 Refer

IMPO,  for  the  size  of  Aquarium  in  question,  if  the  support  strip  is  less  than  3”  wide  &  12mm  thick,  over  a  period  it  may  buckle  under  pressure  &  develop  cracks  rendering  it  useless.

 HTH.

I  have  never  seen  a  4  1/2  foot  tank  with  12mm  glass  bulging,  it  might  be  either  of  cases,  the  glass  used  might  not  be  a  quality  glass,  secondly  it  can  also  happen  if  the  tank  slightly  tilting  towards  the  front  side  due  to  uneven  stand  or  ground  where  it  is  kept.  First  check  using  a  spirit  level  to  see  where  it  is  tilting,  then  keep  some  thin  sheets  of  thin  plywood  below  the  legs  of  stand  till  you  achieve  proper  level.  then  again  fill  water  to  see  if  it  is  still  bulging,  if  it  is  bulging  again  you  have  to  add  the  supports  definitely.
