  on  the  hood(sun  board/foam  board).  do  I  stick  vinyl  sticker  or  something?  any  suggestions?

That's  what  I  have  already  told  you,  it  will  become  brittle  over  a  few  years  because  of  the  moisture  content  in  the  hood,  the  heat  from  the  lights  will  deform  it  a  bit,  and  the  color  will  fade..  I  don't  think  it  will  affect  the  fish  much..  all  the  LFS  are  using  the  same  material.
As  for  gloss  finish  you  can  use  wall  papers  which  comes  with  adhesives,  I  mean  the  real  papers  which  are  meant  to  be  stuck  on  walls..
I  don't  know  where  it  is  available  in  your  area,  but  here  they  have  shops  exclusively  for  them..

I  really  got  scared  by  garothmaan's  diy,  I  am  no  pro  at  diy  but  that  was  extreme  for  me.  Yeah,  foam  board  is  what  I  need.  Thanks  so  much  for  the  idea,Nidhi  Smile

Ya  his  idea  is  realy  good,  it  doesnt  require  industrial  tools  and  lot  of  effort  also.  Plus  its  cheaper.  Do  show  us  how  you  are  doing  it  yourself.  Lets  see  you  skils.  Very Happy

Garothmaan,  I  am  no  pro  like  you  people.  So  I  maybe  even  scrappy  at  this.  So,  don't  expect  me  to  be  all  Amano  about  this  canopy.  Most  probably  I  will  make  it.  And  hopefully  it  wont  look  tacky  and  plastic  like  the  one  I  showed  you  in  the  top  pic.  Thanks  for  the  great  ideas  everyone!

Take  a  walk  on  BVK  Iyengar  road,  and  ask  some  of  the  hardware  stores  for  foam  board  or  sun  board.
prices  may  vary  depending  on  the  thickness  and  color.  5mm  white  board  cost  me  200  bucks  for  a  4x3  foot  sheets,  and  that  was  a  long  time  ago...
